NYC Firefighters Fear Colleague Who Routinely Flees Fires, Was a ‘Priority Hire’ Due to ‘Discrimination’

Affirmative action is a horrible idea wherever it’s enacted, but it’s especially dangerous in fields of public service like firefighting and law enforcement. A case in point would be Michael D. Johnson, a firefighter made a priority hire for the New York City Fire Department because of “discrimination”, and who has a habit of putting his fellow firefighters in danger.

Michael D. Johnson won’t fight fires. Instead he stays on the sidelines as his Engine Co. 257 colleagues rush into burning buildings, FDNY insiders told The Post.

Nicknamed “Tragic Johnson” by rank and file, he’s managed to evade the smoke and flames several times since joining the Canarsie, Brooklyn, firehouse last year, sources confirmed.

“To have a guy that you know to be afraid is not going to be there for you when you need him to be — it’s frightening,” said one FDNY source.

There's a qualified, capable, and willing to do the job candidate that didn't get the job due to this affirmative action re-prioritization.

I usually say one individual gets adversely impacted for each affirmative action based activity...the one that didn't get the job/promotion/raise! In this case, fellow workers and civilians depending on him to do his job could be killed due to government intervention in hiring practices.

We can easily see what happened in DC...it screwed the entire country - and got some people killed - but, what difference does it make?!

Been going on for sometime all over the fire service. We used to refer to them as "the door stops" because they'd go as far as the door and stop.

There are jobs for everyone in a fire dept. Did you know some of your local firefighters are scared to go into a fire? The can't even wear a mask in the sunshine. Others dont know how to wear their gear right.I'm not saying affirmative action is right. It is by far not. But their are jobs on the fire ground that need to be done that doesn't include entering a burning building.

Not true. There are jobs on a football team that don't require a helmet and pads and they don't go on the field. If you ride fire apparatus, wear the gear, you better be able to do the job. Otherwise don't gear up and stand on the sidelines.

When you have to act as if incompetent people are competent, expect issues like this.

Many firefighters around here gear up and can't even put a mask on or go into a fire. OSHA regulates reflective on road ways. They can also fight fire from outside the house but don't go in. Half the firefighters in this county can't pass a fit test to be cleared for masking up and going in so they don't even test most of them. 12:57 is clueless.

Are you saying that all firefighters must be able to go into a fire if they get on apparatus? How about the older men who have to wear gear but only pump? They can't leave the engine! Join a fire company. Learn how the real world works in the fire service.
