Ocean City Beach Patrol Conducting Demonstration At State EMS Conference

The Ocean City Beach Patrol (OCBP) has been asked to do a presentation and demonstration at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems’ (MIEMSS) annual EMS conference. The conference, which is being held at the Clarion Hotel, will take place April 30-May 4.

MIEMSS is the agency responsible for overseeing commercial ambulance licenses, establishing medical protocols for the state’s EMTs, Paramedics and First Responders, dispatching medevac helicopters and monitoring hospital statuses around the state. At their 2013 conference, the OCBP conducted a live rescue demonstration in front of the Clarion.

During the 2013 demonstration, a carefully planned rescue scenario was set up involving the Beach Patrol, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police, United States Coast Guard, Maryland State Police Aviation Division and the Ocean City Fire Department. Participants from the EMS conference, as well as spectators on the beach, were able to watch the rescue demonstration. Due to the popularity of the session, the OCBP has been asked to participate again this year.

This year’s session consists of a two-part presentation demonstrating the unique challenges of rescue operations on the beach. For the first time, the demonstration will include a sand collapse rescue detailing spinal injury management technique. Multiple EMS agencies from 2013’s demo will be joining, as well as local public safety organizations. Spectators are welcome to come watch the activities, which will take place at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, on the beach in front of the Clarion.
