Wicomico Names Teacher Of The Year Winner

SALISBURY — Lauren Monroe, a prekindergarten teacher at the Wicomico Early Learning Center (WELC) who dedicates herself to creating a successful start in school and life for her 4- and 5-year-old students, was honored as the 2014-2015 Wicomico Teacher of the Year at last week’s annual Wicomico Teacher of the Year Banquet at the Commons at Salisbury University.

Monroe’s nominator wrote that, “I have never seen a teacher be successful in leading young children [4-year-olds] in intensive inquiry projects until I met Lauren. She has taught her children independence and instilled confidence so they are safe to take risks and make mistakes as they learn. Her children are writing and they create their own artwork. Lauren instills in them a sense of ownership and power which frees them to achieve their full potential.”

The new Teacher of the Year began her year in style, arriving at the Wicomico Early Learning Center at 9:30 a.m. Friday chauffeured in a classic 1949 Buick provided for the occasion by Wicomico music teacher and auto enthusiast Buck Burton. She will be featured, along with this year’s three finalists and 21 semifinalists, in a “Working Together for Children” Teacher of the Year special airing soon on PAC 14.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else find it odd that of all the Teachers in Wicomico County, a Pre-K teacher gets Teacher of the Year Award? Pre-K, that is not even mandatory for all our children to attend! Nothing against the lady that won, Congratulations! If she is that good hopefully we will get to see her in the classrooms that our kids have to take.

Anyone know the line item on how much this "teacher of the year" costs? Where are the funds pulled from for the time spent evaluating prospects and printing materials and other things that go with this?

Was a Gift Card awarded to the winner? Is a lunch provided? It is a shame we have to look at this but with all the other wasteful spending going on some things NEED to be cut.

Or is this for the children as well?

She obviously thinks she's hot stuff, being "chauffeured in a classic 1949 Buick" the day of the event.

Once again I'm amazed at the negativity in the comments here. Although I don't know why I'm still surprised as it seems to be the norm here...nonetheless..

Congratulations Lauren! You are a WONDERFUL teacher who does wonderful things and you are so deserving of this award!

My wife is a former Teacher of the Year. Every gift they receive is donated from local businesses- I believe the banquet is partially funded through donations and the $25 per ticket to attend.

I'm as fiscally conservative as they come. I'm all for Teacher of the Year awards though. It gives the teachers something to strive for-an incentive to put their all into their jobs.
Congratulations and Best Wishes to Teacher Lauren Monroe!

If I spent every day with a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds I'd jump out of a window. She deserves any and all accolades she gets.
