A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a car on Route 50 in West Ocean City near Hooper's Restaurant.
The victim, a 16 year old male, may have been attempting to cross the heavily traveled roadway when he was hit. Ocean City paramedics were on the scene within minutes and a State Police medivac helicopter summoned, but the victim expired at the scene before transport could be attempted.
Route 50 traffic is fully blocked in both directions, and will be until until police investigation is completed. Eastbound traffic lanes are backed up for miles. Police advise motorists to use Route 90, but warn that traffic will be heavy and that waits may be long. Traffic in Ocean City is said to be particularly dense tonight due to several special events, including the classic car weekend.
More details as they are available.

Very sad.
I feel sorry for this family. My thoughts are with them. This happens often in Ocean City. I don't know if he was on a crosswalk or not but I have personally seen 2 people hit by cars in OC that weren't at crosswalks and were just cutting across traffic lanes. It also happens quite often near SU.
left west OC (Hooper's) at 11:30pm, rt 50 still closed. traffic backup not as bad. police everywhere- even searching bushes in median w/ flashlights.
AND so the season begins
joe it must have just happened because traffic started to back up at about 8:00 its a shame that a good event has stuff like this happen.
Letter to the Editor:
"I have been on vacation in sunny Florida but for safety reasons I had to keep it secret, but I am back now and looking forward
to getting back in the groove."
How can a fat man living on disability and and subsidized housing afford to take a vacation to Florida? Who paid for the vacation?
Has he ruffled that many feathers with his attacks that he has to worry about his "safetty?" Maybe he was running from the bill collectors.
Am I wrong or should this person also be charged with vehicular manslaughter?
9:04 AM:
It depends on the circumstances. If the kid was crossing not in the crosswalk and when traffic was moving, then the driver can't be held responsible.
If the kid was in the crosswalk and the light in his favor, possibly.
Yes you are wrong. What makes you think it's the vehicle's fault?
9:04, hey moron, how about letting the facts come out first. Just because a vehicle hits a pedestrian does not mean that the vehicle was at fault. Already you want to hang the driver. you tree huggers are all alike.
being that he failed the sobriety test that was giving to him. i agree vehicular manslauter.
Why should anyone be charged? The stupid 16 year old was trying to jay walk across a very very busy road. It's his own fault, and it cost him his life!
And the principal of the high school felt it was his job to ID the victim??????
The DT stated that the MSP refused to give out the victim's identity, but the high school principal thought it was ok???? WTF?????
What high school principal are you talking about? Just curious.
