Senator Ben Cardin

Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States. I appreciate your input on this important issue.

I take seriously the Senate’s Constitutional responsibility to provide advice and consent on Presidential judicial nominations. Every decision should be accompanied by a thorough consideration of the nominee’s qualifications, record, and history. Based on what I have seen and unfortunately still have been prevented from seeing on Judge Kavanaugh, I decided to oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court.

I joined many of my colleagues in asking that the confirmation hearings be postponed until the Senate could have adequate time to review all the crucial pieces of Judge Kavanaugh’s record, as is the norm for all other Supreme Court nominees. Unfortunately, we were not given all the information, nor the adequate time necessary for such an important decision.

Our Constitution created the Supreme Court as an independent check and balance against both the executive and legislative branches of government. It has always been my intention to maintain this critical independence and ensure that the highest court in our nation is able to work in the best interests of the Constitution and the American people. This nomination is certain to leave behind an impact on our society that will be felt for decades. I was concerned as to whether Judge Kavanaugh would be an independent voice on the Supreme Court defending individual Constitutional rights against special interests.

Thank you again for contacting me and sharing your concerns regarding the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Hearing from constituents such as you helps me understand the issues that affect Marylanders.

Judge Maciarello Clears The Air On Daily Times Mistake

Matt Maciarello

Good evening friends. Today the Daily Times published a story about President Trump and Attorney General Brian Frosh. In the story the paper used my picture which was placed next to a large print, anti-Trump quote from former Attorney General Doug Gansler. As I have received numerous calls and texts about the confusion this caused, I am hoping my friends will spread the word that I did not make any such comment about President Trump and would never comment publicly about individuals running for office or those holding office. (To do so would be a breach of judicial ethics and protocol.) The Daily Times has apologized for their error and the confusion this caused and I accept it—mistakes happen and to err is human!

Publishers Notes: Don't sweat it Matt, barely anyone gets that paper any more.

At 1.14pm on October 2, Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi walked into theSaudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul and off the face of this Earth. He vanished as if he had never existed. But the fallout from his disappearance grows by the day.

It is now widely believed that Mr Khashoggi was killed in the building by members of a 15-strong Saudi regime hit squad that had flown into the city earlier the same day.

On Monday, police and prosecutors inspected the consulate building in Istanbul for more than eight hours.

Now Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said they found fresh paint in the building where Mr Khashoggi vanished.

Khashoggi Murder Suspect Dies In "Suspicious Car Accident"

A 31-year-old lieutenant in the Saudi Royal Air Force said to have participated in the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi died in a "suspicious car accident" in Riyadh, according to Turkish media.

Mashal Saad al-Bostani was reportedly on a 15-man hit squad dispatched to Saudi Arabia's Istanbul Consulate in Turkey on October 2 during Khashoggi's visit, before the team quickly left the country, according to daily Yeni Åžafak.

Albostani entered Turkey at 1:45 a.m. local time (2245GMT). He stayed at the Wyndham Grand Hotel and left the country at 9:46 p.m. local time (1846GMT) on a private jet which belonged to the Sky Prime Aviation company. -Yeni Åžafak

Bostani's alleged role in the murder of the Saudi journalist are unclear, as are details of the traffic accident in Riyadh - prompting accusations of a cover up by those who orchestrated the Khashoggi hit. Meanwhile, a columnist for Turkey's Daily Hürriyet wrote on Thursday that Mohammad al Otaibi, Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consul-general, would be "the next execution."

Turkish daily Yeni Åžafak reported Oct. 17 that Al-Otaibi’s voice could be heard in one of the recordings, which Turkish authorities are believed to have, of Khashoggi’s “interrogation” at the consulate.

According to the report, after Al-Otaibi told the interrogators to “do it somewhere else outside or I will be in trouble,” he was told to “shut up if you want to live when you are back in Saudi Arabia.”

Al-Otaibi returned to Saudi Arabia on Oct. 16 before his residence in Istanbul was searched by police for more than eight hours on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. -Daily Hürriyet

K-12: Why So Little for the Mind?

Many critics say our public schools are a train wreck. In Charlotte Iserbyt's memorable phrase, we are all victims of "the deliberate dumbing down of America." Is there any escape? Perhaps, but only if we're candid about what has been done to us throughout the past century.

Here's how bad things are now. Camille Paglia, popular professor and author, declares: "What has happened is these young people now getting to college have no sense of history – of any kind! No sense of history. No world geography. No sense of the violence and the barbarities of history. So, they think that the whole world has always been like this, a kind of nice, comfortable world where you can go to the store and get orange juice and milk, and you can turn on the water and the hot water comes out. ... They know nothing!"

Professor Patrick Deneen at Notre Dame says, "My students are know-nothings. ... Their brains are largely empty. ... They are the culmination of western civilization, a civilization that has forgotten nearly everything about itself, and as a result, has achieved near-perfect indifference to its own culture."

Here's How Much Red Tape Trump Has Cut

The Trump administration on Wednesday reported $23 billion in savings from 176 deregulatory actions in fiscal year 2018. Even more consequential, the administration has issued 65 percent fewer “significant” rules—those with costs that exceed $100 million a year—than the Obama administration, and 51 percent fewer than the Bush administration, after 22 months in office.

The regulatory accounting coincides with the release of the Unified Agenda of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions, which outlines the rulemaking plans for federal agencies in the coming fiscal year.

In her introduction to the new agenda, Neomi Rao, administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, said, “[I]n modern times, the expansion of the administrative state has placed undue burdens on the public, impeding economic growth, technological innovation, and consumer choice. … Our reform efforts emphasize the rule of law, respect for the Constitution’s separation of powers, and the limits of agency authority.”

Federal Judge "Shocked" To Find Obama State Dept Lied To Protect Hillary From Email Server Lawsuits

The noose appears to be tightening further around the law-less behaviors of the Obama administration in their frantic efforts to protect former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from lawsuits seeking information about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server and her handling of the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

As Fox News reports, the transparency group Judicial Watch initially sued the State Department in 2014, seeking information about the response to the Benghazi attack after the government didn't respond to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Other parallel lawsuits by Judicial Watch are probing issues like Clinton's server, whose existence was revealed during the course of the litigation.

The State Department had immediately moved to dismiss Judicial Watch's first lawsuit, but U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth (who was appointed to the bench by President Ronald Reagan) denied the request to dismiss the lawsuit at the time, and on Friday, he said he was happy he did, charging that State Department officials had intentionally misled him because other key documents, including those on Clinton's email server, had not in fact been produced.

Ex-Virginia teacher to plead guilty in nude photo hacking scheme

A former Virginia high school teacher will plead guilty in a hacking scheme that allowed him to obtain nude photographs and other private information from more than 200 people.

Investigators say Christopher Brannan unlawfully accessed the internet history and email accounts of celebrities, students, fellow teachers and his own sister-in-law while he was working at Lee-Davis High School in Richmond from August 2013 to June 2015.

Brannan was fired after FBI investigators alerted school officials of the alleged hacking scheme.

Court documents indicate Brannan has agreed to plead guilty to charges of aggravated identity theft and unauthorized access to a protected computer at a hearing Monday.

Employer of Veterans Wins Fight With Union Over Worker Rights

MADISON, Wisconsin—A small businessman who employs fellow veterans fought back against big labor and won.

Scott Flaugher’s win in court eventually could be a victory for the freedom of workers and the right to work movement nationwide.

Flaugher, owner of Colgate-based Veterans Electric, in large part prevailed in a lawsuit against the electrical contractor brought by administrators of various trust funds for union employees of his company.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District in Milwaukee, was part of a union harassment and intimidation campaign against Veterans Electric and its nonunion employees, Flaugher says.
