Texas landowners along the Mexican border received letters from Washington recently notifying them of the government’s intent to buy their land to build the border wall. Acquiring the real estate could be the biggest step for President Donald Trump to overcome in his effort to secure the border.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) sent letters to Texas border landowners notifying them as to the government’s intent to purchase the land needed for construction of the border wall promised by President Trump and previously authorized by Congress. One family received a letter offering $2,900 for 1.2 of their 16-acre property, the Texas Observer reported.
The Flores family has owned the acreage, located near Los Ebanos in Hidalgo County, for at least five generations, Yvette Salinas told the Observer. Her mother, Maria Flores, received a letter from the DOJ in January offering the compensation via a 21-page “Declaration of Taking,” the first step in an eminent domain condemnation process.
Salinas said this is the second time her family has received the $2,900 offer. The first notice came in 2008 following the passage of the Secure Fence Act of 2006. Following President Barrack’s election in 2008, the Justice Department backed away from the process as the administration took a different stance on building the wall.

Rape focuses critical attention on 'sanctuary' states
The rape of a 14-year-old girl last week in a boys’ bathroom of a Maryland high school, for which two immigrants have been charged, has fueled opposition to officials making the state a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.
One suspect in last Thursday’s attack is 17; the other is 18. Both were enrolled as freshman because of their weak English language skills. The two suspects, who were enrolled in Rockville’s Montgomery High School, are from Central America.
Four days after the rape, Maryland’s House of Delegates passed legislation to join states like California in becoming a “sanctuary state,” affording illegal criminal aliens additional protections and making it more difficult to deport them or ask about immigration status.
That action has infuriated Maryland officials.

Reporter Goes Where Liberal Media Won’t, Asks Spicer About MD Rape by Illegal Immigrant
Tuesday’s White House press briefing featured a question from WTTG Fox 5’s Ronica Cleary that went against the liberal media’s narratives of the day, asking press secretary Sean Spicer about the alleged brutal rape of a high school student outside Washington D.C. by an illegal immigrant.

Cinco de Mayo – More Like Cinco de Cancelled
The great refrain of the left, the establishment right, and anyone who does not understand human nature and dynamism, has been: “What are you going to do – deport all 11 million illegals?”
Yes we’ve heard it for years. Funny how the 11 million number never changes. But anyway.
The question they all ask is set up to be rhetorical – like it‘s not really a question. To the small minds on the left and the defeatists of the right, it is rhetorical. Of course we won’t and/or can’t round them all up. Therefore the only other choice is to let them all stay.
It, as the smart people say, is a binary choice. There is no other option. And then along comes president Trump.
Now I don’t know if Trump is student of history or not, but what he is doing, or rather authorizing, is beginning to already pay dividends. Many news outlets on both sides of the political spectrum are reporting illegals getting the message that the new sheriff will round you up like so much cattle and run you back across the border.
Of course this is not the administration’s stated policy, but who cares. The press’s misinformation campaign appears to be working. And if you are a staunch anti-illegal immigration advocate like me, you’re as happy to see this as am I. And it just keeps getting better.

“The organizers of a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Philadelphia have canceled the annual event over fears of an immigration crackdown.”

Comey Hearing Opens More Questions Than It Answers
FBI Director James Comey did a pretty good job Tuesday hemming and hawing before the House Intelligence Committee, but he revealed something near the end of the hearing that raised serious questions about who knew what about federal surveillance during the last days of the Obama administration
The director told South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy that he had no information to confirm President Donald Trump’s accusation that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, but we knew that already.

Who's Afraid of Ivanka Trump?
Wary conservatives would be wise to follow the first daughter’s lead on paid-leave and child-care policies.
Ivanka Trump has been the target of a boycott, scorn from progressive feminists, and ridicule from late-night comedians. Yet many conservatives are also wary, because they see her as threatening to push the Republican party left, especially on issues such as child care and paid family leave.
This is a mistake. Conservatives need to follow Ivanka’s lead and talk more confidently about these issues, which are critically important to many American women and families. This doesn’t mean conservatives should embrace government-growing policies, but that they should focus on supporting White House reforms that help women and are consistent with conservative principles.

Lawmakers are mulling an offer to Republicans that would keep the filibuster intact for the next Supreme Court nominee.
A group of Senate Democrats is beginning to explore trying to extract concessions from Republicans in return for allowing Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch to be confirmed, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The lawmakers worry that Gorsuch could be confirmed whether Democrats try to block him or not — and Democrats would be left with nothing to show for it. That would be a bitter pill after the GOP blocked Merrick Garland for nearly a year.

Suppliers Of Lowe's In The US And Walmart In Brazil Linked To Slave Labor In The Amazon
Products derived from timber extracted by workers living in conditions analogous to slave labor in Brazil are connected to a complex business network linked to the US market -- possibly reaching the shelves of large retailers and being used in renovation of landmarks -- according to a new investigation conducted by Brazilian news outlet Repórter Brasil. After purchasing from suppliers held liable for that crime by the Brazilian government, local traders exported timber to companies likeUSFloors, which supplies the retail chain Lowe's, as well as Timber Holdings, which supplied timber for construction projects at Central Park and Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
The commercial network linking retailers to sawmill companies was identified by a three-month investigation and confirmed by the companies. The wood products were mixed at Brazilian intermediaries, so the investigation was unable to track the exact destination of each piece of wood. However, its findings reveal that large retail and construction groups are sourcing the product from companies whose supply chains are contaminated by the alleged use of criminal practices, with the conditions of workers rescued from sawmill sites aligning with slave labor practices as defined by Brazilian law.

The cases investigated by Repórter Brasil began at sawmill companies based in the state of Pará -- an important hub for the timber industry in the Brazilian Amazon. One of them is Bonardi da Amazônia, a sawmill company that recruited nine people who were rescued from conditions analogous to slave labor exploitation in October 2012. The workers were located by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Bonardi da Amazônia was formally held responsible for the crime.
The investigation found that workers slept in shacks in the forest at night, in makeshift facilities made of logs removed from the forest itself and covered with tarps, 110 kilometers (over 68 miles) from the nearest town. There were no walls to protect them from the dangers of the forest such as snakes, scorpions and even jaguars. They bathed and washed their clothes in a stream shared with local animals; there was no bathroom. The workers had no formal contracts and told investigators they were paid based on their productivity.

Last year, Georgia blocked more than $98 million in state income tax fraud. This year, determined to root out more attempted fraud, Georgia and at least 20 other states are making taxpayers wait longer — sometimes a lot longer — for their refunds.
Colorado and Louisiana, for instance, warn of delays of up to 60 days after filing. In Virginia and West Virginia, the delays can last up to four weeks. Massachusetts says it can take taxpayers four to six weeks to get their refunds, North Carolina says six weeks, and New Mexico warns it could be 12 weeks. Wisconsin says it could take as long as three months. Hawaii is looking at as much as 16 weeks.
The delays, state officials say, give revenue departments time to double-check returns to ensure that they are authentic and not filed by fraudsters using stolen personal information. They also give states time to compare taxpayers’ returns with employers’ filings of wages paid. And there’s a built-in hedge against fraud because thieves tend to file early, while legitimate taxpayers tend to file later.

Trying to lose weight but reluctant to give up that ritual glass of wine?
Well according to Tanya Zuckerbrot, R.D., creator of the F-Factor Diet, you don't have to.
The key, she told Women's Health Magazine, is to count the calories, just like you would with any other snack.
For white, she recommends Chardonnay, Riesling, white Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc, which are all under 85 calories, 2.6 carbs, and just one gram of sugar.
Or if you're in the mood for red, she suggests opting for a Merlot, Pinot Noir or rosé, which have less than three grams of carbs, one gram of sugar, and 88 calories.
But steer clear of sweeter wines like marsala or sherry which have more than 14 grams of carbs, eight grams of sugar and 164 calories, as well as sweet dessert wines.
Still too fattening? Several producers are offering so-called 'skinny wines' with even less calories.

Alleged killer caught 18 years on dodging a subway fare
A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing a rape and murder in New York City almost two decades ago, after the authorities took his DNA when he tried to dodge a subway fare.
Curtis Batchelor, 41, pleaded not guilty in Bronx Supreme Court to charges of first-degree rape and murder relating to the killing of 56-year-old Elsa Grullon in 1999.
Batchelor, who has been arrested 16 times previously, was 24-years-old at the time of the crime, and lived one floor below Grullon on Gerald Ave. near E. 157th St. in Highbridge.
