President Trump is considering a move that would increase the official unemployment rate by a full point, and it's an idea that many liberals would be OK with.
That's because it wouldn't involve any workers losing their jobs. Rather, the new administration is considering switching the calculation the Labor Department uses as the official unemployment rate in place of a broader definition of what constitutes unemployment.
It's not a bad idea, said Heidi Shierholz, until recently the Labor Department's chief economist. Done properly, the change might give a better, more complex portrait of what is going on in the economy, she said. In any event, it wouldn't do any harm. "It would not be that the unemployment rate has actually jumped. We'd just be using a different set of data to calculate it," she said.
The Labor Department releases numbers on national unemployment every month, most recently stating that the official rate was 4.7 percent. Most news stories echoed that figure, but it was actually only one of six calculations the department releases each month, each using a slightly different definition of unemployed. The numbers are collectively known as U-1 through U-6.

The Past Six Presidents Have All Used The Executive Power To Block Certain Classes Of Immigrants
Donald Trump has received much flak from Democrats and Republicans alike for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S through executive authority. However, the past six presidents have all used the executive power to bar different classes of immigrants.
Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 states: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

6 dead after shooting at mosque in Canada
QUEBEC CITY —Six people were killed in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers, the president of the center said Sunday. Authorities reported two arrests in what Quebec's premier and Canada's prime minister called an act of terrorism.
Early reports said five people were killed, but in a news conference early Monday morning, authorities confirmed six deaths with 8 people injured. The extent of their injuries are unknown.
Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre President Mohamed Yangui reported the first number of dead late Sunday in a telephone call from the provincial capital.
Yangui said the shooting happened in the men's section of the mosque. He said five males had died and he worried that some were children. He said he wasn't at the center when the attack occurred, but he got some details from people on the scene.

Newt on the Media: ‘These Aren’t Reporters — These Are Propagandists’
Friday on Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took aim at the media for its extensive coverage of last week’s women’s march on Washington, while largely ignoring the March for Life that occurred earlier in the day.
Gingrich blasted the press, saying they were not reporter, but instead “propagandists.”
Partial transcript as follows:
ERIC BOLLING, FILL-IN HOST OF “THE O’REILLY FACTOR”: Despite the march is big turnout, the mainstream media appearing to do its best to downplay it today, especially compared to the nonstop coverage given to last weekend’s pro-abortion march.
Joining us now to analyze from Arlington, Virginia. Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich. Look at the coverage. You look at the coverage. It’s nonstop, it’s wall-to-wall last week for the pro-abortion march, yet you hardly heard very much about this one even though Vice President Pence made an appearance.

College Lecturer Punched In The Face And Knocked Into Freezing Canal For 'Being White'
A media lecturer at Stratford College was set upon by a group of Muslim males and sent tumbling into a freezing canal while out jogging in Birmingham for, he believes, “being white” on January 15th.
The Stratford Observer reports that Lee Skinner was running along the canal side near Yardley Road, Acocks Green in the middle of the afternoon when one of the five-strong group suddenly struck him full force in the face, knocking him into the icy waters.
The Daily Mirror records how Skinner was “able to identify them as Pakistani as I’ve worked in Muslim communities and have a detailed knowledge of Islam and speak Arabic to a certain level”.
The slightly-built lecturer described how the blow sent him “up into the air and into the water. I sank and was completely submerged, my feet were not touching the bottom.”
Skinner was not knocked completely unconscious and drowned, fortunately, but a police spokesman said he was “prevented from getting out by his assailant”.

Media more interested in hating Trump than reporting news
When it comes to gathering and reporting the news, it is hard to beat the uncommon sense of legendary journalist Peter Kihss. I wrote several months ago that, as a young reporter, I learned from him that there are no such things as stupid questions to politicians, only stupid answers.
Now another Kihss gem applies, this time to the early media coverage of President Trump. More than three decades ago, Kihss and I were talking in the old newsroom of the New York Times when, after a frustrating day of seeing his story mangled by editors, he looked at me and said: Always remember, the job of the editor is to separate the wheat from the chaff — and publish the chaff in the newspaper.
I laughed, he didn’t, but his warning seemed especially prescient after Trump’s first Monday in the Oval Office. The new president delivered tons of wheat while most of the media was obsessed with the chaff.

Politically-correct Grocery Shopping
A tag that says simply "Best" hangs next to a price tag for Dr. McDougall's oatmeal on a shelf at Giant Food. A tag below Diamond sliced almonds reads "Good," while another below a can of Amy's Organic Soups says "Great."
The designations are part of a ratings system the Landover-based grocer is testing in nine of its stores that measures the sustainability of food, both fresh and processed.
Giant's pilot program, developed by Brooklyn, N.Y.-based HowGood, comes as more and more consumers want to know how their food is grown and made, and retailers are looking for ways to give them information in a digestible way. One grocery analyst dubbed 2017 the year of sustainability for groceries as consumers begin to embrace the idea much as many started seeking organic products in recent years.
"Sometimes it can be difficult for consumers to read through the product label and understand exactly what the health benefits are," said Jamie Miller, a spokesman for Giant, the Baltimore area's largest supermarket chain. "This is a continuation of our commitment to make it easier to help customers identify healthier and more sustainable products that we offer."

Five essential lessons for Republicans
How should we behave in the age of Donald Trump? Many politicians, clients, political operatives and staffers have asked me variations of this question over the past month. Being in somewhat uncharted territory, this is a legitimately challenging query.
What should we do when our president says something that we find offensive? What should we say when the press asks us to comment on tweets that we find less than presidential?
You get the picture.
This is, of course, only a problem for Republicans. Most Democrats have settled on a strategy that was on full display at the inaugural parade and the left-wing Women’s March last week – scream and curse as loudly as possible. They seem completely unaware of the fact that their actions are helping the guy they want to hurt, but that’s their problem, let them have at it.
Here are five principles for Republicans and conservatives to consider as we begin to navigate the Age of Trump.

Pence Promises 'Full Evaluation' of Voter Fraud
Vice President Mike Pence promised GOP lawmakers "a full evaluation of voting rules" and the "overall integrity" of voting in the U.S.," The Washington Post reported Friday.
Lawmakers and aides say a House Republican raised the issue with Pence in a private meeting in light of President Donald Trump's announcement that there would be an investigation into voter fraud.
"What I can tell you is that I would anticipate that the administration is going to initiate a full evaluation of voting rules in the country, the overall integrity of our voting system in the wake of this past election," Pence told Republican lawmakers at their Philadelphia policy retreat, the Post says.
"You can anticipate that we will be looking for ways to work with you, to simply dig into it, to follow the facts, to see where the facts go," the Post says he added." That one person, one vote principle is at the very heart of this republic and our democratic institutions, and it must be defended."

Blending Science With Propaganda
On election night, leftist elites were shocked to learn that a large swath of the country doesn’t think like they do. After all, these self-appointed intellectual rulers deem themselves the sole purveyors of sound political reasoning. Turns out political thought isn’t the only thing the Left wants to dictate. No, these folks also think they hold the trademark on Science™.
Consider, for example, President Donald Trump’s putting the kibosh on the social media accounts of certain federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The restrictions came just as Trump moved to approve the Keystone pipeline — a project the climate change propagandists at the EPA have, of course, viewed none too kindly. It’s not without precedent for incoming administrations to ensure the messaging from federal agencies is consistent with White House messaging. Indeed, as John Sexton notes, “The Trump administration does not want progressives in these agencies joining ‘the resistance’ using government social media accounts.”
That’s just what some government employees have done. And they have allies in the press. For example, Reuters reported it this way: “Employees from more than a dozen U.S. government agencies have established a network of unofficial ‘rogue’ Twitter feeds in defiance of what they see as attempts by President Donald Trump to muzzle federal climate change research and other science.” The @RogueNASA account styles itself the arbiter of “science and climate news and facts. REAL NEWS, REAL FACTS.”

Vegetable Oil: As Bad As Sugar for Your Health?
Vegetable oil is a kitchen staple, and a key component of home-cooked meals, salad dressings, and baked goods. But while some types of vegetable oils are healthy choices, others can be as dangerous to our health as sugar, a top nutritionist says.
“We’ve been told that polyunsaturated vegetable oil is good for us, but it’s actually more toxic to our brain than sugar,” Dr. Catherine Shanahan tells Newsmax Health.
In fact, the promotion of vegetable oil – and its substitution for saturated fat – may be behind many common chronic diseases and ailments today, says Shanahan, author of the newly revised book “Deep Nutrition: Why your Genes Need Traditional Food.”
According to her, the natural foods Americans ate a half-century ago were actually better for our bodies than the modern-day meals that have replaced them.
“The amount of polyunsaturated food in our diet exceeds our needs by a factor of 10. We are overdosing on them and completely overwhelming our metabolism. Overdosing on these oils causes chronic pain, colitis, obesity, fatigue, and more. There are journal articles about this. If the press would only pick them up they would be blockbusters.”

US Auto Industry In Crisis Amid "Inventory Bubble"
Despite record U.S. auto sales last year, the number of vehicles on car-dealer lots remains near record highs, and, as J.D.Power analyst Thomas King warned this week, 2016 ended with an inventory "bubble" that will require less production or more incentives to clear.
With near record high inventories of 3.9 million vehicles...
