Americans who have been the victims of crime are more likely to own a gun than those who have not been victims, a Galluppoll released Monday shows.
The polling company found that 33 percent of respondents who had been victims of crime over the past year owned a gun, while 28 percent of those who had not been victimized owned one. The findings represent a statistically significant difference, Gallup said.
The survey asked 11,165 adults about gun ownership and crime. It is part of the annual Gallup Poll Social Series.
Gallup said it could not definitively explain why crime victims are more likely to be armed with the data it collected, even if the answer seems apparent.

SU Police Earns Governor's Crime Prevention Award
SALISBURY, MD---The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services recently honored the Salisbury University Police Department during the 37th annual Governor’s Crime Prevention Awards ceremony in Glen Burnie, MD.
SU Police received the department’s Category A Crime Prevention Award, recognizing its overall outstanding crime prevention program.
“Salisbury University Police believe that knowledge is power when it comes to campus and community safety,” said SU Police Chief Edwin Lashley. “We place a premium on educational programming for our students to help avoid unsafe situations or to be prepared if they occur. I am grateful for the work of all our officers in these areas. The recognition that safety is a top University priority and the support that has followed from the administration provides a solid foundation for our work.”
Agencies selected for the award must participate in programs recommended by the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute. They include personal and commercial security; training, media and public relations activities, an officer and citizen recognition program relating to crime prevention; and support of the “McGruff the Crime Dog” national crime prevention campaign.

Tax Code Compliance Costs Economy $1 Trillion Annually
The complexity of the tax code now costs the economy around $1 trillion per year, according to a report from the Tax Revolution Institute.
Title 26 of the U.S. Code has 74,608 pages and 2.4 million words. The IRS recently added 7.7 million words of tax regulations to help clarify what the code means, as well as 60,000 pages of case law for accounts and tax lawyers.
The report noted that the 32 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica is 44 million words in length, which means that the tax code is nearly one-fourth of its length.

Iran sanctions renewal becomes law without Obama signature
In an unexpected reversal, President Barack Obama declined to sign a renewal of sanctions against Iran but let it become law anyway, in an apparent bid to alleviate Tehran's concerns that the U.S. is backsliding on the nuclear deal.
Although the White House had said that Obama was expected to sign the 10-year-renewal, the midnight deadline came and went Thursday with no approval from the president. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama had decided to let it become law without his signature.
"The administration has, and continues to use, all of the necessary authorities to waive the relevant sanctions" lifted as part of the nuclear deal, Earnest said in a statement.
Under the Constitution, the president has 10 days after Congress passes a bill to sign it, veto it or let it become law with no signature if Congress is still in session. Although lawmakers have returned home for the holidays, Congress technically has not adjourned and is holding "pro-forma" sessions this week.

Iran Vows Nuclear Retaliation for U.S. Breach of Deal
Senior Iranian officials vowed on Wednesday to continue moving forward with nuclear weapons work and other banned activities as retaliation against the United States for breaching last year’s nuclear accord, according to reports in the country’s state-controlled media.
Iranian leaders instructed the country’s atomic energy organization to move forward with sensitive nuclear work, including the construction of nuclear-powered ships and submarines.
Further provocative actions will be announced in the coming days, according to these Iranian leaders, who described the country’s actions as revenge for recent moves by the U.S. Congress to extend sanctions on Iran, a move the Islamic Republic claims is a breach of the nuclear deal.
Iran’s latest moves have not elicited concern from Obama administration officials, who continue to pursue a series of measures meant to decrease international pressure on Tehran and provide it with greater financial resources.

Best Buy Workers Give Wii U To Teen Who Visited Nearly Every Day To Play Video Games
’Tis the season when we’re happy to hear stories of big-hearted folks out thereamong all the Grinches, people who take it upon themselves to make a stranger’s holiday merry and bright. Like the Best Buy employees in New York who bought a Wii U for a teenager who visited almost every day to play Smash Bros. at the store.
In a Dec. 7 video posted by a YouTube user who says that he’s a manager at Best Buy, the workers approach the teen as he’s sitting at his usual spot, in front of the store’s display verison of the console.
“We got you this Wii U so you don’t have to come here every day and play it,” the worker says, holding the box, adding, “No, for real, it’s for you,” as the teen seems dumbfounded that the console is really for him.
“This kid came in every single day to play the display Wii U, the employees in this store saw an opportunity to make a child smile and did just that,” the video’s description reads.

Stein Spent Nearly $1 Million of Recount Funds on Consultants, Staff, Admin Expenses
Recounts stalled in Pa., Mich.; Trump Gained 131 Net Votes in Wisconsin
Green Party nominee Jill Stein spent nearly $1 million of the funds she raised for recount efforts in three battleground states on consultants, staff, and administrative costs.
Stein, who pushed for recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, raised $7.3 million for the efforts and said that “every dollar” went towards costs associated with the recount efforts. The group, which claimed costs associated with the recounts hit $7.4 million, upped their fundraising goal four times since first calling for recounts.
According to a breakdown of expenses contained on the fund’s website, Stein paid nearly $1 million on consultants and staff. The staff payroll tallied $212,500 while consultants pocketed $364,000. Administrative expenses, such as travel costs, ran $353,618. In all, $930,118 was used to pay consultants, staff, and administrative costs.
Filing fees in the three states cost $4,488,939, the group says. Wisconsin filing fees totaled $3,499,689, Pennsylvania fees were $16,000, and Michigan filing fees ran the group $973,250. Legal expenses cost the group $1.6 million.

News Media Blame Christie for Bill That Could Devastate Newspapers
Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey has made no secret of his disdain for the news media, so when legislation that could hurt the state’s newspapers appeared suddenly this week, fingers pointed at the governor’s office.
Democratic lawmakers and newspaper industry officials said they suspected that Mr. Christie was pressing for quick passage of a bill that would eliminate the requirement for public notices to be printed. The change could cost the state’s already-strapped newspapers millions of dollars in advertising revenue.
“It’s a broadside against a free press, nothing more, nothing less,” said Assemblyman John Wisniewski, Democrat of Sayreville. “I think it’s revenge.”
Mr. Wisniewski, who is campaigning to succeed Mr. Christie in 2018, said he had heard from fellow lawmakers in Trenton that the bill came from the governor’s office. It is scheduled for hearings in the Legislature on Thursday, indicating that it has the support of President Stephen Sweeney of the Senate and Speaker Vincent Prieto of the Assembly, both Democrats.

Publishers Notes: It's about time elected officials cut off the failing newspaper industry. Public and Legal Notices are no longer read in newspapers because no one is buying them. The majority of people are now going to social media/blogs to get their non fake news 100 to 1. Cut the newspapers off, I say and waste no time doing so. I'll add, the NORMAL rater for a bankruptcy in a newspaper is, (GET THIS) around $7,000.00. An Obituary averages $300.00. The blogs do not have the overhead and can blow away the prices of the Main Stream Media. Our taxes, (nation wide) would drop in the billions if they simply required a certain amount of traffic and the LOWEST BIDDER. Bring it on!
White House Taskforce Highlights Baltimore Progress, Makes Recommendations
After 18 months, a White House taskforce convened to tackle social and economic issues in Baltimore has identified priorities for federal assistance and plans for long-term prosperity in Baltimore.
"The Taskforce recommends that moving forward Federal agencies working in Baltimore sustain their existing investments, maintain interagency coordination, continue to be proactive, work to understand Baltimore’s vision and priorities, and continue to pilot programs in the City," reads the executive summary of the report published Wednesday. "Local and regional Federal field offices will continue to coordinate their work and be a point of entry into the Federal government for Baltimore City leaders."
City leaders and elected officials, including Mayor Catherine Pugh and the city's members of Congress, will discuss the report's findings at an event in Fells Point Wednesday afternoon.
The taskforce included representatives from a number of cabinet-level departments, as well as the General Services Administration, National Endowment for the Arts and the Small Business Administration. It's separate from ongoing negotiations between the city and the Justice Department on a consent decree for city police.

Newt Gingrich Slams ‘Idiots’ in Media
'When the propaganda media smeared Trump, the American people sided with Trump'
Newt Gingrich lashed out at members of the “propaganda media” on Tuesday, calling them “idiots” who can’t handle “the level of talent they are dealing with” in President-elect Donald Trump.
In a speech at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., the former House speaker outlined how Trump used his mastery of the media to overcome negative coverage throughout the campaign.
“One of the great disgraces of the propaganda media—all of us on the right should drop the term news media until they earn it—is that it cannot come to grips with the level of talent that it is dealing with,” Gingrich said. “He had an instinct for totally dominating the media.”
Unlike other politicians, Trump had the “guts” to stand up to the media and challenge their reporting, Gingrich said.
“If you attack Trump, he immediately counter-attacks,” Gingrich explained. “The media doesn’t understand—it’s not a function of personality. He learned with the New York media that you hit back as fast as you can so you’re the next edition.”
“It’s part of his style,” Gingrich said. “If you show him an opening, he’ll take it.”

Oops! Stein's Recount Turns Up More Votes Than Voters in Detroit
The recount crusade of Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein may have turned up massive voter irregularities, but they're not the kind Democrats were hoping to find.
In heavily-Democratic Detroit, more votes than voters were found across the city and now state Republicans are calling for an investigation.
According to the Detroit News, voting machines in more than one-third of Detroit precincts counted more votes than the actual number of voters who showed up.
The statewide recount, which was stopped by a judge on Friday, could not be performed in those precincts and others.

Democrats Not Excited About Party’s Future
Democrats are not excited about the outlook of their party after a stunning defeat in November, according to a new poll.
A mere 13 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters are excited about their party’s future, versus 35 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters who feel the same, according to a HuffPost/YouGov survey released Sunday.
While roughly half of Democrats said they feel satisfied about their party’s prospects moving forward, a quarter are dissatisfied, while another 13 percent are upset.
Meanwhile, Republicans are far more optimistic. Nearly three-quarters of GOP voters said they are satisfied, while 16 percent are dissatisfied and 6 percent are upset.
The responses from Democratic voters have significantly shifted since August when polls showed Democrat Hillary Clinton with a clear lead over Republican opponent Donald Trump. At the time, 30 percent of Democratic voters were enthusiastic about the party’s future compared to just 8 percent of Republican voters.

JUST IN: Jurors Convict Dylann Roof On All Counts In Church Slayings
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Dylann Roof was convicted Thursday in the chilling attack on nine black church members who were shot to death last year during a Bible study, affirming the prosecution’s portrayal of a young white man who hoped the slayings would start a race war or bring back segregation.
Instead, the single biggest change to emerge from the June 17, 2015, slayings that shocked the nation was the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse, where it had flown for 50 years over the Capitol or on the grounds. Roof appeared with the flag in several photos in a racist manifesto.
In his confession to the FBI, the gunman said he carried out the killings after researching “black on white crime” on the internet. He said he chose a church because that setting posed little danger to him.
Roof just stared ahead — much as he did the entire trial — as the verdict was read.

Pressing Your Phone Camera Against Your Finger Will Not Measure Your Blood Pressure
The tiny sensors in our smartphones can do amazing things, but what they cannot do is substitute for a blood pressure cuff. That’s unfortunate, because having your blood pressure measured can be painful and unpleasant. However, one app-maker ran afoul of federal regulators by claiming that your smartphone camera could be used to accurately check your vitals.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, developer Aura’s Instant Blood Pressure app did three things to cross the legal line.
First, it marketed the app by bragging about how accurate it is compared to a blood pressure cuff, which the FTC points out is not actually the case.
Second, the company’s own CEO left a review in Apple’s App Store without disclosing his relationship to the company.
Finally, the company’s website was full of enthusiastic testimonials, which the FTC determined were from employees and their family members.

Politico Fires Writer After She Suggests Trump Is Having Sex With Ivanka
Julia Ioffe, a former contributing writer for Politico Magazine who will be joining The Atlantic as a reporter in January, suggested Wednesday on Twitter that President-elect Donald Trump is having sex with his daughter Ivanka.
Politico told The Daily Caller that the tweet accelerated the timeline of her departure, and that Ioffe is no longer with the publication, effective “immediately.”
“This tweet is completely unacceptable and is an obvious violation of POLITICO standards,” a Politico source told TheDC. “Julia Ioffe is no longer with the publication.”
Ioffe tweeted out a link of a news report saying Ivanka will be using office space in the White House typically reserved for the first lady and commented, “Either Trump is fucking his daughter or he’s shirking nepotism laws. Which is worse?”
