Kidney Disease Epidemic: 60 Percent in US Will Fall Victim
We usually don’t give much thought to our kidneys. Most of us take it for granted that the body’s filters will continue to function as efficiently as the paper filters in our coffeemakers.
Yet, kidney disease is the nation’s eighth-leading causing of death. And it can sneak up on you before you even realize you have it.
“Kidney disease tends to be a silent disease until it’s very advanced,” says Beth Piraino, M.D., president of the National Kidney Foundation. “It’s very much associated with an increased risk of dying, particularly from a cardiovascular cause.”
You are more than likely to get kidney disease at some point, since lifetime risk is 60 percent. And once you get it, treatment options are often limited to dialysis, which requires regular mechanical filtering of the waste products in your blood, or a kidney transplant. There is a long waiting list for organ transplants.

What Kind of Conservatives Are These?
U.S. air strikes since Friday have opened a corridor through which tens of thousands of Yazidis, trapped and starving on a mountain in Iraq, have escaped to safety in Kurdistan.
The Kurds, whose peshmerga fighters were sent reeling by the Islamic State last week, bolstered now by the arrival of U.S. air power, recaptured two towns. But the peshmerga have apparently lost the strategically important town of Jalawla, 20 miles from Iran, the furthest east that ISIS forces have penetrated.
Last week's gains by the Islamic State caused Republican hawks to flock to the Sunday talk shows.
"ISIS is a direct threat to the United States of America," said Rep. Peter King. Sen. John McCain called for bombing ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

States Spent Nearly $31 Billion On Employee Health Insurance Last Year
States paid nearly $31 billion to insure their employees last year, according to a new Pew Charitable Trusts study.
The study offers a window into what is one of the largest sources of state health care spending, second only to Medicaid spending. On average, states spent $808 in premium payments per employee per month, Pew finds. But that number varied widely by state — in part due to factors policymakers can control, and in part to those they cannot.
An average state employee was on the hook for about 16 percent, or $155, of his monthly $963 premium, including coverage for dependents. Premiums were low in a handful of states spread throughout the south — Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina — and South Dakota. They were also very high in a handful of Northeast states — New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont — as well as Alaska and Wisconsin.

McDonald’s Fires Worker For Drawing A Swastika On Customer’s Sandwich Bun
A McDonald’s owner is apologizing and saying a worker at a North Carolina store was fired, after a customer claimed that she found a swastika drawn on her chicken sandwich’s bun with butter.
The woman tells WCTI that she found the Nazi symbol when she opened her sandwich to put mayonnaise on the bun.
“Is this a joke? Does somebody really think they’re funny?” she said, adding that went back into the restaurant to complain, and workers offered to replace it. But she said she’d lost her appetite at that point and wanted a refund instead.
“Many people died because of that symbol and it’s not something that should be taken lightly. It’s not something that should be thrown around,” she says.

Woman Climbs Airport Fence To Try To Stop Her Cheating Husband From Flying Away
A word to those hurting hearts out there: We feel your pain, but if you think your husband is flying off to see another woman, there are other ways to go about mending that broken heart other than climbing a 10-foot high barbed wire fence at an airport to try and stop his plane from taking off.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested a woman at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport after she made it over the top of a secure fence and onto the tarmac, reports the Chronicle Herald. She apparently believed her cheating husband was on the plane and was heading to another woman’s arms.

Outrage Over Who Will Be On U.S. Postal Stamps
Former Postmaster General, Benjamin Bailar, is not happy over the direction of the United States Postal Service. Bailar told Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe that the United States Postal Services is choosing unworthy topics for its stamp program.
Bailer wound up resigning from the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee. The Committee usually decides what goes on stamps, but their input lately is being ignored.
Bailar believes that USPS is going for the payoff instead of honoring and celebrating things that are great about the United States. In other words, the U.S. is "selling out" by embarrassingly choosing pop culture figures over more enduring images.
The new "Harry Potter Forever Stamps" is the straw the broke the camel's back.

Oil Companies Remove Staff from Iraq
Some major oil companies are evacuating staff from northern Iraq after President Obama authorized targeted airstrikes.
U.S. jet fighters on Friday launched air strikes against Islamic extremists in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, prompting Genel Energy (GEGYF), the largest independent oil producer in the region, to withdraw non-essential personnel from the area. Other oil production companies, including Afren (AFRNF) and Oryx Petroleum, were also withdrawing employees as well as temporarily suspending drilling at some sites.

Student Athletes to get Paid?
This past week may have finally marked the end of college athletes as amateurs, say experts.
It was on Friday that a district court judge in California ruled in favor of former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon, who sued the NCAA over compensation for the use of university player names and likenesses.
And just the day before, the NCAA—college sports' governing body—announced it would allow more freedom to schools and athletes on how they run their sports programs. That's likely to result in player stipends and increased financial aid.

Oh Really, Kitty Litter?
The Energy Secretary is vowing to reopen the nation's only permanent nuclear waste dump as soon as possible. Ernest Moniz admits the department still doesn't know what caused the nuclear leak in February. But, he says, "a plausible picture is emerging." He hopes to have a plan for reopening the mine in place by the end of September. But safety remains the priority. Moniz spoke to residents of Carlsbad, New Mexico, where the dump is located. One theory of what caused the leak focuses on organic kitty litter used to absorb moisture in the waste barrels. Investigators also blame inattention to safety at the dump.
Under The Obama Leadership...
The Drug Enforcement Administration paid more than $850,000 for confidential Amtrak passenger lists. The kicker? It could have gotten that information for free. Amtrak's inspector general says the DEA gave the money to one Amtrak employee, a secretary, over two decades. Amtrak police already work with the DEA, so it's not clear why the agency felt the need to pay an additional informant. The Amtrak IG says the train service needs to take measures to control weaknesses. The secretary was allowed to retire rather than face administrative discipline.
Update On USPS
A $2 billion loss at the Postal Service no longer turns heads but quickens calls for change. The agency posted the loss for the spring quarter, compared with a year earlier. It came despite an increase in revenue from shipping and package services. The agency says workers' compensation drove its expenses upward. CFO Joe Corbett says the Postal Service is being "extremely conservative" with its money, spending only what it has to to maintain its infrastructure. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) says the Postal Service needs to "right size itself." His democratic counterpart in the Senate, Tom Carper, renewed calls to overhaul legislation.

The ‘Freaky’ Optical Illusion That Tricks Your Eyes by Pitting ‘Two Sources of Information Against Each Other’
A simple — yet “freaky” — optical illusion that is making its rounds on the Internet might have some individuals questioning the reliability of their own eyes.
The illusion shows two clock-like objects spinning. When an individual focuses on the right circle, the left appears to be spinning clockwise. However, once the individual focuses on the left circle, the right appears to spin clockwise.
