Beatlemania Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Salisbury, MD – Four sharp looking men in their matching Edwardian suits, step on stage to sing live for the first time in America. Seventy-three million people were glued to their television sets to see the Ed Sullivan Show, and the band who would pave the way for rock n’ roll. “Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you,” the band sang as the crowd cheered, and bounced in their seats. The British invasion was here!

Fifty years later, CBS is commemorating the Beatles on one of the most historic moments in music and television. Premiering exactly to the day, date and time of the original event, “The Night that Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles,” will air February, 9 at 8 p.m. The night will include two of the original Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Star. Also, Beatles songs performed by Alicia Keys, John Legend, John Mayer, Keith Urban, Maroon 5 and many more.

CNN will also be airing a 10-episode documentary produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, called The Sixties. The series will begin with the Beatles and focus on other British bands. A one hour special aired Jan. 30, however, the full program will begin in May.

If the television specials aren’t enough to fill your Beatles craving, “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles,” will play at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. This stunning Broadway production is a live multi-media spectacular that takes you on an unforgettable musical journey through the life and times of the world’s most celebrated band.

The story of Rain begins with keyboardist Mark Lewis, and a group of four other musicians originally named “Reign.” Becoming popular in California during the 70s, the band was in demand to sing Beatles songs. A big break came when Dick Clarks asked them to sing for the movie Birth of the Beatles.

Iran Says Warships Headed Close to U.S. Borders

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian warships dispatched to the Atlantic Ocean will travel close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time, a senior Iranian naval commander said Saturday.

The commander of Iran’s Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, said the vessels have already entered the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa, the official IRNA news agency reported.

IRNA quoted Haddad as saying the fleet is approaching U.S. maritime borders for the first time. The Islamic Republic considers the move as a response to U.S. naval deployments near its own coastlines.

The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate its ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond.

Russian Official To Hotel Critics: We Have Surveillance Videos Of You In The Bathroom

What’s that, Olympic Games attendee? You’ve got a dirty hotel room with beers under the bed in Sochi? Your room has no hot water, or no water at all? Well, your complaints are aimed at trying to sabotage Sochi’s shining moment, said one official in response to Western critics.

The Wall Street Journal happened to be in the right place at the right time while on a tour of the new media center in Sochi this morning with Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations. He seems to share the view of many in Russia who think such criticism come from a Western bias against the country.

“We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day,” he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. “We’re doing a tour of the media center,” the aide said.

When asked again about the problems circulating in the media with ill-prepared hotel rooms, the WSJ says Kozak was dismissive.

“We’ve put 100,000 guests in rooms and only gotten 103 registered complaints and every one of those is being taken care of,” he said.

No Injuries After Air Force Jet Loses Pressurization

 BEDFORD — An Air Force Lockheed C-5 Galaxy transport jet flying to Delaware from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany lost pressurization over the Atlantic this morning, forcing the massive plane to divert to the Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee.

Lieutenant Colonel James G. Bishop, the base’s chief of public affairs, said it was unclear what caused the plane to lose pressure. The 10 crew members and 15 passengers on board were able to breathe using oxygen masks while the jet descended to a lower altitude, Bishop said.

The plane landed safely at Westover at 2:29 p.m., Bishop said. Medical crews were standing by, but passengers and crew reported no injuries.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Press Release 2-8-14

On January 27, 2014, members of the Worcester County Criminal Enforcement Team concluded a month long heroin and prescription pill distribution investigation. On that date the Criminal Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle that was destined to the Berlin area from Delaware for purpose of distributing a quantity of heroin to an undercover detective. During the course of this traffic stop, an individual identified as Edwin D. Horner, Age 45, of Milton, Delaware and a Juvenile, Age 17, were found to be in possession of 50 individually wrapped bags of heroin. These same two individuals are also involved in the distribution of Oxycodone to an undercover detective of the Worcester County Criminal Enforcement Team earlier in this investigation. The individuals were charged with the following offenses:

Edwin D. Horner III, Age 45, of Milton, Delawae

·         Conspiracy - Distribution of Oxycodone

·         Conspiracy - Possession with intent to distribute Oxycodone

·         Conspiracy - Possession of Oxycodone

·         Conspiracy - Possession of Heroin

·         Conspiracy - Distribution of Heroin

Juvenile, Age 17

·         Possession of Oxycodone

Edwin D. Horner III was subsequently committed to the Worcester County Jail on a $25,000.00 bond. This juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice. 

Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Statewide Operation

Members of the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) conducted a two day statewide proactive initiative combating those distributing child pornography on the Internet.

            For the past several months Investigators from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have been conducting investigations and identifying computers on the Internet that are offering pornographic videos of children for others to download.  Investigators were able to trace this information to numerous computers throughout the state.

            As a result of this operation twelve search and seizure warrants were executed throughout the state.  The participating agencies are as follows: Maryland State Police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore field office, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Anne Arundel County Police Department, Baltimore County Police Department, Baltimore City Police, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Howard County Police Department, Montgomery County Police Department,Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, and Army Criminal Investigation Division.

           

            Due to search and seizure warrants numerous items or digital media were seized and several individuals were identified that have a sexual interest in children, several charges are pending.  All digital items have been turned over to the respective agencies Computer Forensic Labs for analysis.

The Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is comprised of police agencies from around the state.  Its primary mission is to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation.  The Task Force works cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to provide resources to combat these crimes.  Additionally, the Task Force provides community awareness campaigns helping to prevent the spread of these crimes through education.

High Cost Of Common Core Has States Rethinking The National Education Standards

States are learning the cost of Common Core is uncommonly high.

The federally-backed standards initiative, first proposed by the nation's governors and an educators' association, seeks to impose a national standard for achievement among K-12 students. So far, 45 states plus the District of Columbia have signed on, with some implementing curriculum designed for the Common Core Standards Initiative during the current school year and the rest set to take part in the next school year. But several states are reconsidering their participation, and one big reason is the cost.

States will spend up to an estimated $10 billion up front, then as much as $800 million per year for the first seven years that the controversial program is up and running. Much of the cost is on new, Common Core-aligned textbooks and curriculum, but the added expenses also include teacher training, technology upgrades, testing and assessment. The figures are taking states by surprise.

Spanish Computer

A Spanish language teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. "House" for instance, is feminine:     "la casa." "Pencil," however, is masculine:       "el lapiz."  A student asked, "What gender is 'Computer'?"     Instead of giving the answer, the teacher divided the class into two groups, Male and Female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "Computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that  "Computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"),  because:     1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;     2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone  else;     3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and     4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck to buy accessories for it.     (THIS GETS  BETTER!)  The women's group, however,  concluded that computers should be masculine ("el computador"),  because:  1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems,  but half the time they ARE the problem; and  4. As soon as you commit to one,  you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won. Send this to all the smart women you know......And to all the men that have a sense of humor.

How Does Someone Do This For 20 Years And No One Noticed Til Now? My Heart Shattered.

For the past 20 years, a man named Roque “Rocky” Abalsamo did something every day that is simply heartbreaking. In 1993, his wife of 35 years, Julia “Julita” Echeverria Abalsamo, passed away. Ever since that day, he diligently sat by her grave in St. Joseph Cemetery in Boston, MA. He didn’t eat. He didn’t drink. All Rocky did was brave the heat, rain, cold and snow to be by his wife’s side.

Rocky had been with Julita since 1937, and he never wanted to experience day without her.

The couple met in the 1930s in their native Buenos Aires. Rocky simply heard Julita talking to her friends and realized that he needed to know the person he heard, a woman full of so much love and goodness. Basically, since that moment, the two had been together. They lived a happy life together, marrying the spring after they had met. They had two children, who they eventually followed to the United States.

ACIDIC CHESAPEAKE BAY WATER COULD THREATEN OYSTERS

COLLEGE PARK – As the world’s oceans get more acidic, Chesapeake Bay oysters could be at risk.

A more acidic bay could make it more difficult for mollusks, such as oysters, to build their shells through a process called calcification. But it could help crustaceans, such as blue crabs, build their shells more quickly, said Justin Ries, a professor at the Marine Science Center at Northeastern University in Boston.

This could disrupt the evolutionary balance of the two, Ries said, because blue crabs prey on oysters.

Toyota Still Considered Most Popular Brand: Consumer Reports

In its impactful annual survey, Consumer Reports measured public perception in seven car categories and Toyota, Ford came out on top despite recalls.

People love Toyota but think Land Rover stinks, according to Consumer Reports' 2014 Car-Brand Perception Survey. The magazine quantified Toyota's brand image to an indexed score of 145, which put it ahead of second-place Ford (120 points), third-place Honda (109) and Chevrolet (105). On the flip side, Land Rover's 4-point index score placed it last; sister brand Jaguar scored just 9 points.

Consumer Reports said brand perception reflects how consumers view auto brands across seven categories: quality, safety, performance, value, fuel economy, design/style and technology/innovation. Myriad factors, from marketing and recalls to actual hands-on experience and awards, influence the scores. And it's those categories — in that order of importance — that consumers find most important in cars, the magazine said.

Md. Bills To Ban Bulk Purchases Of Concert, Sports Tickets

WASHINGTON - Maryland lawmakers are trying to even the playing field for sports fans and concertgoers by banning automatic purchases of large blocks of tickets, which drives up the price for consumers.

The House passed a version of the bill Friday, which outlaws automated ticket buying software. This software is used to purchase blocks of tickets automatically and repetitively.

The computer-driven traffic often pushes out individuals trying to buy a few tickets to an event.

The Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition applauded lawmakers' work.

Conservative Activist Claims Rep. Cummings Tried To 'Intimidate' Her, Files Complaint

A conservative activist targeted by the IRS and other agencies claimed Thursday that Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings also tried to intimidate her, filing a formal complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics alleging an "abuse of power."

Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote and the King Street Patriots, aired the allegations during a hearing hosted by the committee on which Cummings sits. An attorney working with her also questioned whether Cummings might have encouraged the IRS and other agencies to target her groups.

Cummings, though, adamantly denied wrongdoing and said he can "assure" Engelbrecht that he did not direct anyone at the IRS to scrutinize her.
