Joe Biden's Teachable Moments

In one of those inspired innovations designed to keep American classrooms on the cutting edge of educational excellence, the administration has been sending Joe Biden out to talk to schoolchildren. Last week, it was the Fourth Grade at Alexander B Goode Elementary School in York, Pa., that found itself on the receiving end of the vice president's wisdom:

"Here in this school, your school, you've had a lot of teachers who used to work here, but because there's no money for them in the city, they're not working. And so what happens is, when that occurs, each of the teachers that stays have more kids to teach. And they don't get to spend as much time with you as they did when your classes were smaller.

"We think the federal government in Washington, D.C. should say to the cities and states, look, we're going to give you some money so that you can hire back all those people. And the way we're going to do it, we're going to ask people who have a lot of money to pay just a little bit more in taxes."

Who knew it was that easy?

So let's see if I follow the vice president's thinking: The school laid off these teachers because "there's no money for them in the city." That's true. York City School District is broke. It has a $14 million budget deficit.

So instead Washington, D.C., is going to "give you some money" to hire these teachers back. So, unlike York, Pa., presumably Washington, D.C., has "money for them"?

Three Cats Shot Three Times Each In Hunters Mill

On Saturday, October 22cnd, in the morning two cats were let out, 30 minutes later both cats came back shot 3 times each. Later that night, two houses were attempted to be broken into.

This happened in Hunters Mill, animal lovers should be aware. A police report has been made, but asked not to be told.

No one shoots a cat three times each to protect themselves...............

Publishers Notes: I received this information earlier today and thought it might be best to put this up as a top post for all to be aware. There seems to be quite a problem with people shooting and or attempting to shot animals in the Rockawalkin area. We have been told these animals will more than likely have to be put down.

80 YEARS LATER - SAME CULPRITS, SAME RAGE

The young man stands on the edge of his porch
The days were short and the father was gone
There was no one in the town and no one in the field
This dusty barren land had given all it could yield

I’ve been kicked off my land at the age of sixteen
And I have no idea where else my heart could have been
I placed all my trust at the foot of this hill
And now I am sure my heart can never be still
So collect your courage and collect your horse
And pray you never feel this same kind of remorse

The song from Mumford & Sons called Dust Bowl Dance is as pertinent to today as it was in describing the Great Depression.   I was taken by the lyrics and the rage in the song. The setting for the song is the Dust Bowl of the 1930′s in the US Midwest. Picture the Joads in Grapes of Wrath. As I listened to the song again this morning I was struck by the similarities between the time period described in the song and our present situation.

Labeling Tantrums A Mental Illness Doesn't help

In the winter of 2010, there was a lot of talk in the news (and I wrote an Op-Ed in The Boston Globe, "Warning label on new diagnosis") about a proposed new diagnosis for children, then called temper dysregulation disorder with dysphoria, or TDD. The committee that is assigned the task of creating the new DSM-V, the diagnostic manual for mental health, got a lot of flak, so now they have changed the name todisruptive mood dysregulation disorder, or DMDD.

Will Ruling On Tasers Change Police Procedure?

In 2007, a University of Florida undergraduate created a rallying cry when he pleaded with a police officer, “Don’t tase me, bro.” Now, a powerful federal appeals court in California has given support to the anti-Taser movement. The court ruled last week, in a case involving a pregnant woman pulled over for speeding, that using Taser stun guns on civilians can in some circumstances be unconstitutional. The ruling, although not a complete win for tasered civilians, should prompt police across the country to rethink when and how they use Tasers — and to use them less.
