Incident: Animal Cruelty
Date of Incident: 20 April 2010
Location: 1500 block of May Drive, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: Mark Laird, 20, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 20 April 2010 at 4:00 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into animal cruelty that allegedly occurred inside a residence in the 1500 block of May Drive in Salisbury. During the investigation the deputy learned that Mark Laird was accused of placing a cat that belonged to the complainant into the microwave and turning it on. Upon initiating the investigation, the complainant advised that the cat went outside and has not been seen since the microwave and is believed to have possibly succumbed as a result. After meeting with both the suspect and witnesses, the deputy determined that the incident warranted charges being filed.
The deputy completed an Application for Statement of Charges and received a warrant for Laird’s arrest from the District Court Commissioner. On 28 April 2010 the deputy placed Laird under arrest for Animal Cruelty. After processing at the Central Booking Unit and an initial appearance in front of the District Court Commissioner, Laird was released on Personal recognizance.

INDEPENDENT REVIEW SHOWS MARYLAND IS AMONG MOST CRIME-RIDDEN STATES IN THE U.S.
Governor O’Malley’s remarks about crime today are in direct conflict with an independent study by CQ Press report showing that Maryland ranked eighth highest in the country in violent crime. As Governor, Bob Ehrlich would begin immediately to work toward making Maryland safer.
“We have miles to go in reducing the awful toll of violence in our state,” Ehrlich said. “Ranking among the eight most violent crime-ridden states is not ‘progress.’ When we do make headway, it’s the police officers and sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers who deserve the credit,” Ehrlich said
Maryland had 33,614 violent crimes last year and ranked as the state with the second highest frequency of both murder and robbery in America;
Baltimore still has a shockingly high murder rate, and O’Malley’s characterization of Prince George’s County as a “crescent of death” surrounding the District of Columbia a few years ago also demonstrates his outlook for the county, Ehrlich said.
“The most successful anti-crime program any governor can offer is a revitalized economy,” Ehrlich continued. “I am confident that my plan for more jobs, lower taxes, and less government spending will not only create economic growth but also give our citizens the safer neighborhoods they deserve.” Bob Ehrlich has pledged to roll back the 20% increase in sales taxes implemented by the O’Malley Administration, and to encourage job development by reducing burdens and barriers handicapping small businesses around the state.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go
For years now I have been talking amongst friends about celebrities and mainly people in the West Coast simply turning in their keys to their home to their Bank.
Several years ago a company established a new business walking people through the legal process of how to walk away from your mortgage. One of the celebrities I can recall off the top of my head is Jose Canseco. We ran THIS STORY just over two years ago. Canseco owed a bank more than $2.5 million on the house and simply walked away from it.
Last night on 60 Minutes they did a segment on every day homeowners who COULD afford their mortgage simply turning in their keys to the Bank and walking away. Why, because their value dropped anywhere from 40% to 70% and quite frankly it wasn't worth paying a mortgage. By the time they excused their 10% down payment, (if they even had to put up that much) and went across the street and rented a similar home for less than half their mortgage payment, within only a few short years their credit would recover and they would have saved all that additional money for another down payment on another home. It's a risk, (credit wise) but one worth taking right now.
In my day and age, there was always a certain pride in fulfilling your contractual agreement and it was shameful for anyone to foreclose on anything. Today things are obviously different and quite frankly, I can't blame many of these people for walking away. It's a business decision, just like any other. Follow me for a second.
You see, the Banks have no remorse taking a home away from YOU, so why should YOU have a problem walking away from something they stated was worth X amount of money and it drops 40 to 70%? These are the "professionals" you and I are supposed to depend on.
There comes a time when you have to look at your losses and decide what's best for you and your Family. You might even say, two can play that game. Since it is not against the law to walk away from your home and mortgage, while this encourages even more of a financial disaster towards an already failing economy, it seems to be the ONLY way to get back at those who created a false economy. If it's not illegal to do so and the Banks continue to make billions of dollars off hard working Americans, well, perhaps now is the time to consider doing what others started doing years ago.
I called it years ago and to see 60 Minutes finally covering it, if you believed our economy was starting to come back, IMHO, those people who believed such a thing are more warped than ever before and should start wearing tinfoil hats.

Senator Colburn Files For Reelection
ANNAPOLIS – Senator Richard F. Colburn (R. Eastern Shore) has announced that he has filed for re-election to his 37th Legislative District seat (Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot and Wicomico counties). Senator Colburn highlighted issues he has worked on during his 2007-2010 term. Senator Colburn stated “I have always worked diligently to make sure the voices of my constituents are heard as I have strived to have an office responsive to constituent concerns. I believe that my constituents always come first.
I was responsible for giving Caroline County voters the ability to make the final decision in the 2010 General Election about the Hybrid Elected School Board Bill. I introduced legislation to increase chances of electing a resident Delegate for Caroline County. As your representative, I will continue to push for mid-shore transportation projects such as the dualization of state route 404 and the building of a new Dover bridge.
I championed a $500,000 Bond Bill for the new $3 million Dorchester General Hospital Emergency Center. During the 2010 Session I was successful in securing $70,000 for the Dorchester YMCA ($140,000 total/2007-2010) and $50,000 for the Richardson Maritime Museum. In Wicomico County, I was also successful in working with Delegate Norm Conway in securing $10,000 ($160,000 total between the House and the Senate) to assist the Salisbury Zoo for their animal health clinic renovation project.
I have been instrumental in working with the Cambridge City Council to revitalize the downtown area. I recognize there is a tremendous return on the tourist dollar (almost $29 to every $1 spent) which is why I will continue to do everything possible to make Dorchester County a real tourist destination point. I have worked hard in a bipartisan effort by listening and acting on behalf of my constituents to keep the Easton Memorial Hospital in the Town of Easton. This is a health and safety issue for Mid-Shore citizens. Keeping the hospital in Easton retains 1,100 jobs in the immediate area. Losing it would have been a devastating economic blow to the entire region.
The Delmarva poultry industry employs almost 15,000 people and is a $2 billion industry; because of this I have worked hard in promoting and preserving this industry. I have been a strong advocate for business on the Eastern Shore, particularly the agriculture and seafood industries. I will continue to help the embattled watermen by trying to keep them working on the Chesapeake Bay. I have also been proactive in trying to get high-speed internet and broadband on the Shore.
I am known for my tough anti-crime positions—advocating the death penalty for convicted first degree murderers and pushing for an amendment that would allow police officers to identify (via drivers license) second and third tier sex offenders.
I am proud to be an Eastern Shore Native, born and raised in Oxford. It has been my distinct honor and privilege to represent the people of the Eastern Shore. I have and will always love the Eastern Shore and will continue to work hard on its behalf.

Brooke Has End Of Study Scans This Week
Quick Update:
I’m exhausted and have to be up early Monday morning so I’m going to keep this very brief and will update more soon.
I had a wonderful Mother’s Day today (best one ever)! After church and brunch I packed and at 4:00 today Brooke, Bailey and I headed up to NJ to my Mom’s house. Brooke is having all of her End of Study scans and tests this week at CHOP. Monday morning she is having a Bone Marrow Biopsy. Tuesday she will have a CT Scan, MIBG injection and an Audiology appt. Wed she will have a MIBG Scan, Oncology clinic appt and Ophthalmology clinic. Since Brooke no longer has her “tubies” she will need to have IV’s placed and needle sticks so I imagine this will be very stressful for her which will be stressful for me as well along with the stress of the scans themselves and what the results could be. Please pray for clear scans/biopsies as well as comfort and peace. I will update whenever I get results or if there are any issues. Thank you so much!

The European Union put up a staggering $1 trillion Monday to contain its spreading government debt crisis and keep it from tearing the euro currency apart and derailing the global economic recovery.
Analysts said the huge sum supplied the "shock and awe" markets had been waiting for for weeks, at least in the short term, and the euro soared on the news.
European leaders negotiated into the early hours of Monday before reaching a deal in which governments that use the euro would join the EU and International Monetary Fund in putting up €750 billion in loans available to prop up troubled governments.

A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

The Morning Rotary Club held a concert this past weekend at Winter Place Park featuring PASSAFIRE & The Bonedaddys, which was very enjoyable.

Talk about great people and a great Town! Mardela was loaded with hundreds of locals enjoying a windy but beautiful day.
They had carriage rides, horse rides , games, ice cream, tractor pull, bbq chicken, just a fun packed day in the sun for all who attended.
S. U. MEN’S LACROSSE GETS 1st ROUND BYE AND 1ST BRACKET SEEDING IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
This seeding in the South bracket is debatable. The Gulls defeated Stevenson, as well as Gettysburg and the top north bracket seed, Cortland; Stevenson beat SU later in the season. But it means that SU will play the bracket games at home.
SU’s first game will be here on Saturday, May 15, starting at 7:30 PM, against the winner of Springfield-Widener, which meet on Wednesday. If the seedings win out, on May 19 the Gulls would face Haverford and on May 23 play a third game this year against Stevenson. The winner of the latter game would be the bracket champ.
The championship game will be on May 30 at M&T Stadium, against the north bracket winner, and it could be a rematch of Gulls and Cortland, starting at noon.
And the SU womens’ lacrosse team is also top ranked in the NCAA tournament. The Sea Gulls (17-1) will be looking for the program's first national championship this season.
The road will begin on Saturday as Salisbury will take the field at 11:30 a.m., to face the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between Christopher Newport University (13-6) and Catholic University of America (12-6). The Sea Gulls met both teams this season, coming away with a 21-6 win at Christopher Newport to open the season, and collecting a 16-7 win against Catholic in early March.
The other two guests at Sea Gull Stadium this weekend will not be known until Wednesday's first round is complete as the winner of games between The College of New Jersey against Cabrini College (11-7) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripts College (14-2) against Endicott College (16-4) will play in Saturday's other regional game. The second game on Saturday will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Salisbury will be a college lacrosse hot spot this weekend for sure.
