600 Comments Today, Our Record Day Was 633

It won't be long before we break our record day in comments as well. I told you that you guys were keeping me extremely busy today. 633 comments was our best day ever.

Bill Duvall must be sitting there thinking to himself, Self, I didn't get that many comments in 6 months, let alone one day. We've come a long way there Bill/Self.

Thanks for participating folks. Maybe the Daily Times will look at these numbers and realize they don't get this volume of comments in a total month either. Why, because we're real time. Because we share information our readers want to know about, not articles with an agenda for Gary & Louise.

Times have changed and if there's one thing I have learned about referencing the difference between the MSM & Blogs it's the fact that MSM Reporters have yet to survive in the Blogging Industry, yet Bloggers are taking over the MSM. Go figure, right Folks. They complain about how we're not Reporters/Journalists, yet we're beating them hands down as one man shows.

After today's numbers, I'm convinced the Daily Times is toast. In fact, I recently learned they're not even printing their own newspaper any more. I'm told they're farming the work out with another Printing Company and not even using that $3,000,000.00 Press to print their daily paper. Very Interesting!

Royal Farms Open In Blizzard

I know most companies are blasted for remaining open, but I would like to thank the employees at Royal Farms in Hebron for remaining open all night tonight. They are taking good care of the plow drivers whose breaks are few and far between. Bless them for being there for our guys!

Fruitland Update

City Hall will be closed on Thursday and there will be no trash pickup.

City of Salisbury State of Emergency, 6:45 pm Update

The City of Salisbury Emergency Operations Center has made contact with the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Management and requested assistance from the Maryland National Guard. The City has requested four (4) dump trucks, two (2) front end loaders, two (2) humvees and one (1) backhoe.

The City of Salisbury wants to reiterate that on this date at 2:00 pm, pursuant to Section 2.08 of the Salisbury City Code, Mayor James Ireton declared a state of emergency in the City. The provision of this section of the code states that the mayor “in the interest to public safety and welfare” can restrict vehicular traffic on city streets to vehicles that are under operation by essential personnel. Essential personnel shall include authorized personnel responding to the declared state of emergency, peace officers, emergency management or rescue personnel,
medical personnel, utility personnel, snow clearance and building and systems maintenance personnel, members of the media, carriers and drivers of commercial motor vehicles transporting commodities such as heating oil, propane, gasoline and salt, or staple grocery items to food stores, or deliveries of agricultural products necessary to maintain the life of livestock, and employees of critical 24/7 facilities such as health care facilities, commercial facilities and correctional institutions. Private sector businesses are strongly urged to consider the safety of their employees and the restriction of travel during this storm when deciding whether to remain in operation. Violations of this directive may result in the issuance of a civil citation with a fine penalty of up to $ 500.00.

The state of emergency remains in effect and due to the “white out” blizzard conditions, all snow removal vehicles have been pulled from city streets. Once the situation has become safe for operators of the vehicles, the City of Salisbury Public Works Division will resume snow removal beginning with the seven (7) designated primary snow removal routes. As these routes are cleaned, the snow removal will continue with residential areas.

During this snow event, the composition and weight of the snow has caused unsafe loading conditions on many business and residential roofs, primarily those that are flat. There are several methods utilized by Salisbury building inspectors to gauge the safety of a roof in these conditions. The building inspectors are warning residents to be aware of:
Windows and doors that are binding (do not operate properly)
Homeowners hear unusual noises, such as creaking or cracking
Homeowners observe leaks from ceiling areas
Homeowners see or observe new cracks in the ceiling
Ceiling tiles begin falling

What the homeowner can do to minimize further damage:

Remove snow from elevated decks
Minimize Ice build-up on HVAC system if located under rain gutters.

As this event develops, additional press releases will be made as needed.

What A Difference A Few Days Can Make

On 1-30-10 we had our first decent snow storm. Today I walked outside to see two of my vehicles had completely disappeared under the snow.

The snow that was on the roof of the Barn decided it wasn't going to stay there any more and fell right on top of the front end of these vehicles.

I happen to think its pretty cool. Now getting them out, that's an entirely different story. Thank goodness for that snow blower though!

SECU Closed On Thursday

SECU (State Employees Credit Union) will be CLOSED Thursday due to the weather. SECU ATM Kiosks will remain operational barring any network problems related to the storm or facility closure at their respective locations. Kiosks are located at the Ocean City Convention Center, UMES, Salisbury University, State Health Department in Cambridge, and at the SECU Branch in Salisbury. See www.secumd.org for any additional information.

We Just Broke Another Record Day And It's Only 5:30 PM

There's no question about it, Salisbury News is the Go To place to get your local news and information.

Man, you guys are keeping me busy today! The comments are also flying in, no time to count them at this point.

Tell your friends, your neighbors, family members and business associates. If you want up to the minute news and information, we're delivering it in real time, not a day or two later.

I can't wait to see what the totals will be for today! Stay warm, stay indoors and by all means stay off the roads.

Town Manager Says, "Please Follow Same Guidelines As The City Of Salisbury"

Town Manager John McDonald just called me and informed me he cannot get to a computer at this time but asks the residents of Fruitland to please follow the same guidelines that the City of Salisbury recently released.

STAY OFF THE ROADS, he said. He went on to say it's a complete mess out there.

STAY OFF THE ROADS!

Now that there's a State of Emergence in effect locally, I just received word on just how bad things are out there.

State Troopers are stuck just about everywhere. Vehicles are stuck all over the place and even snow plows can't get through any more. In fact, I was told, STAY OFF PITTSVILLE AND GUMBORO ROAD! It is impassable, period.

The snow drifts are now as high as the snow plows all over the County. If you or someone you know is stuck out there right now I'm told they are to abandon their vehicle and find a ride home, seriously.

Only big wreckers are out there trying to pull plows and emergency vehicles out first and then they'll get to everyone probably some time tomorrow. Folks, it's really bad out there, as you can see from the images above taken just a short while ago.

Serious Problems In Fruitland Shopping Center

The roof on the shopping center where Big Lots is located is having issues at the other end of the shopping center where the old furniture store used to be.

One of the interior walls that divided the furniture store and the shop next door has collapsed from the stress on the roof.

Firefighters are concerned that the windows might blow out of the building under pressure. I hear WBOC is on the scene, (Idiots). We held off this story for the past hour because we wanted confirmation. We had been told earlier that Big Lots had some problems and it turned out that just wasn't true.

Interesting how there was issues at the other end of the shopping center. Oh well, that's what's going on in the Fruitland area.

State Of Emergency

On this date at 2:00 pm, pursuant to Section 2.08 of the Salisbury City Code, Mayor James Ireton has declared a state of emergency in the City. “Any natural disaster …resulting in the death or injury of persons or the destruction of property to such an extent that extraordinary measures must be taken to protect the health, safety, and welfare” is the section of code cited. Section 2.08.040 states that the mayor “in the interest to public safety and welfare can make the following orders:

Order the temporary closing of any and all streets, alleys and other public ways in the city
Issue such other orders as are imminently necessary for the protection of life and property.”

The staff of the Salisbury Emergency Operations Center has been activated and a further update on this situation will be released during a press conference at the Salisbury Police Department at 3:00 pm.

The National Weather Service has advised that the City of Salisbury is under blizzard conditions from 9:00 am until 12 midnight, with an expected snow accumulation of approximately 7 to 9 additional inches and winds gusts in excess of 45 miles per hour.

The state of emergency will be in effect at 2:00 pm, and due to the “white out” blizzard conditions, all snow removal vehicles have been pulled from removal activities.

The Wicomico County Department of Emergency Management has been notified of this action and the staff of the Salisbury Emergency Operations Center will be requesting assistance from Wicomico County as needed.

The Salisbury Emergency Operations Center is requesting that all members of the public refrain from driving in the city due to the current conditions. After 6:00 pm on this date, pursuant to the provisions cited in section 2.08.040 of the City code, vehicles operating on the roadway may be stopped and enforcement action may be taken.

THE DAILY TIMES VERSES SBYNEWS

Today I couldn't help but to notice the stark contrast in media spin between The Daily Times verses SBYnews. Upon reading the DT section - Our View - Salisbury Has A Growth Industry - it tries to shed light on an extremely dark subject - Salisbury University's massive expansion. The article then goes on and tries to justify that SU's continued construction - (I say economic destruction) - is an economic asset for our locality.

My own humble opinion - is that SU is really creating a burden on our tax structure.
I'll try to clarify this point by posing the following questions:

1. Did not SU dislocate 'private businesses' and thus take under its governmental umbrella private lands which were previously adding to the public coffers through annual real estate taxes?

2. Did not SU discourage private employment verses public employment by helping to eradicate those businesses which - incidentially- contributed a significant portion to social security, sales taxes, inventory taxes, state and federal income taxes. Not to mention the personal income tax revenues that were derived from actually 'creating something'.

3. Did not SU significantly contribute to help strain our City and County's infrastructural resources -(sewer, water, police, fire protection) - by making room for a significant increase in our areas population? Not to mention the environmental ramifications - such as a No. 2 fuel oil spill that just so happened to work its way to the Wicomico River.

4. Was it not taxpayers money that helped to fund these land aquisitions and capital improvements that otherwise would have been funded through the private sector?

And people wonder why SBYnews is 'knocking the socks off' of The Daily Times. Its liberal progressive attitudes like these that helps to bring the masses to the - 'real deal' - SBYnews.

Blizzard Conditions - stay off roads

I had to get my kids from my parents house from Willards and get back home eastbound. Here's a few pics from Willards to the Berlin area. Many roads have snowdrifts on the roadway, including Rt. 5o. Please stay off the road...nothing's open anyway!
