Local Company Looking To Debunk Pre-Built Home Myths

DELMAR – Thinking about a new home?

Atlantis Homes wants you to think about a manufactured one. More than a decade after setting up shop in Delmar, staff members at the company say they’re still working to break the stereotypes associated with pre-built homes.

“Some people are still skeptical but they’ve come a long way,” said Randy Merritt Jr. of Atlantis Homes.

According to Merritt, the manufactured and modular homes being sold by the company today are made to last decades and provide buyers with an affordable housing option. Though sales slowed when the economy did around 2008, they’ve been picking up within the last few years as buyers have realized their mortgage payment in an Atlantis home is often no more than a rent payment would be.

“Our sales have increased as more people are choosing home ownership rather than renting,” Merritt said.

"Last Decades", some homes, if built right, will last centuries.

Most "manufactured homes" are better built simply because they're constructed without being exposed to the weather before completed. Better quality control.

Prefab homes are good because they're built in contained conditions where rain and other elements don't sabotage. But a nicely built home with quality materials and craftsmanship still has more value than prefabs. Resale is much higher. So it's not really worth the expense unless you're going to go the full nine. Shame there isn't a company in town working towards rehabbing more of Newtown because those homes are gorgeous yet they sit there rotting away due to apathy and a crappy surrounding area. Once again greedy landlords junking up the neighborhood in the name of the almighty dollar.

Manufactured and modular homes are two different things. One is a trailer and one is a house built indoors in sections.

Thirty years is the build quality. Just as you pay it off it turns into a money-sucking white elephant, then turns into a crappy rental and the neighborhood follows it.

When I sold my modular home I was told not to mention it to the buyers, and it was built so good that even the home inspectors had no idea it was brought in by sections.I got the same price that I would have gotten even if it had been built on site.

I guess it would depend on who is doing the building of the modular. Some are ok some are not. Just like buying any house. My inlaws have a beautiful home built by Nanticoke Homes that they set on a full walk out basement. They have had no problems or had to replace anything. A friend has a modular and the cabinets in it look like they are made from cardboard and the interior doors are paper thin.

Just watch out for Donaway Homes.

I have seen homes in Nithsdale that are of incredibly poor construction and detailing, inside and out. This is just to say that there are good builders and there are terrible builders.
