Resume:
Rehoboth Beach, DE- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early last evening.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. as George A. Bryant was operating a 2010 Gillig Bus, owned by Delaware Transit Corporation, northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) approaching the intersection with Shuttle Road. The bus was changing lanes from the left travel lane into the left turn lanes in order to make a left onto Shuttle Road. Immediately upon turning into the turn lanes, a 37 year old male was walking with his bicycle northbound in the roadway with his back to traffic and was struck by the bus from behind. The pedestrian was thrown forward and landed against the east edge of the median while the bicycle was partially run over by the bus, and remained lodged under the left front, as the bus came to a controlled stop in the turn lane.

The 37 year old male was transported from the scene by local EMS to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He was not carrying a flashlight while walking in the roadway, nor was one attached to his bicycle.

George Bryant was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision. The bus he was operating was empty at the time and was out of service.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Traffic in the area was impacted for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The beach areas need a PSA on riding bicycles at night without lights and reflective clothing.

And the police need to enforce bike safety laws instead of just noting them as contributing factors in traffic cases.
