I Think It's Time To Bring This Structure Down
As this Barn was once a vision of pride and beauty, the property owner off Rt. 50 has allowed it to get to a point in which the County should step in and have them take it down before someone gets hurt. It seems evident to me that they have no interest in repairing it as I have been taking photos of it for years and it truly is on its last leg.

Although I would agree we don't want to get anyone hurt, other than the owners, who could get hurt? This isn't public property. If government starts stepping in deciding what needs repair / what doesn't, where do they draw the line? What if the owners are strapped for money at this point and forcing them to spend the money to tear this down puts them in a position where they lose everything?
Is it an eye sore? Yes, but not to everyone and probably no more an eye sore than some of the colors people choose for their houses. Artists have searched these types of structures and many of us have admired the photos and paintings of these for years!
I bet the actual framing wood is worth alot, probably giant sections of wood.
This barn and others like are a part of history on the shore. It has character. I agree it is in pretty bad shape, but it is a privately owned building and nobodys business but the owners as to what to do with it. I agree with Richard 8:39, where do we draw the line??
This just shows that there is too many IDIOTS riding the streets with cameras!
Somebody should take that camera & teach the owner to mind his own bussiness.
It is charming and a picture that helps us recall earlier times. I like it alot better than the new fire dept!
Joe do I sense a slight twinge of big government in your post.
I thought you would be the last person to suggest government intrusion on to private property.
This mind set in equal to some government official coming to your house and telling you you had to empty your pond, to prevent someone from drowning.
I think one of the cool parts about this Blog is that ideas can be thrown out there and everyone has the opportunity to give their own opinion about each issue. Certainly I am NOT alwas right but at least we can discuss it and see how the majority feels.
That being said, when I was a kid, (like most others) we were curious about such structures and wandered into many of them. Were they safe, no. Could something have hapened to us, certainly.
I love this Barn. I can't tel you of another one like it. I would love to see it sured up and standing for another 100 years. If you hadn't noticed around the Eastern Shore, many of them in the past few years have in fact crumbled down. I have friends out there who like to take pictures of just these structures alone.
If in fact the property owner cannot afford to take it down, donate it to the local Fire Department and let them burn it. That's done all the time.
Thanks for taking the time to share your own opinion.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love this barn. Let people be responsible for there own actions. If in the unlikely event someone should get hurt, the owners are responsible, not the government. Big brother should never get involved in situations like this, what about property rights?
Theres companies up north that would buy the wood if it were what i think it is.
Many of these old barn are made from cypress wood and are very valuable.
I love to see the old barns and the old houses.
I don't think it should be torn down, it should either be repaired or allowed to die gracefully as it seems to be doing.
The property is not in town so it doesn't pose a true hazard except to trespassers.
It's bad enuf we are told what and how many un-used vechicales or other certain items we can NOT have "stored" on our own property ....now this?
Since you asked Joe. I have to agree with everyone else here...BIG BROTHER needs to stay off our land and our belongings on said land, and allow us to do with "OUR" land what we choose to.
Kids have been wandering into situations that could harm them everyday since the beginning of time....as we all did when we were young. kids will be kids.
Chill Joe, we have far greater things to worry about as a "people" then this. ie....obama drama!
D.
Enlighten me, old wise one. Just what exactly do we have to worry about with your so called Obama Drama?
Some of you people need to get over what the majority of Americans voted for.
Americans wanted their taxes raised. Americans want to pack up and bolt out of Iraq. What's to worry about?
Go down three more posts and look at that house next to the Police Station. I guess these properties should stay standing for however long people want, right?
Looks better than some of cities rental stock
I have to agree with Wymzie, those old barns have a lot of character and have inspired some beautiful paintings. Goes to show that nostalgia rules, that old barn was probably sitting there during the stock market crash of 1929, not much has changed has it? The barn is still standing, it's the nation that's falling apart.
I like it and it is a privately owned structure. I think i will sit back and smoke an A-Fuente Gran Reserva and mind my own business.
its not your property and NOONE has a right to tresspass so if someone gets hurt then they should not have been trespassing to begin with. people need to stop meddling into others peoples business. There are alot of other things to blog about go find them.
Condemn it then you have a right. I don't know what the laws are on structures that aren't a residence. Nuff said
Think the property belongs to Dr. McGee, from Johnson & McGee Animal Hospital. He is retired.
keep your nose out of the private property. are you jealous ? if you don't like the way it looks ,aaa.. I don't know;,Just don't look at it. Dah .
How do you know Joe didn't ask that question as just bait to see how others truely feel? That's pretty slick, just call me paranoid! Can't take every single thing in life being overly serious every waking moment.
Several people expressed differing opinions and they were posted. Take your shoes off and stay a while LoL
Ya gotta watch Joe, he's a twicky wabbit! : )
In a metaphoric way, this could be General Motors and the citiens whisper as they reluctently notice:" The authorities should do something before someone gets hurt" Joe, this is a topic you should jump on, as the next few months will see risky actions to help them. They should be allowed to fail!
"Falls comin"...
I think the barn is awesome, BUT, it has been neglected for too many years. It does break my heart to see this piece of history just crumble and die.
A great story about this barn is back in 90 the house was rented by some college friends of mine and they would throw huge drunken keg parties and on one such occassions in a search for more wood for the bonfire some found alot of boards in the barn. The boards turned out to be thousands of dollars worth of walnut the property owner was storing in the barn. Everytime I ride by in my minivan with my screaming kids I remember those carefree times. Some many of these old places have lots of memories of all sorts for all kinds. Leave it Alone!!!
