Yeppers, one day I'd like to be a Salisbury Fire Fighter. I say the only man in the entire Department is Larry Dodd. Now here's a guy willing to stand in front of PAC14 and tell the world how it really is. Then when the Mayor yelled at him off camera, he manned up and told her flat out, I'm here as a Tax Paying Citizen and I have every right expressing my opinion. He didn't hide behind a letter with no name and return address. Granted, IMO he's paying the price but I'd rather be a MAN than take orders from pansies, hoping the Uniform would make me look stronger in the end.
If I ever need help, I'll call on real men from Delmar who don't spend their days on line calling black people the "N" word because they think they can get away with it. So until that happens, basically, regardless of some peoples opionions on race or crappy attitides (which exsist at every job not just fire depts) I feel that they still need to be some what respected they, despite their flaws are out there doing what we are not, possibly risking their lives.

I happened to have spent the last three days at Cherrystone Park on the Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia with my Wife and Grandson.

If I were him I MIGHT accept an apology for the first comment (though you were referring to his Dad...and we know how YOU are about family), though the second comment could really be lawsuit material; libel. Probably a good thing you are dealing with this person because though he may get mad, he is not the sort of person to get even. You are correct, you owe ME nothing, though I don't recall asking for anything either.

A large percentage of local firemen who are almost (not quite) exclusively white, and primarily from rural, good 'ol boy backgrounds, tend to be quite racist in their private views, or when they think they are giving opinions anonymously.
This is hardly a news flash. Wicomico County, and the Eastern Shore in general, are hardly known as bastions of progressive views.
What is the solution?

New to your blog here, pointed out to me by a co-worker, someone with family and friends heavily involved in local volunteerism. I'm not sure why you're so down on VFD's. I hope you never have a fire at your home, but if you do, my money's on the people you've been running down, that they'll put all this aside, show up anyway, and risk their lives to save your property, no matter what you've said about them, because they take their work and their commitment seriously, as a matter of honor. Maybe then you'd understand their value to the community and have some respect for them.

Seriously Joe, you need to watch out on how you put all volunteer firefighters in a bad light. My family has in 3 gererations and put over 110 yaers in the SFD vol division. Volunteers' sole financial support comes from the mail in the form of public donations, we need this to exist and serve this community. Not all orginizations are perfect, there are some bad apples in all of them. But when and if the time comes that you or any of your family needs us, we WILL be there to help save your lives or property. By the way I do not drink, smoke or condone racist actions.
