US Workforce Participation - At An All Time Low

The employment situation in Wicomico County is a microcosm as to what is happening all across America. Last night on FOX news - Kelly Files - it was shown that 92 million Americans have dropped out of the US labor force - the most in US History.  Who is to blame?

Obama's economic policies have not worked as this is the worse economy since the Great Depression.  December's US BLS jobs numbers were released yesterday and the job numbers were BAD.   The workforce participation rate hasn't been this low since 1978.  The statistics are terrible. The number of hours worked fell, and, the number of temporary workers went up.

In comparison locally, here in Wicomico County our workforce participation numbers have been falling precipitously each and every month for 11 consecutive months, and, it has fallen 16 out of the past 22 months. Wicomico County is now experiencing job loss rates well over 1000 jobs per month.  We need jobs and we need them fast.  When one factors in the increases in our population growth - we are simply not keeping pace with job generation.

Here at SBYnews we have, relentlessly, been trying to drive this point home so that you - the Voters - will exert pressure to demand a change in direction.  We need leaders that will lead from the front - and not behind.  We encourage all of our audience to stay engaged and not to let-up on holding their 'feet to the fire'.  The election is just around the corner this is the opportune time to try and hold those in office accountable.  As for the newcomers - ' the field has been plowed' - now is the time to engage.

Thanks Beezer. However, let me say this. Rick Pollitt had PROVEN to be a complete failure for Wicomico County. I'll repeat, a complete failure.

He's known about these jobs reports. The man never shows up in the office on Fridays, in case you didn't know this. He spends one or two days a week in Annapolis, so there's at least 2 or 3 week days he's not even in the office.

You people need to get your heads out of your a$$es and wake the hell up because THIS IS IT.

IF you don't make massive changes this next go around in the City, County and Presidency I can absolutely guarantee you we will become a dependency government and the majority of you will be on your knees begging the government for help.

You'll be losing more jobs, (more like 1,200 a month in Wicomico County) you'll be losing your home, over 400% higher foreclosure rate in Wicomico County in the last year.

Rick Pollitt is USELESS. Nice guy, I know. Residents made a HUGE mistake voting in a County Executive form of government but I guarantee you, this will become the most important election this country and world has ever seen.

I, (for one) will not stand by and watch other Countries laugh in our face because we've been so stupid and foolish.

I don't care how busy you are, YOU need to get out and VOTE. And YOU need to bring someone to the table that has a very serious and successful business background. YOU need to demand your County Council change the 5 year minimum to live in Wicomico County to qualify to run. We can recruit someone from ANYWHERE in the Country if we change that and the Good Ol' Boys disappear.

I agree, the local job market is horrible. Most employers (at least the ones remaining) are not hiring any new help and are even trying to cut back their present staff.

I have never seen the economy this bad in and around Salisbury. Not in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or 2000.

Let take a look, gas tax increase, rain tax, bay bridge toll increase, forced to pay for healthcare regardless of affordability, lack of decent paying jobs, workers not receiving cost of living raises, inflation doubling, welfare a way of life, and cutting social security that employees and employers contributed to, and government has borrowed against. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

Response to 3:33 Posting

There is nothing left. The little bit of manufacturing that is here is not expanding. We use to have some manufacturing base - but they are now all gone. Bayliner Maxim, Haliburton, Crown, Campbell's Soup, Shawnee Homes, Criscraft, Grumman, I could go on and on. The only thing that has changed is there are more Donut shops, restaurants, and Pawn & Sex shops.

I agree, the local economy appears to be shot.

It's all about greed. Look at PRMC CEO pay. Loss of jobs will affect even the rich in time.

The video link says it all. I have lost count on the number of times Salisbury News has posted these alarming jobs statistics for Wicomico County. Yet the condition just keeps deteriorating.

Joe, you cannot say you didn't provide ample warning to the public.
In my honest opinion most all of the guard should be booted out. There is nowhere for my kids to go and I hate to say it because I love them. But they cannot make it out here under this environment.

This is a GREAT VIDEO!!! Boy owe Boy does it drive the point home.

Talk about hitting close to home? This FOX news video says it all.

Thanks Joe, I am sending this article to the rest of my family.

Joe, I would go so far as to say that it was SBYNEWS that broke this story. Talk about Deja Vu, SBYNEWS has been broadcasting this info for over a year now and all of a sudden it has now become front and center.

Salisbury, like the rest of Maryland, is not business friendly. Just ask any building contractor who have tried to get a building permit in the past 10 years. And the corporate tax is so high few businesses want to come here. So if I were looking for expansion in the area it would be in Delmar De. Quit bitchin until you quit voting for Democrats!

Obama has had over six d_ _mn years now to gain some employment ground. Instead of offering yet another extension of unemployment benefits (99 weeks + 12 weeks more)why isn't he doing something in trying to help job growth.

The guy is so out of touch, how did he get in there.

If Joe was Mayor, this sh!t would have been FIXED in 6 months or less.

JoeAlbero said...

anonymous 3:57, Crazy, isn't it?

Here we have all these alleged "More news in less time" and "Delmarva's news leader" out there and yet you hear NOTHING about this.

You know what Folks, this has got to be one of the BIGGEST and most important topics a community can be aware of, yet they remain silent in the media. Its no wonder the Governor offered ME a Press Pass, in which you'll see NONE of the Local Media carrying them.

More importantly, your local media has a responsibility. The intent is to keep you informed but they're more interested in weather and sports then they are FAMILIES GOING BROKE, LOSING THEIR JOBS AND HOMES.

The news shouldn't be about, oh sh!t, how did that happen!!!!

You should be EDUCATED well in advance but they're too afraid to rock the political boat. They're too afraid they will get denied information, like Ireton has done from the very beginning, cutting off publicly the Daily Times because he didn't like what they said. It's about punishment.

Well, GUESS WHAT, Salisbury News is constantly beating the rest of the media on ALL topics, including local political news and we have NEVER been afforded the press releases or conferences.

So you SHOULD blame WBOC, WMDT and the Daily Times because IF they actually had people on the ground who CARED they too could get the information we provide WITHOUT kissing their A$$.

I actually like Rick Pollitt and even Jim Ireton, as men. I also like Martin O'Malley. However, as these three men know, I can't stand their politics. Unlike Rick Pollitt and Jim Ireton however, Governor O'Malley and I know how to agree to disagree.

Citizens need to put more pressure on the local media by letting them know they are FAILING them. The local media only have the STONES to ask our elected officials questions AFTER SBYNews publishes an article about a particular subject. They tell the Mayor and Executive, well, it's already on Salisbury News, so can you answer the question. They do now, (however) have the stones to be first to ask. They do not have the people on the ground, (investigative reporters) who have a heads up on stories like this topic at hand.

So WHY do you PAY for a paper that is so far behind or watch a program and think, hey, I read that yesterday on SBYNews, or even THREE years ago.

Why should I be concerned about this? The job market and the unemployment rate are no concern to me. I haven't worked in over two years and have received unemployment the whole time. I also receive SNAP (food stamps to you fools) free healthcare from Medicaid, a welfare check every month and occasionally I pick up a temporary job that pays cash.

I don't have to pay for daycare for the kids because I'm home most of the time. My husband is in the same situation so there is always somebody here to watch the kids.

Add it all up and there is no reason I should go work all day and bring home less at the end of the month than I get now. Fools!

I get Free Housing, Electric, Car, Food, spending cash, use FOOD Stamps to buy my beer, sleep in all day + party all night smoking reefer...I say life is great...

To each his own 5:11 but I but I still prefer my job. It's great to go and buy myself a new car (Volvo wagon this time) any time I please. Gas prices concern me, but I can well afford them. My dog needs a bath, or my windows need washing, no problem-I pay someone to do it. I can buy whatever, whenever I want at the grocery store and if I don't feel like cooking, we can eat out at any restaurant we chose without any concern as to the cost. If I go clothes shopping, I can also buy whatever I want, whenever I want. Weddings, graduations, birthdays, depending on the person they will get at least a hundred dollar check and I won't miss it.
You have accomplished nothing more than to reduce your family to slaves, which is nothing to be proud of. If you knew what people say behind your back including teachers, medical professionals you would be fuming.
They make fun of you and your children. But that's okay because slaves like you, give us something to laugh at. To us you and you spawn are nothing but 2nd class citizens to be looked down upon and ridiculed. You are a peon totally dependent on what pittance the government throws at you. A weak person who clearly has done everything wrong in their life.

I think Megan Kelly did a superb job in showing what has transpired under Obama. To think that 92 mil out of 330 mil are without work, this is startling revelation.

No wonder there are bullets flying, heat pumps missing, the poverty is breeding crime. I have known for a long time that things are bad as my neighbors are losing their homes.

The employers added a paltry 74000 jobs and the unemployment rate is 13.1% when you take into account the number of workers that have fallen off the dole.

This is 5:11 and I say 6:07 is the slave. He/she prostitutes himself to an employer for a measly paycheck every week. He/she works when the employer says so, takes off when told to and faces the fear of layoff at any time.

Since my husband is not employed he is free to go fishing, hunting or crabbing any time we need food. We have a freezer full of venison, geese and fish. I grow a vegetable garden in the summer and can or preserve the harvest. For things like shrimp or mushrooms we use our SNAP cards. We get subsidies for our electric bill and our heating oil. We don't worry about the price of gasoline either because we have plenty of cash from under-the-table jobs. And we don't have to pay any stupid income tax on it! You probably pay at least 35% on your paycheck, if not more. We get t keep everything we bring home. We don't get docked for unemployment, FICA or Social Security. We both have enough quarters that we can draw Social Security in a few years (if there's anything left by then). The only tax we pay is the stupid 6% sales tax and there are a lot of times we can avoid that by paying cash, again, under the table.

Anybody who works for an employer and pays taxes is a fool!

There is something 6:07 has that you will never have. Integrity, honesty and self worth. You are the slave to the government and nothing more.

This person who may be real or not with this post about not working and feeling wonderful... please

I am self-made, and make a ton of money, yup I pay taxes.. but if you think you have such a great life not working and collecting measly food stamps.. you really have no idea and probably haven't left Salisbury your whole life.... probably did not even graduate high school... you are the epitomy of success.....lol

The attitude you have is the problem this country has, but never had until just recently(past 20-25 years). People before that were independant and actually cared about building a better country and themselves --You are pathetic, basically what we all call Eastern Shore trash... so go ahead and pat yourself on the back for being such a low-life---like the guy said before... we laugh at people like you, we don't feel sad

Enjoy your single-wide while I live in luxury!

All of my friends make huge paychecks.. not small ones... or non-existent ones that you claim are measly...

5:20, I have a feeling you're lying to get a rise from the readers, but if you're telling the truth remember, what the government gives you they can and will stop it anytime they want.

once they spend all of the taxpayers money, they will have to stop because they don't have any...

We just got a new county assessment on our house in Salisbury. I bought it in 2006 for $243,000.It is now valued at $161,000. However the taxes of over $3000 have remained the same. HOW DOES THAT WORK? Gotta love Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately people like 5:20 know how to multiply but have no idea how to provide for what they spit out. Sorry excuse for "parents." I want to know what kind of trash raising someone like this? And now the trash has multiplies creating more trash.

Anonymous said...

5:20 is either an Obama troll/instigator or a GOP sarcasm specialist.
The fact is this economy is a reflection of Obama himself.
It is all made up. It is a facade, a front, a FRAUD with no substance. Just like Obama.
Liberals, Socialists and Communists alike see it, know it and are living it just like the rest of us, the difference is they are to stupid or ashamed to admit they're politics do not work. Whats worse is, they don't care as long as the Social agenda is a success in their minds.
SO, they are willing to sacrifice this once great nation for gay marriage, gun control, immoral economic policies and taxes and control of the judiciary.
We all will suffer and be miserable just like in Communist countries where everyone lives in squalor without freedom and under complete Government control.
Be happy kick a leftist liberal pinko commie in the head,
The new target of the knock out game!

SHOCKING: A record high 92 million Americans are not working. Obama is an absolute failure!

Anonymous said...

When did we get to the point where everyone believes that is the job of politicians to "provide" jobs for their constituents?

Andy Berges said...

Whether 5:11 & 5:20 are being genuine or not, the fact is that tens of thousands of Americans with their mindsets actually do exist.

Unfortunately our country is flooded with these unambitious types who live meaningless lives with no purpose whatsoever.

Andy Berges said...

10:29 you are very confused so let me explain.

Nobody is asking politicians to "provide" jobs for their constituents. We are pleading that they stop depleting jobs that their constituents would otherwise be able to apply for...especially Maryland's politicians who continually force successful businesses to flee our state, in addition to them scaring away potential businesses from setting up camp in Maryland.

Anonymous said...

To Andy Berges - You have hit the nail on the head.

I to wish that the politicians would just leave the businesses alone and allow them sprout. It seems as though the politicians just place their 'gun sights' on the businesses and either force them to relocate or go out of business. You can bet your _sss that they have had a hand in this mass exodus of jobs and they are exacerbating the condition as indicated by the national and local job statistics.

It really is not safe for businesses in America anymore. Just like the NAZIs singling out the jews in WWII - our own government has been doing the same with businesses.

Anonymous said...

If you ever try and talk to a politician or a lifelong public administrator they believe that they can create jobs and drive the economy. They truly don't understand free market policy. This has to change. Unfortantly I think it's too late to reverse this

Anonymous said...

once you idiots realize that all the politicians are bought and paid for by corporate, only then will you realize why things are the way they are. Do you honestly think the politicians have your best interests at heart? guess again!
