An Act Of Kindness

Dear Joe:

I wanted to send you the attached note.  It was left on my windshield Saturday while I was shopping across the street from North WalMart.  First, I would like to thank the person who wrote it for taking the time to do a kind gesture.  Second, I want your readers to know that on the same day some one was causing trouble across the street, there was kindness in Salisbury as well.

Bad Driver? In Debt? Proposed NYC Law Would Ban You From Owning A Gun

New York City residents who want to own a gun may soon be denied permits if they are litterbugs, if they are bad drivers, or if they have fallen behind on a few bills.

Under proposed revisions to the police department's handgun, rifle and shotgun permit procedures, the NYPD can reject gun license applicants for a number of reasons, including:

If they have been arrested or convicted of almost any "violation," in any state; having a "poor driving history"; having been fired for "circumstances that demonstrate lack of good judgment"; having "failed to pay legally required debts"; being deemed to lack "good moral character"; or if any other information demonstrates "other good cause for the denial of the permit."

Critics say many of the restrictions are vague, have nothing to do with one's fitness to own a gun and are unconstitutional.

Supporters say the new restrictions will make gun purchasing more efficient and don't give the NYPD any more power than it already has.

Obama / Biden Raises Cash for “Independent” Kratovil

Frank Kratovil wants us rubes across the Bay to think he’s “INDEPENDENT”.  Forget the fact that he votes with Nancy Pelosi almost 90% of the time.  Forget the fact that our energy bills will be rising thanks to his Cap & Tax vote or that many of us will lose our jobs because of it.  No … Frank’s “Independent”.

I guess that’s why the Democrat big guns like Bill Clinton have been raising campaign cash for “Mr. Independent”.  Now we learn that VP Joe Biden will be hosting a fundraiser for Kratovil.  Don’t worry, it’s not over here.  It’s in Bethesda.  I guess “Mr. Independent” figures us rubes wouldn’t find out about it if he held it on the left side of the Bay.

Don’t you love it.  Frank Kratovil doesn’t have time to meet with constituents but has PLENTY of time to hobnob with the lefty glitterati.  He sure does reflect Eastern Shore values.

You Better Keep Good Tabs On Your Vehicles

I just held a conversation with a friend of mine who shared an unreal experience yesterday.

As they were leaving their home they just happened to look across the street where they own a piece of property and store a dump truck. The noticed a strange vehicle on their lot in which they knew something just wasn't right.

They confronted the individual and asked what they thought they were doing. Mind you, the drivers side window had been bashed out of the vehicle and the ignition was all torn apart. The individual said they were towing the vehicle. When they asked who gave them permission to do so the towing company said, a woman called in the complaint to have it removed.

When my friend asked who the woman was the driver pulled out a slip of paper and proceeded to tell my friend that they had purchased the vehicle from this woman for $150.00. My friend said, well, I'm the OWNER of the vehicle, how could this woman sell a vehicle to you that she doesn't own. The driver then pulled out a piece of paper with 5 questions on it.

1. Do you own the vehicle. Answer, NO.
2. Do you have the keys to the vehicle. Answer, NO.
3. Do you have the registration to the vehicle. Answer, NO.
4. Do you have the title to the vehicle. Answer, NO.
5. Do you have permission to sell the vehicle. Answer, YES.

The answer to question #5 was good enough for this towing company to take possession of the vehicle. That is, until the Police were called. To my amazement, the driver was NOT arrested and instead worked out a deal in which he would come back this Thursday to replace the window and ignition switch. Yeah, like that's going to ever happen!

So Folks, you may want to keep your eyes open for your own vehicles as well as your neighbors. We're pretty confident that IF my friends hadn't happened to come across this while it was going on, their vehicle would have been gone for good and probably sold for parts. By the way, this happened right on Camden Ave during broad daylight.

Salisbury has become no different than Harlem or the Bronx in New York City.

Man Voted Straight-Party Ticket And Got Opposite Results

A Craven County, NC voter says he had a near miss at the polls on Thursday when an electronic voting machine completed his straight-party ticket for the opposite of what he intended.

Sam Laughinghouse of New Bern said he pushed the button to vote Republican in all races, but the voting machine screen displayed a ballot with all Democrats checked. He cleared the screen and tried again with the same result, he said. Then he asked for and received help from election staff.

“They pushed it twice and the same thing happened,” Laughinghouse said. “That was four times in a row. The fifth time they pushed it and the Republicans came up and I voted.”

M. Ray Wood, Craven County Board of elections chairman, issued a written statement saying that the elections board is aware of isolated issues and that in each case the voter was able to cast his or her ballot as desired.

Chuck Tyson, chairman of Craven County GOP, remains skeptical. He has been communicating with Wood about the issue and was invited to a meeting Wednesday with state elections officials. There were no further details about that meeting.

“Something is not right here,” Tyson told the Sun Journal. He said he “got two or three calls” from people describing the same problem while they were voting.

“I’ll be matter of fact, I didn’t find that press release satisfactory,” Tyson said, referring to Wood’s written statement.

Tyson reported other problems as well, including long lines waiting for just two voting machines in Havelock, and machines reporting 250 ballots cast where 400 voters had signed in to vote.

Nancy Pelosi Must Defy Odds To Retain Her Post As Speaker

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is arguably facing the longest odds of her storied political career.

Most political analysts believe a Republican tidal wave in the midterm election next Tuesday will sweep away her Speakership along with the Democratic majority.

But people close to Pelosi say she relishes the challenge of having people count her out.

Political observers note that to save her Speakership, Pelosi will not only need a majority but would have to retain at least 225 seats in the Democratic column; that is, limit the Republicans to a pickup of 32 seats.

Pelosi has repeatedly voiced her confidence that Democrats will keep their House majority.

Does she know something others don’t? Or is her optimism no more than pre-election bravado to keep spirits up and save a few seats?

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Now that things are changing quickly in the Frank Kratovil vs. Andy Harris race, all of a sudden we are starting to get Kratovil supporters hammering comments on Salisbury News.

During this entire race, Salisbury News offered to not only interview Frank Kratovil, we had been providing any and all Press Releases from the Kratovil Camp, yet they came to an immediate halt a few months ago.

We're not sure what happened, they simply chose to stop sending them. NOW they want to overwhelm Salisbury News with their comments and attacks against Andy Harris, Homey Don't Play That Game and they should know that.

We dealt with their crap in the past and we chose to absolutely reject their comments then and we'll do the same now. Kratovil supported another local Blog that gets absolutely no hits whatsoever, yet they felt they were getting support and the few visiting that site were getting Frank's message. Well Frank, why isn't that still good enough any more? Why6 are you sending your people here to bash Harris and attack republicans?

I'll tell you why, because they're scared. If they wanted to play fair, send us press releases on a regular basis and even do a candidate interview, fair is fair. However, to come here after refusing to participate with us from the beginning, fagetaboutit!

I called Frank Kratovil a baby two years ago and he has yet to grow up. When I saw him at the Wine Festival he did everything in his powers to flat out ignore my presence. Again, I'm not exactly sure why, since we had openly and fairly provided everything he had sent to us. Again, they stopped sending us information. As a politician, you have to have thick skin. Franks is as sensitive as a frogs.

So to all of you Kratovil supporters trying to use Salisbury News, (once again) to attack Harris, it's NOT going to fly here. Go to the wet pants liberal site where 30 or so people visit per day and spread your word there. Kratovil and his left wing supporters can go pound sand.

Vegas Ballots Come With Harry Checked?

LAS VEGAS -- Some voters in Boulder City said they are concerned about fraud at the electronic ballot box.

Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.

Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

"Something's not right," Ferrara said. "One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong."

Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there is no voter fraud, although the issues do come up because the screens are sensitive.

Seeing Double?

Because we only have so many days left before the general election, yet we have too many candidate interviews still left to be seen, Salisbury News will start to double up each evening and provide two interviews per day, (starting today) for the rest of the week.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of the candidates who took the time out of their very busy schedules to do these interviews and allow all of you the opportunity to listen to their answers on what we felt were the most serious topics facing us on the Eastern Shore.

When we get closer to November 2nd we'll provide all of the interviews to be posted at one time so you can watch them again before you make a final decision. That is, IF you haven't voted already.

We hope this service has helped you better understand what each candidate stands for.

Treasury Contracts Democrat Donors “To Withhold Information From Release To Public”

Officials at the Treasury Department’s Office of Financial Stability (OFS) contracted with a small consulting firm that had given nearly $25,000 to Democratic candidates since 2005  (and no money to Republicans) for “Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Analysts to support the Disclosure Services, Privacy and Treasury Records.”
The firm is currently advertising a job opening for a FOIA analyst with experience in the “Use of FOIA/PA exemptions to withhold information from release to the public”:

Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree

Knowledge of FOIA law with in-depth knowledge of the applications for FOIA/PA exemptions in particular 1,2,4,5,6 and 7c-e
Experience performing FOIA analysis
Reviewing agency records in response to FOIA or PA requests;
Applying the FOIA/PA statutes to requests for agency records;
Use of FOIA/PA exemptions to withhold information from release to the public

Included in the scope of the work is “Redacting or withholding agency records citing appropriate exemptions and generating response letters; and Responding to requestors concerning the agency’s disclosure determination by generating response letters.”

This means that the OFS, which is tasked with overseeing the Troubled Asset Relief Program, has hired a firm which is hiring specifically to withhold information from release to the public.

According to the website of the company, Phacil (pronounced Fa-SEAL), co-founders Rafael Collado and Sascha Mornell were “thanked by President Obama,” and “commended at the White House during National Small Business Week for being selected the SBA New Jersey State Small Business Persons of the Year.”

That Treasury outsourced its mechanism for transparency to a firm with such partisan ties casts new light on a report from Bloomberg News in which Treasury officials have repeatedly obstructed reporters’ requests for information.

NPR CEO Apologizes For Handling Of Williams' Firing

The widespread outrage over the firing of National Public Radio commentator Juan Williams apparently made NPR realize it goofed. The company isn’t asking Williams to come back, and it isn’t apologizing to him for showing him the door. But NPR CEO Vivian Schiller wrote a letter to colleagues Sunday apologizing for how the dismissal was handled, Politico reports.

After the firing, criticism rained down on NPR from all sides — right and left, friend and foe, in the business and outside, political and bipartisan, including promises of congressional investigations because NPR receives public tax dollars.

“I want to apologize for not doing a better job of handling the termination of our relationship with … Williams,” Schiller wrote.

“While we stand firmly behind that decision, I regret that we did not take the time to prepare our program partners and provide you with the tools to cope with the fallout from this episode.”

Frank Kratovil’s October Surprise

What happens when you’re a liberal representing a right-of-center district?  You claim to be “Independent”.  You claim to be voting for “Moderate” or “Conservative” values; even though you voted for the Obama PORKULUS and the job killing Cap & Tax.

What happens when that doesn’t seem to work?  You resort to other types of lies.  If you are Frank Kratovil, your Kronies send out a mailing that pretends to be from the Libertarian candidate attacking your conservative GOP opponent.

It doesn’t matter that it’s a lie.  It doesn’t matter that the Libertarian candidate repudiates your actions.  It only matters that Nancy Pelosi needs your vote in the next Congress.

E-Voting Security Fears Mount As Elections Near

Hackers have already demonstrated the ability to corrupt online voting systems

New technologies allowing voters to cast ballots via the Internet or other electronic means are catching on in the United States and elsewhere, even as fears mount about security of the systems.

A total of 33 states are allowing some e-mail, fax or online ballots in 2010, according to the Verified Voting Foundation, a group that monitors security of election systems.

These systems, which are also used in several other countries, can potentially increase voter participation but security remains a question mark, especially following one spectacular attack on an Internet vote pilot project.

The startling security breach came in September, when a pilot Internet vote system for the city of Washington, D.C., was put online for a test.

A team of computer scientists from the University of Michigan had little trouble infiltrating the system, modifying ballots, changing the password and directing the system to play the university fight song.

"It was extremely easy. Within the first three hours or so of looking at the code we found the first open door and within 36 hours we had taken control of the system," said Alex Halderman, the Michigan professor who led the effort with his students.

To make matters worse, Halderman discovered that other hackers — including from Iran and China — were trying to do the same thing.

Woman Charged After 5 Infant Skeletons Found

Tests reveal that at least four infants were born alive but killed, officials say

A woman who conceived several children through an affair with a man unaware of her pregnancies was charged Monday with homicide after tests on remains found in coolers or encased in concrete showed at least four infants were born alive but killed, authorities said.

Michele Kalina, 44, of Reading, kept the remains in her closet until her husband and daughter found them in July, authorities said Monday.

Kalina, a nurse's aide, also bore a daughter from the same affair in 2003 but gave the baby up for adoption, authorities said. She and her husband have a teenage daughter and had a 13-year-old son who died in 2000 after a long illness.

Republicans Fight To Hold Senate Seat On The Lower Shore

In an election, where the Republican Party hopes to claim enough seats in the Maryland Senate to sustain a filibuster and force negotiations on bills requiring a two-thirds majority, not losing traditionally held seats is as important as gaining them.

That makes the District 38 race on the lower Eastern Shore between Republican hotel executive Michael James and Democratic Del. Jim Mathias such a critical one to both parties.

James and Mathias opposed one another for the District 38B Delegate seat in the 2006 election and Mathias edged James out by 1,113 votes, taking advantage of the Democratic-leaning Wicomico County. Both are vying for the state Senate seat opened by the retirement of Lowell Stoltzfus, the Republican senator who held the post for 18 years.

But since 2006, the normally conservative lower Shore has become a Tea Party stronghold of the kind which overthrew Tom Carper in favor of Christine O’Donnell in neighboring Delaware. The fight between Mathias and James will likely be determined in the place where anger meets self-interest in the voter psyche.

Avoid High Octane Gas To Save Money At The Pump

An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid repeatedly lied to federal immigration and FBI agents and submitted false federal documents to the Department of Homeland Security to cover up her illegal seven-year marriage to a Lebanese national who was the subject of an Oklahoma City Joint Terror Task Force investigation, FoxNews.com has learned.

    Cities Weigh Letting Noncitizens Vote

PORTLAND, Maine -- Like his neighbors, Claude Rwaganje pays taxes on his income and taxes on his cars. His children have gone to Portland's public schools. He's interested in the workings of Maine's largest city, which he has called home for 13 years.

There's one vital difference, though: Rwaganje isn't a U.S. citizen and isn't allowed to vote on those taxes or on school issues. That may soon change.

Portland residents will vote Nov. 2 on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

Noncitizens hold down jobs, pay taxes, own businesses, volunteer in the community and serve in the military, and it's only fair they be allowed to vote, Rwaganje said.

Responding deputies located the Mercury Mountaineer and stopped it on Firetower Road. The vehicle was driven by Ian Gray and his passengers were Allen Michael Ruark and a 17 year old male juvenile. Another deputy checked the area where the occupants were throwing items from the vehicle and located the blue dash light that the victim observed. None of the trio is a law enforcement officer or is authorized to use or possess the blue dash light. Also located in the Mountaineer was a large amount of alcohol.

All three were placed under arrest. Gray and Ruark were transported to the Central Booking Unit where they were processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, Gray and Ruark were both detained by the Commissioner in the Detention Center on bonds of $50,000.00 and $30,000.00 respectively. They advised they could hear the woman screaming for the male subject to stop.

The deputy entered the apartment and located an upset female victim who identified Aaron Greene as her assailant. The deputy also saw injuries on the female that corroborated the accounts of the alleged assault.
The deputy placed Green under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Greene in the Detention Center in lieu of $20,000.00 bond.

During the investigation, the deputy identified a suspect vehicle which was subsequently located in the 100 block of Overlook Drive in Salisbury. While speaking with the owner of the vehicle, Joshua Whayland, he admitted to being the operator of the vehicle and that he was responsible for the damage to the field. Whayland also admitted that he did this while under the influence of alcohol.

The deputy placed Whayland under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner released Whayland on Personal Recognizance.

Narrative: On 22 October 2010 at 2:45 PM, a deputy was behind a vehicle operated by Kenneth Tang on N. Salisbury Blvd at Naylor Mill Road when the deputy ran the tag on Tang’s vehicle. The registration check revealed the tag had expired in August 2010, but the deputy observed that the tag displayed a validation tab of 2012. Upon stopping Tang, he admitted to the deputy that the tags were no good and that he didn’t have a driver’s license. The deputy subsequently confirmed that the registration had been suspended due to an insurance violation and that the driver was revoked. Upon being placed under arrest, the deputy discovered a pipe containing crack cocaine was on the passenger seat.

The deputy learned from Tang that he had stolen the validation tab from a vehicle at his place of employment.

Narrative: On 24 September 2010, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office investigated the theft of jewelry from three different residences in Wicomico County in the 5400 block of Kingsmill Drive, 3900 block of Coulbourn Mill Road and the 30500 block of Foxchase Drive. The total estimated value of the stolen jewelry from these three residences is over $23,000.00. During the investigation, the deputy discovered that the common denominator in these cases was a shared residential cleaning company. Further investigation revealed that the same employee of the cleaning company was present at all three of these residences where jewelry was stolen. The focus of the investigation quickly focused on this employee, identified as Traci Brooks Sterling.

The investigating deputy visited pawn shops in Salisbury and discovered that this employee had pawned jewelry on numerous occasions that coincided with these thefts. After identifying the items pawned, the deputy positively identified them as the stolen pieces of jewelry. It became clear that this employee, Traci Sterling was culpable in these thefts.

The deputy applied for and received a warrant from the District Court Commissioner charging Sterling with felony theft from these three residences. Sterling was arrested on 22 October 2010 and transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center where she remains held on $15,000.00 bond.

It should be noted that the cleaning company that employed Sterling is not believed to be complicit in these thefts.

State's Scenic Byways Program Gets A Facelift

DelDOT Unveils Updated Web Site, Logo, and Brochure

Camden -- The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) joined other local, state, and federal officials, as well as members of the public to celebrate the unveiling of the newly updated Delaware Byways Program. The event was held at Brecknock Park in Camden, the site of an historic family farm originally owned by Thomas Howell, whose house still stands on the property, and location along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, one of the six designated byways found in the state.

"Today is a historic moment, much like the byways that we are celebrating," said Transportation Secretary Carolann Wicks. "These byways enable the places that help to tell the story of our state to be known and enjoyed, not just driven by and forgotten."

The cornerstone of the Delaware Byways Program is the collaboration that exists between citizens and the local, state, and federal government. The program is administered under the guidance of the Delaware Byways Advisory Board, which includes representatives of other state agencies, historic preservation and environmental advocacy groups, county government, and the real estate industry.

DelDOT was authorized to develop and manage what was originally called the Delaware Scenic and Historic Highways Program following the passage of Senate Bill 320 by the General Assembly during the 2000 Legislative Session. In June 2010, the program was officially renamed Delaware Byways Program by virtue of Senate Bill 210, which was sponsored by State Senator David McBride and Representative Deborah Hudson.

The purpose of the program is to provide recognition to Delaware roads possessing certain intrinsic qualities that create a special visual experience to people traveling the road. Each of the six byways in Delaware highlights the special features found lining them. A fact that is evident when you read their names: Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway, Red Clay Valley Byway, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, Route 9 Coastal Heritage Byway, Lewes Byway, and Western Sussex Byway.

The new logo, brochure, and Web site that the program now boasts will make information about the byways more noticeable and accessible for residents and travelers. "These tools," said Wicks, "will enable those who have been traversing our state for years or who may be visiting for the first time, to enjoy the history, beauty, and culture that our state has to offer."

    An Atheist In The Woods

An  atheist was walking through the woods.

    'What majestic  trees!'
    'What powerful rivers!'
    'What beautiful  animals!'
    He said to himself.

As he was walking  alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind  him.

He turned to look.  He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

He  ran as fast as he could up the path.  He looked over his  shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on  him.

He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear  was even closer.

He tripped & fell on the  ground.

He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that  the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw  & raising his right paw to strike him.

At  that instant moment, the Atheist cried out:
    'Oh my God!'
    Time  stopped.
    The bear froze.
    The forest was silent.

As  a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the  sky.

'You deny my existence for all these years, teach others  I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.'
'Do  you expect me to help you out of this predicament?'

'Am I to  count you as a believer?'

The atheist looked directly into  the light, and said: ! 'It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask  you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the  BEAR a Christian?'

    'Very well', said the  voice.

The light went out.  The sounds of the forest  resumed.  And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws  together, bowed his head & spoke:

'Lord  bless this food, which I am about to receive from Thy bounty through  Christ our Lord, Amen.

Baltimore Sun Poll: Race Is Tied!

I wanted to take a second to update you on the latest news from the campaign trail.  Andy has been traveling relentlessly, talking to the voters of Maryland's First District and spreading his message of common sense conservative solutions to the problems Marylanders face.  It's clear that voters have had enough of the Obama/Pelosi/Kratovil agenda and are ready for Andy's leadership in Washington, D.C.

I also wanted to alert you to a new Baltimore Sun field poll that shows this race tied up, with only a week to go to election day.  We are at a crucial point in this election, and we need everyone who supports Andy to get involved.  Below, we have listed the three most important things you co do to help.
Also, it's important that you tell your friends why you're supporting Andy Harris for Congress.  Talk to your neighbors, friends at work and at church.  Urge them to vote and urge them to vote for Andy Harris.

Thank you for everything you do for this campaign.

    Bill Lattanzi
Campaign Manager, Andy Harris for Congress

Please Vote Melissa For Orphans' Court

    Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Family,
This is a shameless request for your vote and your help.  I would be ever so appreciative if you would pass this on to your email list of people who are Wicomico County voters.  If you don't care to do that, or can't because of your job, don't worry, I'll never know, and I wouldn't hold it against you if I did.  If you have time or inclination to read, there is information below.  If not, the salient point is, "Please vote for Melissa Pollitt Bright for Orphans' Court Judge!"
As most of you know, I am up for reelection to the Orphans' Court for Wicomico County.  The Orphans' Court is the one court that most people will have some interaction with at some point in their lives, but yet it is the court that most people know nothing about.  It shows up on the ballot every four years, but is seldom thought about between times.
The Orphans' Court in Maryland is the probate court.  Our job is to oversee the administration of people's estates.  When someone dies, if they have a Will, the Orphans' Court makes sure it is followed and enforced.  If there is no Will, this is the court that protects the rights of the heirs.  We also protect the rights of creditors.  If there are disputes regarding the estate, those come before the Orphans' Court to be settled.  The commissions and fees payable to Personal Representatives and attorneys are also overseen by the Orphans' Court.
Although the Orphans' Court does oversee and safeguard property and inheritances of minor children until they reach legal age, the name of the court is a bit misleading.  It comes from the City of London's Court for Widows and Orphans, established in the 1600s.  In those days, if your father died, you were legally an orphan (women had few rights on their own, so Mom didn't count).  The court was established to protect the inheritance rights of children whose fathers had died.  This system was brought to the Colony of Maryland and the Orphans' Court was established in Maryland's first Constitution following the Revolution.  We do not handle adoption or custody issues.
I have been on the Orphans' Court in Wicomico County for 16 years.  During that time, I have taken every available opportunity to improve my knowledge, and thereby my service.  I have received training through the Maryland Judicial Institute, the National Probate College, the National Judiciary College, and through programs provided by the Maryland Association of the Judges of the Orphans' Court (MAJOC).  I have also spent a great deal of time on independent research, reading case law and court records.
During my time on the court, I have served two terms as President of MAJOC, was appointed to the first Conference of Orphans' Court Judges (an advisory board to the Maryland Judiciary) and reappointed to the third Conference, and have been for several years one of two official State Representatives from Maryland to the National College of Probate Judges.  I also meet regularly with a committee composed of Orphans' Court judges, Registers of Wills, members of the Estates and Trusts section of the Maryland Bar, and an Assistant Attorney General.  This committee is the driving force behind much of the legislation which affects the probate process.
On a personal level, I am a lifelong resident of Allen, in southwestern Wicomico County.  I am active in my church, the Fire Co. Auxillary, and the Allen Historical Society.  I am also the publisher of Maggie Magazine.  I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 34 years; we have an amazing daughter, a wonderful son-in-law, and a grandson who will no doubt change the world!
I love my work on the court and hope to be returned to continue that work.  But I need your help to get there.  In next Tuesday's General Election, there are four candidates for three seats on the Orphans' Court for Wicomico County.  You may vote for up to three.  Please make one of your votes for Melissa Pollitt Bright.
Thank you very much, for reading this, and for passing it on if you feel so inclined.  As our late Comptroller, Louis L. Goldstein used to say, "God bless y'all real good!"
    With love and appreciation,
    Melissa

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE CHOICE HOTELS PLANS NEW ROCKVILLE HQ

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 25, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and City of Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio today announced that Choice Hotels International (NYSE:CHH), one of the world’s largest lodging companies currently headquartered in Silver Spring, today signed a letter of intent with the State, County and City to move its headquarters to Rockville when its current lease expires in 2013.

Since mid-2008, the company has been looking for a new headquarters of 130,000 square feet or more in the Capital Region to accommodate a growing number of employees and is in negotiations to lease office space in Rockville Town Center. Once at their new location, the company plans to add 75 new employees, adding to its current base of approximately 400 employees in Maryland. Also under consideration is a Cambria Suites hotel near the proposed headquarters site to accommodate an estimated 10,000 stays per year generated by employee and franchisee training programs, as well as other community, vendor and hotel developer events.

“Choice Hotels’ decision to continue to invest and create new jobs in Maryland is a great win for the State and for Montgomery County,” said Governor O’Malley. “We know that in today’s global economy, companies have many location choices and we are pleased that we can offer Choice Hotels the kind of highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce, strategic location and outstanding quality of life that will enable the company to continue to grow here for years to come.”

“Over the past two years, we’ve conducted extensive site reviews and considered a number of locations for our new headquarters that will continue to provide our employees with a great working environment. Paramount in our decision was to identify a location convenient to where the vast majority of our employees currently live and which provides easy access to public transportation, as well as shops and services,” said Stephen P. Joyce, president and CEO of Choice Hotels.  “Additionally, we are pleased with the support shown to us by the State of Maryland, Montgomery County and the City of Rockville for Choice Hotels to remain in Maryland just 10 miles from our current home.”

“Choice Hotels International has been one of Montgomery County’s leading corporate citizens for the past forty years, so we are thrilled they continue to see the competitive business advantage a Montgomery County, Maryland location brings them,” said County Executive Leggett. “We value every business in Montgomery County, but it is industry-leaders like Choice, who consistently create high-quality jobs, attract highly-skilled employees and display a true connection to their community, that are truly a vital component of our business community. We are grateful Choice will continue to call us home for many more years to come.”

“Rockville Town Center is the ideal location for Choice’s headquarters,” said Mayor Marcuccio. “Choice Hotels will benefit from and contribute to the growing vitality and vibrancy of Rockville’s downtown. The City is thrilled with the company’s desire to relocate here, and welcomes Choice with open arms.”

To help retain Choice Hotels in Maryland, and assist the company with its relocation, the State, County and City are providing $4.3 million in conditional loans and grants that are contingent upon job creation at the new headquarters. In addition, the company is eligible for State, County and City tax credits, including the County’s New Jobs Tax Credit, and could also receive Tax-Exempt Recovery Zone Facility Bonds.

The Choice announcement comes on the heels of other successful Montgomery County company openings, expansions and attractions this year, including Zynegnia, Inc.’s new 14,000-square-foot headquarters in Gaithersburg, Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s $75 million expansion of its world headquarters and conference center in Chevy Chase, expansion of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission into a new 362,000-square-foot building in North Bethesda, the National Cancer Institute’s new 575,000-square-foot, $200 million satellite campus at the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center in Rockville, QIAGEN’s 117,000-square-foot, $52 million North American headquarters and manufacturing facility expansion in Germantown, EDF Inc.’s new 16,000-square-foot North American headquarters in Chevy Chase, and International Baccalaureate’s new 36,000-square-foot Americas Global Center headquarters in Bethesda.

In the past year, the O’Malley-Brown Administration has implemented an aggressive agenda of new and expanded programs to create jobs, retain jobs and improve the conditions that allow businesses large and small to create and save jobs, including:

    ·         Pioneering the Jobs Creation and Recovery Tax Credit;
    ·         Expanding the Small Business Loan Guaranty program to increase access to credit; and
    ·         Creating InvestMaryland, an administrative and legislative proposal designed to support the growth of the state’s knowledge based industries by stimulating investment in the Maryland Venture Fund.

Ehrlich Outlines Immediate Priorities For Maryland

Ehrlich: “Strong Leadership” Needed To Change Direction in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS – Bob Ehrlich today outlined four bold actions he will take immediately after taking office in order to restore Maryland’s economy and rein in government excess. These actions are in direct conflict with Martin O’Malley’s agenda to spend money that doesn’t exist, raise taxes on families yet again, and force Washington’s costly mandates on individual Marylanders.

“Serious times require strong leadership,” Ehrlich said.  “This election is far from over but with unemployment doubled and massive deficits created by Martin O’Malley, Marylanders deserve to know their next Governor will hit the ground running.  On Day One, my Administration will put an end to the era of blank check spending, jumpstart the economy, lower taxes, and take on Washington’s health care mess.”

Jump Start the Economy:  Ehrlich will announce members of the “Recovery Maryland” team, a bipartisan panel of entrepreneurs charged with identifying barriers to job creation in state government.  The Recovery Maryland team will report back to Ehrlich in 90 days with findings.  Those regulations deemed most detrimental to job creation will be dismantled.

Lower Taxes on Families & Entrepreneurs:  Ehrlich will introduce legislation to repeal O’Malley’s 20 percent increase in the sales tax to spur economic activity and to lessen the tax burden on low and middle income Marylanders. The Democratic Governors Association, which Martin O’Malley vice-chairs, admitted last week that sales tax increases “hurt those who have the least.”  Bob Ehrlich agrees and that’s why he’s seeking an immediate repeal.

Say “No” to What We Can’t Afford:  Bob Ehrlich will order government contractors to cease all work on the unaffordable Purple Line & Baltimore Red Line and redirect the funds into local transportation projects across the state.  This directive will save $300 million in engineering over the next several years.  Ehrlich will also instruct his Department of Transportation to pursue a cost effective, rapid-bus alternative to the Purple Line and work with Baltimore transit advocates to identify service alternatives to the Red Line.

Take On Washington’s Health Care Mess:  The Ehrlich Administration will seek to exempt Maryland from Washington’s health care mandate, which unconstitutionally forces Marylanders to buy care, rations health care for families, hurts small businesses, and drives up costs for state government.
