Salvation Army Mobilizing Resources To Aid With Haiti Relief
Salisbury, MD (January 14, 2010) – Just as the world is reacting to the horrific tragedy in Haiti, local residents have been calling the Salisbury Corps of The Salvation Army asking how they can be of help.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti at this time and especially our Salvation Army officers and employees throughout Haiti,” said Captain Cameron Henderson, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army in Salisbury.
According to Henderson, who has been in touch with fellow officers serving in Haiti, “words cannot describe the devastation that has taken place in and around Port au Prince”.
The Salvation Army has had a presence in Haiti since 1950 and currently operates schools, clinics, a hospital, feeding programs, children's homes and church-related activities spread across two major facilities in Port au Prince, close to the epicenter of the earthquake and at other locations in the country.
One of the facilities, or compounds as it is referred to, includes a home for more than 50 children; a school with a daily attendance of 1,500 children; a medical clinic caring for 150-200 people daily; and a church that on any typical Sunday welcomes nearly 1,000 people. The facility is less than 10 minutes from the National Palace and is in an area known as St. Martin that’s home to predominantly poor living in the nation’s capital.
The second compound that houses Salvation Army administrative offices is being used as an emergency operations center; damage was slight to this compound, according to Salvation Army reports from Haiti. The Salvation Army hospital in Fond-des-Negres (75 miles west of Port-au-Prince) reports some minor damage, but no injuries.
"Corps Officers in Port au Prince report no one in the compound was injured during the earthquake, but the children’s home, the clinic and church suffered major damage,” said Henderson. “Several smaller buildings, including residences, have collapsed completely. People were sleeping in the parking lot overnight, while severe aftershocks continued to affect the country.”
The Salvation Army is mobilizing resources and personnel to assist with the international relief effort in Haiti following the severe earthquake Tuesday.
The Salvation Army’s World Services Office, based in Alexandria, VA, is prepared to commit more financial resources, as well as food, water and other emergency supplies, to assist in the recovery.
The organization is preparing to send more than 44,000 lbs of pre-packaged emergency rations to the country, along with emergency disaster teams. The Salvation Army is working with other agencies to identify appropriate transportation for the food. As with all such relief efforts, The Salvation Army will be a part of the initial emergency response while assessing longer term needs of the residents.
“Right now, the best thing that local organizations and individuals who wish to help can do is to donate money,” said Henderson. More Misery For This Feeble Country - Haiti Already Struggling With Corruption, Poverty
Even before Haiti's worst earthquake in more than a century caused untold damage and devastated the nation's already-fragile economy, Haiti held the dubious distinctions of being the Western Hemisphere's most impoverished and corruption-ridden country, a combination of circumstances that tended to reinforce each other.
That history now overshadows Haiti's future, as the United States and its partners mobilize an international relief mission to help the country recover and rebuild from Tuesday's earthquake.
"On the edge of despair before the earthquake, Haiti has now fallen into the abyss," said James Roberts, a research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation who served as economic counsel at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti in 2006 and 2007.
Haiti "began with a very shaky start and has had a very destabilizing history ever since," Mr. Roberts said.
Weak government institutions and a culture of corruption, he said, have combined to prevent the country from achieving sustained economic development.
The roots of the country's woes run deep.
In 1804, Haiti became the world's first black republic to declare its independence, after a rebellion by impoverished slaves defeated their French colonial masters. Haiti is the hemisphere's second-oldest independent country.
For generations, however, the vast majority of Haitians have led grim economic lives. An estimated 80 percent of Haiti's 9 million people live below the poverty line, and more than half live in abject poverty.
With a gross domestic product of about $7 billion, the per-capita GDP is less than $800 per year, or barely $2 per day. In addition to widespread unemployment, more than two-thirds of the labor force do not have formal jobs.

House Panel Rejects Panther Resolution
The Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday rejected by a 15-14 vote a resolution of inquiry that would have forced the Justice Department to tell Congress why it dismissed a civil complaint against members of the New Black Panther Party who disrupted a Philadelphia polling place in the November 2008 election.
The party-line vote had been sought by Rep. Frank R. Wolf, Virginia Republican, who, along with Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said they have been unable to get information from the department on the complaint's dismissal.
"I am deeply disappointed that the Judiciary Committee defeated my resolution of inquiry on a party-line vote. There has been no oversight, no accountability and certainly no transparency with regard to this attorney general and this Department of Justice," Mr. Wolf said.
"Where is the 'unprecedented transparency' that this administration promised? Where is the honesty and openness that the majority party pledged? The American people deserve better," he said.
The 15 Democrats, led by Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, sent the resolution to the House floor with an adverse recommendation, voting it "unfavorably" out of committee. They described the Philadelphia polling disruption as an "isolated incident" that received sufficient punishment when the New Black Panther Party member who carried a nightstick was barred from carrying weapons at polling places in the future.

A big reason why the government is inefficient and ineffective is because Washington has outdated technology, with federal workers having better computers at home than in the office.
This startling admission came Thursday from Peter Orszag, who manages the federal bureaucracy for President Barack Obama.
The public is getting a bad return on its tax dollars because government workers are operating with outdated technologies, Orszag said in a statement that kicked off a summit between Obama and dozens of corporate CEOs.
The White House release that included Orszag’s comments said one “specific source” of ineffective and inefficient government is the huge technology gap between the public and private sectors that results in billions of dollars in waste, slow and inadequate customer service and a lack of transparency about how dollars are spent.
(And, of course, the computers are left over from the BUSH administration, so it's really his fault, no?)

Obama's Regulatory Czar, Cass Sunstein: Ban "Conspiracy Theorizing
In a lengthy academic paper, President Obama's regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein, argued the U.S. government should ban "conspiracy theorizing."
Among the beliefs Sunstein would ban is advocating that the theory of global warming is a deliberate fraud.
Sunstein also recommended the government send agents to infiltrate "extremists who supply conspiracy theories" to disrupt the efforts of the "extremists" to propagate their theories.
Sunstein: "We suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of believers by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity."
Sunstein said government agents "might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action."
They might also post comments on blog sites.

Unruly Bar Patron Injures Trooper
Location: Buffalo Wild Wings, 2062 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware
Date of Occurrence: Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 at 6:07 p.m.
Suspect(s): Jennifer Holmwood, 26, of Wilmington, Delaware
Resume: At about 6:00 p.m. last evening, State Police dispatch, RECOM, received a call for service from Buffalo Wild Wings on Limestone Road requesting Troopers respond to help remove an intoxicated female who was being unruly with the staff.
Officers arrived on the scene and contacted the subject in question- Jennifer Holmwood. She was using profanity and being disorderly. Officers initially tried to have Holmwood leave peacefully, however, she became irate.
A Trooper started to simply escort Holmwood out of the business and she slapped his hand away from her. He then attempted to take Jennifer into custody and she started to violently resist. The Trooper and Holmwood fell to the ground and during the struggle both were injured.
The Trooper was treated at Christiana Hospital for injuries to his writs. Holmwood was treated at Christiana Hospital for a contusion to her face.
Ms. Holmwood was eventually transported back to Troop 6 for processing. She was formally charged with Felony Resisting Arrest, Felony Assault on a Police Officer, Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief and Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct. She was arraigned and released on a $2,200.00 unsecured bond.

Incident: Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute
Date of Incident: 7 January 2010
Location: Lee Street, Salisbury, MD
Suspect: Gregory D. Snead, 39, Fruitland, MD
Narrative: On 7 January 2010 at 9:13 AM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle operated by Gregory Snead of Fruitland MD. During the encounter, a WCSO drug K9 scanned Snead’s vehicle for the presence of the odor of illegal drugs. After the K9 alerted to that odor, a deputy began to search both Snead and his vehicle. During the search, a substantial sized baggie fell from inside Snead’s shorts. Inside the baggie was what the deputy recognized as marijuana. Based on the amount of marijuana seized, it appeared destined for distribution by Snead.
The deputy transported Snead to the Central Booking Unit post arrest where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, the Commissioner detained Snead in the Detention Center in lieu of $60,000.00 bond.

Location: Ocean Hwy. at Foskey Lane, Delmar, MD
Suspect: Thomas W. Miles, 20, Salisbury, MD
Narrative: On 11 January 2010 at 7:36 PM, a deputy from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle operated by Thomas Miles of Salisbury for speeding. Upon contacting Miles, the deputy detected that Miles appeared extremely nervous at being stopped. Based on Miles extreme nervousness, a WCSO Drug K9 team arrived and scanned the vehicle for the presence of the odor of illegal drugs. During the search, the K9 alerted positively which caused the deputy to search Miles’ vehicle. During the search, the deputy located a substantial sized baggie containing marijuana in the glove compartment. Based on the amount seized, it appeared more than what one individual would consume and therefore seemed destined for distribution.
The deputy placed miles under arrest and transported him to the Central Booking Unit where he was processed and taken in front of the District Court Commissioner. After an initial appearance, Miles was released on personal recognizance by the Commissioner.
