Wicomico Republican Superbowl Headquarters

There's no denying the fact that the republican party won the Superbowl of elections last night across the country but Wicomico County Republican Headquarters was the place to be.

As the numbers came in it felt like a roller coaster ride the entire time. The only person we could confidently say was going to be a winner was Matt Maciarello. Well, that's not exactly true. Stevie Prettyman was pretty much a shoe in and her numbers proved such.

I'm going to get into more details some time later this morning. It was a late night for me and an early rise this morning, hence the slow start today.

I'll be back with much more very soon.

Power To The People!

Nothing short of a revolution. That's the only way to describe the public upheaval that took place yesterday.

Nancy Pelosi has been fired, the Senate is far more balanced and President Obama was resoundingly rebuked. Republican governors could control upwards of 30 statehouses when the smoke clears. That's what you call a consequential election.

As predicted, the explosion of government cost and the economic slump were the driving factors for voters. The results immediately reinvigorate the checks and balances inherent in the two-party system and bring a needed dose of fiscal sanity to Washington and the states.

Yet those are only the most obvious outcomes. The real meaning of yesterday is much more profound.

Let me put it this way: With apologies to Michelle Obama, I've never been more proud of my country. Millions of ordinary Americans rebuffed the harangues and lectures of their supposed betters and dared to take the future into their own hands.

MICHAEL REAGAN: My Dad, Ronald Reagan, Warned Us About National Health Care

Now that the elections are over the real work begins. My father, Ronald Reagan, warned us decades ago about “socialized medicine”. His words are as true today as they were in 1964.

If given the chance, he said then, the American people would reject a government take over of medicine and, by nearly every poll result, we did.

But Congress and the White House ran right over the will of the American people and enacted a takeover of a huge segment of our private economy. This is not the America directed by its citizens upon which our nation was founded. Instead, we have been misled, bamboozled and treated with utter contempt by elected officials drunk on power. Even faithful representation has been ignored:

- We were promised the health care act would not increase private insurance premiums or taxes but premium increases have already begun and new taxes are on the way.

- We were promised that senior citizens would not be harmed but with $500 billion in cuts to Medicare (to achieve patently phony “savings”), that cannot be true either and the elderly know it and now fear the future.

- It was promised that this legislation would finally control escalating health care costs but we got the opposite of cost controls. Without such controls, Congress has engineered increased demand against a finite supply of doctors and hospitals—a virtual guarantee that both the national debt and household bills will skyrocket.

Republicans Take Control Of House

Multisource political news, world news, and entertainment news analysis by Newsy.com
Republicans are celebrating a return to power in the House of Representatives.

Voters Toss Kratovil In Md.'s First District, Elect Harris

BALTIMORE (AP) - Republican Andy Harris defeated freshman Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil on Tuesday with promises of a conservative approach to restoring America's economic vigor.

Beaming at chants of "USA! USA!" the conservative state senator told supporters at a Kent Island crab house that lower taxes and smaller government were the keys to job creation.

"We're going to make sure that America remains a land of opportunity," said Harris, an obstetric anesthesiologist who teaches at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Harris had 54 percent of the vote to Kratovil's 42 percent.

Libertarian Richard Davis got 4 percent in a rematch of the 2008 election for all three candidates.

Harris will represent Maryland's 1st Congressional District, which includes the Eastern Shore and parts of the counties of Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford.

Republicans Ride Voter Unrest To Control Of House

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans reaped a windfall from independent voters and tea party activists to seize control of the House in midterm elections, gained seats in the Senate and served notice Wednesday they will confront President Barack Obama with a conservative agenda to cut government and spur private-sector jobs.

"We've been given a second chance and a golden opportunity," Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, No. 2 Republican in the House, said as his party prepared to usher in an era of divided government. He called the outcome a rejection of Obama more than an endorsement of the GOP, cautioning fellow Republicans they must to work to win public confidence.

"People want to see results," he said on CBS's "The Early Show." "They want to see the government go on a diet just like they have."

Republicans scored the biggest party turnover in more than 70 years Tuesday with their win in the House and, in doing so, will dethrone Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi _ a prime target of their campaign _ who had crashed a political glass ceiling and made history with her elevation to speaker four years ago.
Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, overcame a tea party challenge from Republican Sharron Angle in one of the election's most brutally fought races.

For Bob Ehrlich, ‘This Closes A Chapter In Our Life’

On the jumbo TV screen in the Exhibition Hall of the Timonium Fairgrounds Tuesday night, with the sound on mute, a clearly exuberant Gov. Martin O’Malley gave his victory speech as the crowd watched mostly silent and unbelieving.

Throughout the evening, as one news organization after another declared the incumbent Democrat the victor, members of Bob Ehrlich’s camp still believed he could somehow pull it out.  Told the disheartening news by a reporter, Ziggy Cirigliano, who for years had driven around in his pick-up truck with a huge “Bring Ehrlich Back” sign, said the numbers from Baltimore County had yet to come in. The reporter checked his laptop computer and gave him the bad news. Ehrlich and O’Malley were running neck and neck in Baltimore County, the home county where the former Republican governor needed at least 60% of the vote.

Who Got Stimulated?

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party. They controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For FY 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period:    (below)
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets.  That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.

In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

Andy Harris Wins Congressional Seat In A Landslide

GRASONVILLE, Md. – Andy Harris yesterday won the Congressional seat for Maryland’s First District with 55 percent of the vote, in a decided landslide.

“Tonight is proof that Maryland and America are ready to bring fiscal responsibility back to Washington,” said Andy Harris. “I can’t thank my family, supporters, and staff enough for making this win possible. I find it a privilege to serve in the 112th Congress, and I’m honored to celebrate this moment with my friends and family. I’m excited to get to Washington, roll up my sleeves, and start representing Maryland’s First District.”

“I want to thank Frank Kratovil for devoting his last two years to serving the First District and for running a hard-fought race,” said Harris.

Harris celebrated his victory at Harris Crab House on Kent Narrows with family, friends, and supporters.

Andy Harris is the Congressman-Elect for Maryland’s First Congressional District.  Harris, a practicing physician, and his wife Cookie have five children.

MDGOP Statement On The Harris Win

Maryland Republican Party Chairman Audrey Scott released the following statement on Dr. Andy Harris’ victory:
“I want to congratulate Andy Harris for running a successful campaign to return the First Congressional District back to the GOP. First District residents spoke loud and clear, rejecting the tax-and-spend policies of Congressional Democrats by electing Andy Harris as their next congressman.
“I’m thrilled the Maryland Republican Party could do our part to ensure Republicans would take back the United States House of Representatives. Our unprecedented get-out-the-vote effort in the district combined with Andy Harris’ strong leadership and commonsense solutions bucked the Maryland Democrat Machine to send another Maryland Republican to Washington. On this historic Election Day for Republicans nationwide, I’m proud that Maryland Republicans could do our part to return checks and balances to Capitol Hill by electing Andy Harris and reelecting Roscoe Bartlett.

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O'MALLEY ON ELECTION RESULT

Baltimore, MD -- Following last night's election result, Governor Martin O'Malley issued the following statement:

"I am humbled by the strong showing of support from people from across Maryland.  Maryland voters tonight sent a clear and decisive message: they want to move forward, not back.  These past four years have not been easy for Maryland families, but together we have made the tough but necessary decisions to cut state spending in the face of a devastating national recession while protecting core priorities like job creation, public education funding, a four-year college tuition freeze, and public safety.  Marylanders know it is not by accident, but by choice that Maryland is weathering the storm better than our neighbors and stands poised to emerge stronger than before.  Tonight Maryland took a step forward.
"This campaign belongs to the thousands of Marylanders who made phone calls, knocked on doors, and talked to their neighbors about moving our great state forward."

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement on the Maryland election results:

“Tonight, Maryland voters sent a clear message to President Obama by electing Republican Andy Harris as their next Congressman from Maryland’s First District.  This critical victory for our Party shows clearly that Marylanders have rejected the reckless tax, borrow and spend agenda of President Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.  Andy Harris provides strong Republican leadership for Maryland and will fight for job creation and common sense, pro-growth policies.

“I would like to congratulate all of our Republican candidates on their successful campaigns, as well as recognize the hard work of the Maryland Republican Party and our grassroots activists across the state that helped make these critical Republican victories possible. In addition, I want to thank former governor Bob Ehrlich and his running mate, Mary Kane, for a strong campaign effort and for their leadership and commitment to the state of Maryland.  It is time for our nation and Maryland to get back to work and tonight the voters chose to do just that by electing Republican leaders such as Andy Harris.”

STATEMENT FROM MARYLAND DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR SUSAN TURNBULL ON LAST NIGHT'S ELECTION RESULTS

Annapolis, MD -- The Maryland Democratic Party tonight released the following statement following tonight's election results:

“Today, voters in Maryland sent a very important message: We want to keep moving Maryland forward with Democratic leadership.

The re-election of Maryland’s Democratic team highlights the values that Marylanders hold dear: We want leadership that will make getting a quality and affordable education a reality for every child, we want leadership committed to creating, saving and maintaining jobs in Maryland, not outsourcing them to other countries, we want leadership committed to making healthcare more affordable and accessible for our families, and we want leadership committed to Moving Maryland Forward by putting the people’s interests above those of special interests.

As we celebrate tonight’s victory we want to thank each and every person who helped us by canvassing, phone-banking, putting up yard signs, and working at the polls. These volunteers have been a critical part of tonight’s success and we know that we would not be celebrating tonight if not for them.

Tonight, as we look forward to continued leadership from Senator Barbara Mikulski, Governor Martin O’Malley, Lieutenant Governor Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler, Comptroller Peter Franchot, Congressman Steny Hoyer, Congressman Elijah Cummings, Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, Congressman John Sarbanes and Congresswoman Donna Edwards and the rest of Team Maryland, we remember that there is still a great deal of work to do. With Democrats in office in our state we know that we will continue to Move Maryland Forward.”
