The expansion of pre-K has already been a prominent issue in a busy Maryland political year playing out in the backdrop of the session. All 188 seats in the Maryland General Assembly are up for election in November, as well as statewide offices such as governor and attorney general. O’Malley, who cannot run for a third term, said both he and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who is running for the Democratic nomination for governor, will outline plans on expanding pre-K.

Long term, meaning by second or third grade, any head start gained by pre-K or similar programs is gone. It's like giving a non-runner a lead in a race and expecting them to sustain it.

Schools are overcrowded now. Where will we put these kids?
Why not just pick the babies up at the hospital as soon as they're born and let the rest of us raise them?
