Helping Those In Need

With two snow storms hitting the Eastern Shore, many elderly and handicapped people have not been able to get out of their homes. Many have also not been able to get to the stores to get prescriptions and groceries.

I have received two messages from individuals willing to volunteer their time to help shovel and transport people in Delmar, Salisbury & Fruitland tomorrow.

If you need help, if you know of someone who needs help, please e-mail me at alberobutzo@wmconnect.com or call me at 410-430-5349 and we will get someone out to you as soon as possible. Be sure to leave your name, phone number and address.

If you would like to volunteer your services, please e-mail me, do not call. I can keep better track of the e-mail that way.

Lets help those in need right now and make their lives that much better. Thanks Everyone! Joe

Latest Road Conditions In Wicomico County

I just received a call from Wicomico County Roads. Here is the latest update on Rockawalkin Road.

Rockawalkin, from Crooked Oak to Nanticoke Road is now open.

They have ONE lane open from Nanticoke to Levin Dashiell Rd.

Rockawalkin from Levin Dashiell Road to Rt. 50 they are still working on right now.

As for Spring Hill Road/Lane, they are out there right now working on that road as well.

Folks, they are doing the best that they can to get things improved. When and IF you call them, try to remember the person answering the phone is NOT the person out there clearing the roads. Be kind and ask your questions but do not be rude.

Salisbury News is your go to place for the latest updates and information.

Waterworks To The Rescue

Waterworks, (443-497-1533) not only came to my home late last night to clear my driveway, they also rescued this vehicle today stranded in Wicomico County.

Acts of kindness have become a welcomed tradition here on the Eastern Shore, neighbors taking care of neighbors, strangers taking care of strangers. I sure am liking the direction things are headed in these days.

I'd like to ask one more favor of everyone. I'd like to start by asking those of you with 4x4 vehicles to help the elderly get to the store. Many have been stranded for a week now and could really use some basics around the house. If you'd like to volunteer, please comment with your name and number and perhaps let those who are willing to make contact with you do so.

Now, if there's anyone else who needs a pathway cleared on their property you can e-mail me at alberobutzo@wmconnect.com. Remember, this is for the elderly, (over 65) and the handicapped.

I'll do my best to get out your way over the weekend to clear you out. Mind you Folks, yesterday we came upon one home with two brand new Mercedes and a new Cadillac in the driveway. We're offering this service to those of you who can't afford to get cleared out. This is quite the chore, especially as wet as this snow has become. So please, don't ask us to come out there if you really don't NEED this service. For everyone else we have provided a list on the bottom right hand side of companies for hire. Thanks for understanding.

What Roads Are Closed That You Know Of

I know Holt Road is now closed. Spring Hill Road on the Maryland side was closed. Let's get a list of roads that YOU know are closed and help everyone out.
UPDATE: To those asking what was up with Spring Hill Lane, I just added the top photo to give you a better idea of what's up. If you click on the image you can see the serious snow drifting across the road. Now, here's the deal. I'm told somewhere in the middle of it is a pickup truck, (you cannot see) buried underneath it and the plows cannot plow it because it's right in the middle of the road. That's why the road is closed.

The Precarious State Of Our Union

by Peter Schiff
Recently by Peter Schiff: Obama's Bank Plan Is 'Doomed to Failure'

In this week's much anticipated State of the Union address, President Obama again demonstrated his poor understanding of the fundamental problems that confront our nation. By following the advice of the same people who helped guide our economy to the precipice of total collapse, Obama now threatens to push it over the edge.

Notwithstanding his well crafted lip service regarding future spending restraint, the essence of his current program is for more government spending and larger deficits. For all his talk about job creation, his policies will further burden those who might otherwise create those jobs with higher taxes and more regulation. While he did call for tax cuts for the middle class and offered what amounts to bailouts for those struggling to repay student loans, such cuts do nothing to promote growth in the near term and will add to the deficits in the long term.

The President spoke optimistically about the future, but in reality there is little evidence to support such an upbeat outlook. He began his speech by assuring us that the worst of the storm had passed. General Custer may have said something similar when the first wave of Indian attacks ebbed at Little Big Horn.

While Obama did have some harsh words for Wall Street (not exactly a courageous political stance), he leveled no criticism at the Federal Reserve or other government agencies that had financed and guaranteed all the ridiculous real estate speculation that precipitated the crash. And while he at least conceded that the prosperity of the last decade was based on illusions, he continued to endorse the very policies that produced the mirage in the first place.

To lead us back to brighter days, he articulated a vision of a centrally planned recovery, where clean energy and a Soviet style five-year plan to double our exports would make our economy preeminent once more. He fails to understand that the only reason our economy rose to the top in the first place is that the government left it alone.

In the words of the Spanish philosopher George Santayana, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Since our President cannot even learn from the mistakes of his immediate predecessor, to say nothing of those he made himself while in the Senate or during his first year as president, we are surely doomed to repeat them, perhaps more quickly than Santayana could have imagined.

Rather than tightening the reins on the reckless monetary policy that undermined our savings, diminished our industrial output, inflated asset bubbles, and led to reckless speculation on Wall Street and excess consumption on Main Street, we are loosing them further. Rather than repealing regulations that distort markets and create moral hazards, we are adding new ones that do more of the same. Rather than cutting government spending to reduce the burden it places on our economy, we are increasing both the amount of the spending and the size of the burden. Rather than making government smaller so that the private sector can grow, we are making government bigger and forcing the private sector to shrink. Rather than paying off our debts we are taking on even more. Rather than encouraging people to save we are enticing them to spend. Rather than creating jobs, we are merely creating unemployment benefits.

As a result, instead of seeding the soil for a real recovery we are setting the stage for a prolonged depression

ARROGANCE REARS ITS UGLY HEAD IN ANNAPOLIS

The February 4 Maryland General Assembly Hearings conducted by the Ways & Means Committee was an incredible performance of utter rudeness and arrogance. Although not surprised, at least twenty of us, both unacquainted rookie- and veteran-attendees, were unanimously dumbfounded by it. Needless to say, Chairwoman Sheila Hixson's leadership was embarrassingly lacking.

We went to listen, learn and/or testify on HB92 (Job Creation and Tax Credit Bill), and HB204 (Property Tax Assessment & Appeals Task Force). The only ones apparently worthy of any respect were the "professionals", i.e. paid lobbyists and government staffers. Otherwise, during citizenry testimonies, many elected officials were either: inattentive, interrogating, condescending, mentally and physically wandering, snickering, ridiculing, and even noticeably AND PUBLICLY preoccupied with Twitter (see proof from Montgomery County's Delegate Bill Frick on http://www.americansforprosperity.com/) and other laptop activities! Their message seemed to be “hurry up and shut up!”

The arrogance we witnessed in Annapolis is exactly why millions of citizens nationwide have had enough of the politicians in their local communities, state capitols, and Washington. November 2, 2010 and recent elections will be the euphoric culmination of our campaigning and voting these jokers out of office. Until then, any amount of help to end this citizen mockery will be a tremendous contribution in helping to take our country back.

WHITE HOUSE TRESPASSERS

ACORN And Other Leftist Groups Eligible For Nearly $4 Billion In Obama's Budget

To add to the list of outrageous earmarks in Obama's fiscal 2011 budget, it appears left-wing activist groups including ACORN, the embezzlement-prone, voter-registration-fraud-plagued community organizing group, are eligible to receive up to $3.99 billion in taxpayer-backed slush money.
The funds would come indirectly from the Community Development Block Grant, one of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's longest-running programs.

The grant money goes to state and local governments. ACORN and other groups can apply for part of it directly from a local municipality in which an arm of their group is active.

"In that sense, ACORN gets lots of money from the CDBG program--but it is nearly impossible to track it because HUD doesn't track all the money" after it has gone to local and state governments, said Matthew Vadum, a senior editor at Capital Research Center. "Nobody knows how much ACORN, which has hundreds of different affiliates, has actually received over the years in CDBG funding."

In the past ACORN has also even received matching funds "from other sources" when it has gotten CDBG money, Vadum said. According to a 1997 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article, ACORN added $250,000 in matching funds to a $50,500 contract the ACORN Fair Housing Program received "to help low- and moderate-income families buy homes."

New 'Cold War' Gaining Steam

A secret intelligence report warns a number of Western nations soon could be caught up in a new "cold war" brewing between China and the United States, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The dispute apparently was sparked by a Washington decision to arm Taiwan with $6.4 billion of state-of-the art weapons systems. The deal includes 60 Black Hawk helicopters, 114 Patriot anti-missile missiles and 12 Harpoon missiles.

Now the impact could be felt in Britain as well as Germany, France and other European nations that have substantial trading relationships with China.

One of the Beijing leaders, Liu Menxiong, last week insisted, "If Washington can arm Taiwan we should be allowed to trade what we like and with who we wish. The North Koreans have stood up to America and nothing has happened to them. And Iran is doing the same. We should support them."

Delaware Elevator To The Rescue

"I just wanted to send an e-mail informing you of the help I received last night from a Delaware Elevator employee. I was stuck trying to get into my neighborhood last night at 9:45pm after waiting a half an hour for some assistance from a friend. While my friend was trying to help me get my car unstuck on Crooked Oak Ln. and Cross Creek Dr. an employee of Delaware Elevator stopped and helped push my car out. I was not able to thank him since he left before I got to a spot I would not get stuck. For the 30 minutes I was sitting in my car with my hazards on many people passed me by and just rubber necked like I was sitting there for no reason. The county never plowed my neighborhood during the last storm or the most recent storm. It came to me having to tell my mom when she came home from work to enter the wrong side of the entrance to our development so she would not get stuck like I did. I just wanted to e-mail you so that you would hopefully post it to your blog and maybe that gentleman would see it so he could know how much I appreciated his help."

WHAT TREATMENT WOULD CLINTON GET UNDER "OBAMA-CARE"?

Slick Willie’s latest heart procedure is an appropriate occasion to ponder what medical services would he have received under the Obama-care proposal that he was promoting last year. Given his current age and prior heart surgery at a fairly early age, his long-term prospects are not very favorable, despite his expensive therapeutic regime (which the average person can’t easily afford or in some cases obtain).

Under Obama-care a "Joe Blow" in similar circumstances would probably be entitled to a lifetime supply of aspirin and information about making a will. Oh, yes, and a bill for any emergency services he received.

There’s something else that Clinton probably will get, if he hasn’t already, that the rest of us can only imagine – a "get well soon" card from Monica.

WORDS OF WISDOM - DIVERT OPEN SPACE MONEY TO WICOMICO COUNTY ROADS

By now most people are seeing tremendous potholes and severe cracking all up and down the County, City, and State roadways. My advise to all of Maryland's municipalities is to send-in an emergency request to our Governor so that he can set-a-side funding to make repairs to our roadways.

Having experienced 3 major snow storms in 10 days - I believe the situation is warranted to allow Wicomico to divert open space proceeds to the Maryland roadways account.
At the past Wicomico County Council meeting I testified in-favor of the action in light of the conditions of our County's roadways.
Many in the audience sneered at my suggestion - but in light of the recent snowstorms I'm sure they are much more receptive to the idea now.

Carlisa Lorraine Travis-Abbott

Hello Joe,

My name is Michele L. Allen Carlisa's step mom. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone of WBI for never given up on Carlisa from the night she was shot September 16, 2008 and till justice is Served. Through out the 14 months I have been contacted with concerns about Carlisa's condition and flooded with prayers from everyone.

Carlisa is survived by five beautiful children ages 12-6 who adore her and miss her very much. Carlisa was taken from us by the hands of another and that was not fair. I want you and your readers know that even though this was a horrific crime committed on this family and we suffer such a great lost. Carlisa's smile could light up any room, she was so full of life and would out talk you. :-) And will be greatly missed by her children, family and friends. To know Carlisa is to love her. I am at peace with myself and as I help the children through this difficult time, we look to Carlisa as a Hero in the end of all this turmoil. For Carlisa Lorraine Travis-Abbott was able to save four lives, through the donation of some of her organs
which were not damaged from the incident. Four Lives will Live on through The Living Legacy foundation and give their family years of enjoyment as Carlisa has us for 29 years.

The best gift any family member can give is a chance for their Beloved to save a life, what a satisfied feeling it is inside knowing my baby girl saved someones life. Thank you for mentioning Carlisa on your blog. The arrangements are Saturday January 30, 2009 in Georgetown, Delaware @ Jesus is Lord of Deliverance address 40 Ingram town Road, Georgetown, Delaware 19947. The viewing is from 10-12 and the service will begin promptly at 12:00. Again Thanks to everyone who has been concerned about Carlisa L. Travis-Abbott. She is at peace now.

Loving you for Life Carlisa

SNOW EMERGENCY TIPS FROM WICOMICO FIRE PROTECTION

CLEAR EMERGENY EXITS OF SNOW

Wicomico County Fire Protection officials strongly urge county commercial, industrial and public operations to clear snow away from all emergency exits. The snow storms of the past two weeks have blocked many emergency exits with snow and ice. Edward L. Torbert, Chief Fire Protection Specialist said, “All landings, stairs and ramps associated with all building exits need to be clear and exit doors should be able to be opened to the fully open position. Those exits are as important now as they are in normal times.”

Willards Fire Department Calls Salisbury News 911 Line

Yesterday morning Bruce Hunter, (Bruce's Billiards) and I received a call from the Willards Fire department. The new roof on their brand new building was in trouble and they asked if we could get out there with our snow blower and help them clear off the massive amount of snow on their roof.

We dropped everything we were doing to head out to Willards in the hopes of helping them as best as we possibly could. We loaded the snow blower onto the ladder truck and hoisted it onto the roof. Once we got up there I realized the roof was ridged every 3 feet or so and the snow blower was about 2 inches wider than that.

This caused a serious problem but we were able to go to one side of the roof and throw a bunch of snow off one end. Talk about slick! That roof was more dangerous than any of the others we had been on as it was a metal roof with ice on it.

We did what we could but ultimately had to stop because the snow blower would get down to the metal roof and just spin. It started to become more work than shoveling the snow by hand.

Although we couldn't do what we had done in Delmar and Fruitland, we were able to get quite a bit off of one end and make it much lighter for the Firefighters to slide the rest off the roof.

I should add, one of the things I found rewarding was seeing Firefighters coming together from all different areas. We saw this in Delmar and then Willards. They don't have the staff on location to do these big jobs and when they reached out to their brothers and sisters they came from just about everywhere to lend a hand.

Helping Those in Need

Yesterday, Bruce hunter and I were able to get out there again and take care of those people who really needed the help. My cell phone kept getting one text message after the other and we felt bad for those people who had gravel driveways because we just can't do those without seriously hurting and or breaking the snow blower.

Nevertheless, we got quite a few driveways done and made a lot of elderly and handicapped people happy.

It's one thing to get a lot of snow and be tied down to your home. It's another when you know there's no way you can personally get out there and shovel it away and or afford to pay the prices many are charging to do so.

We'll have the snow blower in the shop today to get repaired and we'll let everyone know when we're able to get out there again and help others in need.

Thanks for the smiles and hugs yesterday Folks. That's worth far more than money to me any day of the week!

Remember Folks, help your neighbors. We can't do it all and there's a lot of elderly people out there that simply cannot handle this wet snow. Be A Friend.

Everyone Go Outside And Blow South!!!!!!!

CNBC's Kudlow Urged To Take On Schumer

Larry Kudlow is seriously considering a move to another network - from CNBC to C-SPAN.

The former Wall Street executive and Reagan administration economist, who preaches daily about fiscal conservatism and supply-side economics on the cable financial network, is being urged by a grass-roots group to run for the Senate in November.

His target: two-term Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York, the Senate's third-ranking Democrat, in a heavyweight matchup that could prove to be the most entertaining and caustic race of the year.

Mr. Kudlow last year dismissed a similar draft movement to run against Democratic Sen. Christopher J. Dodd in neighboring Connecticut. But the rising poll numbers for Republicans this year and the prospect of taking down one of the Senate's top Democrats has Mr. Kudlow rethinking his reluctance. The independent, Internet-based "Draft Kudlow Committee" has jumped in to help collect money and gather supporters - and pressure the TV host to make a run.

"As one of the architects of the Reagan tax cuts that sparked one of the greatest economic booms in modern times, he is recognized as a leading anti-tax, supply-side economist," according to the Web site draftkudlow.com, which shows the TV host in his trademark white, collared shirt.

"New York deserves a better senator than Chuck Schumer - far, far better. Help us convince Larry Kudlow to enter the Senate race," the site says.

Mr. Kudlow is playing it coy, but he is clearly entertaining the idea of jumping into the race.

A Daily Times Delivery Comment Worthy Of A Post

I have never been a fan of printed newspapers except for using them to light a fire or back in the stone ages when that was the only place to browse classifieds. In recent years, with the internet media availability so widespread, I am even more against the waste. However, I have supported my husband in what he found an easy way to make some extra money by delivering for the Daily Times. UNTIL this past week!
Sam Oradat and his boss Nikki are pushing these drivers over the edge! He was STILL calling and texting them all night long! He is very upset that some of them were not willing to risk their lives to deliver this waste! He has called my husband repeatedly and my husband clearly told him that he was not going out to deliver newspapers so guess what!?.... Sam Oradat said he is going to drop MORE newspapers off at the end of our driveway! Anyone who would like, is welcome to come get them. I have a hallway full of Sunday inserts (coupons) and stacks and stacks of newspapers from this week at the end of my long, snowed in drive. Please come get one if you want. Morris Leonard Rd.

Btw...
My husband put in his 30 days notice last week anyway (mandatory or he will lose money.)

Obama's Stimulus Creating Green Jobs Overseas

Although Barack Obama and other Democrats touted the $787 billion stimulus package as a way to create green jobs that would put Americans back to work, new reports show the spending package has mostly created green jobs for foreign workers.

U.S. Department of Energy statistics show 79 percent of the $2.1 billion in stimulus money allocated for wind energy has been paid to foreign manufacturers.

The Spanish company Iberdrola has received $443 million; the Portuguese company EDP has received $229 million; and the British company Terra Firma, which bought a large wind farm in western Pennsylvania, received $42 million.

Analysts worry the stimulus funds will also help create manufacturing jobs in China, and a Texas consortium’s plans to build a wind farm that primarily will rely on Chinese-made turbines using $450 million in stimulus money underscores this fear.

States Get New Leeway To Tally Prisoners In Census

States are getting new leeway in tallying their prisoners in the 2010 census — a move that could reshape the political map, increasing urban population numbers while reducing the figures for rural voting districts where inmates are incarcerated.

The Census Bureau said this week it would release data on prison populations to states when they redraw legislative boundaries next year.

Previously, the agency provided the breakdowns on group quarters, like prisons, after states finished their high-stakes redistricting. That resulted in districts with prisons getting extra representation in their legislatures, despite laws in some states that say a prison cell is not a residence.

Now that the prison data is being made available earlier, states can decide whether they want to count inmates for purposes of redistricting and, if so, where they should be considered residents — in rural towns, where prisons are often built, or cities, where many prisoners came from.

Census director Robert Groves made the decision after weeks of discussion with Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-Mo., and with public interest and black groups. They called it an important first step toward shifting federal resources and representation back to urban communities, where they believe the aid is needed the most.

"For too long, communities with large prisons have received greater representation in government on the backs of people who have no voting rights in the prison community," said Brenda Wright, director of the Democracy Program at Demos, a research and advocacy organization. "The Census Bureau's new data will greatly assist states and localities in correcting this injustice."

The impact could be strongly felt in states such as New York, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Texas and Maryland, where prisons are found in more sparsely populated areas. In New York, for instance, most of the 60,000 inmates live in prisons in rural upstate communities, even though half the inmate population committed crimes in New York City.

STATE POLICE HELICOPTER DAMAGED PRIOR TO LIFT-OFF

(Landover, MD) – No one was injured, but a Maryland State Police helicopter was damaged last night while preparing to depart from a Prince George’s County hospital helipad after completing a medevac mission.

Just before 11:00 p.m. yesterday, the crew of “Trooper 2,” the Maryland State Police helicopter stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, was initiating lift-off procedures on the helipad at the Prince George’s Hospital Center in Landover. The initial investigation indicates that as the pilot was applying power to the helicopter engines to begin the lift-off, the tail of the aircraft lowered several inches and impacted a snow bank along the perimeter of the ground-based helipad. The helicopter was not airborne at the time of the accident. The crew immediately shut down the aircraft engines and inspected the helicopter.

Neither crew member was injured. No one else was on-board the aircraft. The tail section of the aircraft was damaged. The extent of the damage will not be known until further examination. No other property was damaged.

The crew of Trooper 2 had completed a medevac mission of two patients to the hospital. The patients had been involved in a traffic crash in southern Anne Arundel County. The patients had been off-loaded and were being treated inside the hospital when the accident occurred.

The helicopter crew included the pilot, Corporal Timothy N. Siebold, and flight paramedic, Sergeant Nathan H. Wheelock. Corporal Siebold is a 20-year veteran of the Maryland State Police and has been a pilot with the Aviation Command for four years. He previously served as an Army pilot with the Maryland Army National Guard. Sergeant Wheelock is a 12-year veteran of the Maryland State Police and has been a flight paramedic with the Aviation Command for about ten years.

Major Andrew J. McAndrew, Commander of the Aviation Command, responded to the scene along with directors from his command. Notification of the accident was made to the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

NTSB officials said they would not be responding to the scene. FAA officials said a decision would be made later this morning regarding their response to the helipad for an inspection.

The American Eurocopter Dauphin N2 helicopter will be transported later today on a flatbed trailer to the Maryland State Police Aviation Command Headquarters at Martin State Airport. A thorough inspection will be initiated at that time.

The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has commenced an investigation into this accident. As required by federal regulations, the Maryland State Police will file a written report with the NTSB within ten days.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post

Donna has left a new comment on your post "The Call Is Being Answered By Our Farmers

9:47 while sitting warm and cozy watching everyone else do all they can to help out in this time of need, please tell us what you have done?

In your demented way of thinking it is a farmers civic duty to plow roads with their $250k+ pieces of equipment built for working the fields, please tell us who is obligated to make the payments, pay for maintenance and fuel. Then tell us who will make the payments and pay all other expenses when the farmers can't get in their fields until late spring due to all this snow. Then tell us where your next meal will come from, and don't say the grocery store. The grocery stores and restaurants will be SOL if the farmers can't produce food.

Who's responsible for the collapse of the 50+ chicken houses? Is it your civic duty to go out and help rebuild them so you will have chickens to throw on the grill this summer? Guessing on the low end of 20,000 birds per house that's 1 million birds that won't make it to the grocery stores and restaurants. They can't be rebuilt in these conditions so will have to wait until spring, that brings the houses up to working condition sometime in late summer. So now we're down approximately 3 flocks or 3 million birds, or more, IF they are up and running by July.

So instead of telling everyone what the civic duties of a farmer is, in your opinion, why don't you get off your ass, go out and find the money to help these farmers rebuild or replace what they are losing right now. If they can't grow food or chickens until late in the year they lose money and won't be able to pay their own bills.

You of course won't care when it's the farmer losing their ass as long as they are out doing what you consider to be their civic duty.

You are an A$$!
