RESERVOIR SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MISSING MAN

(Finksburg, MD) – The search is continuing late this afternoon in a Carroll County reservoir for a man who disappeared under the surface yesterday while swimming with friends.

Police and rescue personnel are continuing their search for Justin D. Oliver, 20, of the 4900-block of Wilkens Avenue, Catonsville, Md. He has not been located as of 5:00 p.m. today.

Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barracks were called at 5:43 p.m. yesterday to respond to the section of Liberty Reservoir off Deer Park Road near the Carroll/Baltimore County line. Troopers arrived with members of the Gamber Volunteer Fire Department and were told three friends had been jumping into the reservoir from rocks located in an area about one-half mile from the road. Two of the friends decided to swim across a cove about 100 yards wide. One of them made it across. The other, identified as Oliver, said he was having difficulty making it across and was turning back.

On his way back to shore, his friends said Oliver disappeared under the water. Both friends swam into the area to search for him, but were unable to find him and notified authorities.

A search of the reservoir was launched last night and continued throughout the evening. It included divers from the Gamber Volunteer Fire Department and searchers from the Maryland State Police, a helicopter from the State Police Aviation Command, and search dogs from Mason Dixon Search and Rescue.

Maryland State Police, Baltimore Police Department, and Gamber VFD dive teams searched the reservoir area throughout the day today. They were assisted by search dogs from Mason Dixon Search and Rescue and the Natural Resources Police, as well as personnel from the Baltimore Public Works Department and other Carroll County fire departments, all of whom were directed by a Maryland State Police professional search coordinator.

The search is expected to continue until this evening, when it will be suspended. State Police and search teams are expected to return with additional dive teams to continue the search tomorrow morning.

CASA de Maryland Gets Political

CASA de Maryland, the organization funded by Maryland taxpayer dollars to help ILLEGAL immigrants, is venturing out into politics.  Wait a second; I thought they were already “political”.  They are, but now they will OVERTLY engage in partisan political activity.

Dubbed CASA in Action, the group sent out surveys to politicians in Montgomery and Prince George's counties and will endorse primary candidates who promote Hispanic causes.

Among the questions: Whether candidates support giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, whether English should be the official state language, and whether office seekers would push for more funding for Hispanic nonprofits.

"It allows immigrants and low-income people in Maryland to come together and express their political priorities," said spokeswoman Eliza Leighton.

Should this preclude CASA from receiving taxpayer dollars?  NO!  They shouldn’t have been receiving tax dollars before; but this twist really changes the playing field.  While not illegal, Marylanders should ask if CASA is a responsible use of taxpayer funds.

Organizers for CASA in Action expect to make serious political headway in local and state races, citing the "enormous unrealized potential of the Latino vote."

Given that election judges cannot demand ID, or that county electoral boards cannot demand proof of citizenship beyond an individuals say-so, groups like “CASA in Action” have to make Marylanders seriously question the validity of elections.

States Attorney Davis Ruark Makes A Statement On The Emory Court Shooting

Wicomico County States Attorney Davis Ruark stated today to Salisbury News that it "appeared to be a double homicide".

Some have been trying to make comments implying they thought things would get better with a new police Chief in Salisbury. We ALL know who's trying to make those kind of comments, (JT) however, with a former Police Chief who claimed he didn't see a thing, while pulling Casey Tilghman off Rachel Polk, denying there were any Gangs in Salisbury, I highly doubt things are going to change overnight.

It took many years allowing things to get out of control to get to this point and it will take many more years to fix it. Yes, things are very bad in Salisbury. Now is the time to show any and all support, (no matter who the Chief of Police is) to help curb crime.

Having a Mayor who picks on the SPD first, reducing their budget and then allows a $900,000.00 Fire Boat to be purchased when the City clearly doesn't need it, nothing will change until the City gets their priorities straight.

Making stupid statements and pointing fingers at someone like me will NOT help curb crime in the City of Salisbury.

Facing it head on and doing what we can to stop it is the answer, or at least part of the answer. This Mayor and City Council need to act fast. Wasn't it more than a year ago Council President Louise Smith read a statement before a Council Meeting stating something must be done right away, then she reduced their budget!

Start using your heads when you vote next time Folks. People are dying. They're getting murdered. Sarah, Anitra, the list goes on and on. Innocent people are being killed on the streets and in their homes.

What do YOU think can be done to stop these murders?

Jobless Benefits: It's The Economy, Stupid

Cutting payments could slow growth, bringing more job cuts

While the political debate over providing jobless benefits for out-of-work Americans has been divisive, the economics are pretty clear-cut. With the economy showing signs of faltering, cutting off checks to millions of consumers could slow spending, weaken demand, and put even more people out of work.

After two failed attempts, the Senate is expected to vote again Tuesday on a measure that would restore benefits for more than two million workers who have been laid off for long stretches.

Democrats have argued that with the long-term unemployment rate at historic highs, the government has an obligation to provide for people who are out of a job. Republicans have counterargued that at a time of unprecedented budget deficits, the government can’t afford to take on more debt. With the fall election approaching, polls show voters divided on the issue.
The argument is moot for jobless Americans, who want a job with a paycheck to spend.

“When demand is as slack as it is now the worst thing you can do is make it harder for consumer to make a purchase,” said Ross Eisenbrey, an analyst at the labor-focused Economic Policy Institute. “If you took all of the (unemployment) benefits out of the economy, you wouldn’t put anyone to work. All you’ll do is suck demand out of the economy and make it more likely that employers will lay people off.“

The House already has passed a bill to maintain benefits through November, at a cost of about $34 billion. The money would be borrowed, adding to the national debt — now roughly $13.2 trillion. Republicans have pressed to have that cost paid by shifting funds already approved for other stimulus programs.

"Everyone agrees on extending the additional unemployment insurance, but the Democrat way is to insist we add it to the national debt at the same time, while blocking Republican efforts to pass the same extension without the debt," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Surgeon General Koop Urges No Vote On Kagan Based On Abortion Manipulation

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has written an extensive letter to members of the Senate calling for a no vote on the Supreme Court nomination of Elena Kagan. The letter focuses attention on the Clinton administration memos Kagan authored showing her attempting to manipulate abortion opinion.

Specifically, Koop refers to the ways in which Kagan influenced the language of a 1997 statement by American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists on partial-birth abortions.

Whereas ACOG found no occasion in which the three-day-long abortion procedure is medically necessary for women, Kagan pressured ACOG to include language saying there may be instances where it is and the Supreme Court eventually relied on that language to overturn state bans on the abortion procedure.

That eventually kept partial-birth abortions legal for several years longer until the Supreme Court reversed itself when considering a national ban Congress approved with medical findings that partial-birth abortions are medically unnecessary.

Tax Relief For Farmers

"Hi Joe:

My wife and I own approx 142 acres of farmland and woodland on Little Lane. Our taxes on this acreage was $299.73 or $2.11 per acre. I know farming is a hard and risky business but I feel the taxes on this acreage is low enough. The taxes on our farmhouse and outbuildings is approx $1701.00 per year and I don't want other County residents to feel they are subsiding me by exempting my dwelling from tax. We use County resources like schools, roads, fire protection, etc--I want to pay my fair share. One of comments on your blog regarding this said the tax reduction would compensate for the loss of value of down zoning. PLEASE--Does the person who made that comment think I would be satisfied saving $1,700 a year for the value of my development rights on 142 acres?!"

Facebook About To Reach 500 Million Members

Social networking site now most visited on the Internet

Facebook is expected to announce that it has reached the 500 million user mark this week. That's half a billion people in just six years.

It seems like only yesterday Facebook was a students-only site birthed from a Harvard University dorm room. Now it's the most visited site on the Internet and a multibillion-dollar empire.

Putting the half-billion-member-mark in perspective, The Washington Post reports that "the population inhabiting Facebook now equals that of the United States, Japan and Germany combined. Or, two Mexicos and a Brazil."

In an interview with All Things Digital, Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook's marketing director, said that the site plans to celebrate its milestone with "Facebook Stories," a collection of real-life blurbs from Facebook users about how the social networking site has impacted their lives.

"As we anticipated our 500-million milestone, and we wanted to find a different way to announce and celebrate it. In the past, it's been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realized we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users," Zuckerberg said.

POLLITT NOMINATES SPECIAL INTEREST PERSONS TO PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION

At tomorrow’s Wicomico County Council meeting, Rick Pollitt will ask for confirmation of two new members on the Commission who have special interests in zoning and development. One person currently works for the “Eastern Shore Land Conservancy” and the other is actively involved in development. These persons have overriding conflicts, if not activist personal agendas. Neither should be confirmed.

BREAKING NEWS: SHOULD WICOMICO COUNTY FARMERS GET ANOTHER TAX BREAK?

Maryland allows for a very substantial property tax reduction for property that is used in agriculture, including woodland. At present that tax break does not apply to a home site, which includes that yard area that is reasonably related to a dwelling on a farm. Thus, on their homes, farmers pay at the same tax rate as other homeowners to fund the schools, roads, etc., that the farm families use like the rest of us. That’s only fair.

But, rumor is that the County Executive, Rick Pollitt may propose a special tax break for homes located on farms, so that the tax on them would be much less than on other homes of equivalent value in subdivisions, condos and elsewhere in Wicomico County. And those other homes would have to pay higher taxes to offset the lost revenue in order to maintain the same level of total revenue from the property tax.

What do you think of that special tax break?

Crouch: Is NAACP Blind To Farrakhan & Co.?

I do not think that the NAACP was out of order in asking the Tea Party movement to separate itself from the racists in its midst, but the famous civil rights organization ought to start by following the same suggestion.

During the great March On Washington in August of 1963, the Nation of Islam was not invited. Its members were not bothered because Malcolm X was to become a bit more famous by ridiculing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the whole affair as a meaningless piece of theater held in check by the almighty white man.

But by the end of the decade, the civil rights movement had fallen to pieces shortly after King's assassination in 1968. Black Power emerged and whites were discouraged from joining or attempting to join anything supposedly free of white control.

That was the point at which previously unacceptable racist cults like the Nation of Islam became acceptable. Those brothers and sisters must have been doing something right because the white man didn't like them. Hmmm. Shoddy thinking, but pervasive.

Many have now conveniently forgotten just what The Nation of Islam believed and why it was an offense to serious political engagement. Before falling out with the cult, Malcolm X clarified its beliefs as the Nation's most popular spokesman. His attacks on the cult seem to have led directly to his assassination, if we are to believe what Louis Farrakhan says in the film "Brother Minister."

According to the X-man, the Nation had taught him nothing but lies he felt compelled to repudiate. The Nation believed that the white man was a "grafted" creature made in a laboratory by a mad black scientist named Yakub. The loony scientist did the dirty deed 6,000 years ago, intent on destroying the world. "Mother ships" were circling the Earth and waiting for the cosmic order to rain fire on the United States, which was prophesied to burn for 777 years. And so on.

It would surprise us all if Ben Jealous, who now heads the NAACP, were to stop appearing as part of televised forums with Louis Farrakhan, such as the one Tavis Smiley organized last spring in Chicago.

Were Jealous and the rest disturbed and vocal about Farrakhan's presence, it would suggest some actual integrity of the sort we are not accustomed to hearing from "black leaders" and "public intellectuals." Racial complaint has become too lucrative a hustle, and a hustler must always remain true to the game. Principles never sell as well as slogans.

10 Ways You’re Being Fleeced By Banks

Taxpayers are rightfully angrier than ever before about the state of the U.S. economy and the government’s handling of the financial crisis; perhaps even more so than the Colonists at the original Tea Party. After all, it appears that the only group benefiting during this painful slide into recession are the very people who caused the crisis — The Banks.

On the verge of bankruptcy in 2008, the banks are now once again making record profits and paying record bonuses, while nearly every other industry struggles to keep their head above water. The banks seem to have designed the system where all businesses and individuals are dependent on them for credit, and without new lending industry grinds to a halt. Given that banks can make risk-free profits by front running the stock market and selling $600 trillion of worthless derivatives for monster gains, there seems to be little motivation for them to lend money at today’s record-low interest rates.

Average Americans continue to be looted by this bank-controlled economic system through taxation and other more subtle ways:

Salisbury Introduces A Dry Car Wash

With no water and a sign that is misleading, OASIS Car Wash remains stagnant without water. Council Members are bickering about what to do while the owner can't come up with the funding to pay back what it allegedly owes to the City.

Now, that being said, I want you to think about something here Folks. The City claims OASIS owes more than $200,000.00 in impact fees for the past two years. That's about $9,000.00 a month in water fees alone. Who in their right mind would pay $9,000.00 a month, (or expect to pay) just for water alone? Then consider what it cost to purchase the land, build the building, purchase the equipment and finance it all while still owing the City $9,000.00 a month on top of other major expenses.

I'm not suggesting it be free. I'm simply saying the City is driving businesses out of Town because of their stupid impact fees and quite frankly I think they're nuts. It was one thing to charge an impact fee when times were good but this is outrageous.

The Salisbury Zoo runs water 24/7 in exhibits that simply flows into ponds and right back into the sewer drain. They drain and fill the Bear Pool frequently and power wash it on a regular basis. There are fountains throughout the City that do the same thing, yet they conserve nothing. Wouldn't it be smarter to fill them up and leave it for the day, then drain them at night, clean them and fill them back up again for the next day?

If you're wondering why things are so expensive in the City, (water wise) now you know. However, the City's WWTP can only run at 50% most of the year after spending $84,000,000.00 and now an additional $50,000,000.00 to make it right. They have driven out numerous businesses because of their failure to properly run a business, (the City) and I have been preaching this for far too many years.

Something needs to change and the City needs business minded people to run it. Two Council Members filed Bankruptcy, proving they can't even handle their own personal finances. One Member refuses to step down in order to allow the City to move forward. Just what is it going to take before every one realizes its not working.

Perhaps the City is waiting for a Bailout, just like every other major business across America. Wake up and stop acting like fools. If you think things are bad now, I can assure you its going to get a whole lot worse, you'll see.

McConnell: Jobless Benefits Must Be Offset With Spending Cuts

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) on Sunday insisted that any extension of unemployment benefits be offset with spending cuts.

Remaining defiant after President Barack Obama accused the Republican leadership Saturday of obstructionism, McConnell told CNN’s “State of the Nation” that the administration needed to end its “incredible spending spree.”

“We’re all for extending unemployment insurance,” McConnell said. “The question is, when are we going to get serious” about the surging federal deficit.

Democratic senators are expected to try again on Tuesday to extend unemployment benefits that expired in May, following a failure to overcome Republican opposition last month. Republicans have called for the $34 billion cost of the legislation to be paid for by spending cuts.

Tea Party Leader Backs Proposed Summit On Racism

A leader of the Tea Party on Sunday called for a national “tea summit” to ease tensions over race in America.

In a face-off between the conservative political movement and the NAACP on CBS “Face the Nation” on Sunday, TeaParty365 co-founder David Webb said the head of the NAACP was practicing “selective racism” in calling on the party to denounce members that use racist language.

Webb, an African-American, accused NAACP President Benjamin Jealous of “playing the race card” for suggesting that fringe elements attending tea party rallies were representative of all members of the movement.

He also cited steps the party was taking in an effort to be more inclusive, such as planning an upcoming unity rally and expelling Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams for a letter satirizing the NAACP that Webb called “offensive.”

Webb also welcomed the idea of holding joint town hall meetings with the NAACP, recalling the meeting President Barack Obama hosted last July with Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who is an African-American, and police officer James Crowley, who is white, following an altercation between the two men.

“Think what it would mean to this nation if we would have an open forum and a real tea summit–instead of a beer summit–on race relations,” he said, referring to the Obama-initiated meeting between Gates and Crowley.

Jealous said he was open to the idea, but said the forum should address issues other than race. “There should be no debate about racism,” he said.

While praising Webb for speaking out against racism, Jealous called for other tea party leaders to “come out and say things nationally.”

Vice President Joe Biden said on ABC News’s “This Week” that neither he nor President Barack Obama believed the Tea Party was a racist organization.

“Elements that were involved in some of the Tea Party folks expressed racist views…but I wouldn’t characterize the Tea Party as racist,” he said.

GOP Sees Path To Control Of Senate

Democrats for the first time are acknowledging that Republicans could retake the Senate this November if everything falls into place for the GOP, less than two years after Democrats held a daunting 60-seat majority.

Leaders of both parties have believed for months that Republicans could win the House, where every lawmaker faces re-election. But a change of party control in the Senate, where only a third of the members are running and Republicans must capture 10 seats, seemed out of the question.

That's no longer the case. The emergence of competitive Republican candidates in Wisconsin, Washington and California—Democratic-leaning states where polls now show tight races—bring the number of seats that Republicans could seize from the Democrats to 11.

Democrats now control the Senate 59-41—after the death of Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was replaced by Republican Sen. Scott Brown—including two independents who usually vote with them. That means Republicans need 10 seats to take a 51-49 advantage.

Republicans would have to win virtually every competitive race to retake the Senate, without losing any seats of their own—clearly an uphill climb. The trouble for Democrats is that many trends are against them. Surveys show that Republicans are more motivated than Democrats to go to the polls, and that voters are looking for new leadership in Congress.

"I think there is definitely a chance" of losing the Senate, said Democratic strategist Gary Nordlinger, a Washington-based media consultant. "I wouldn't call it a probability, but there is certainly a chance."

"Republicans still have to [win] all the competitive races in order to get to a majority, but at least there are enough seats on the table to pull it off," said Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report.

Two Time Champion Fernando Guerrero Returns Home To Salisbury

Fernando Guerrero won his second Championship Belt last Friday and returned home Saturday to a crowd of supporters, fans and press to welcome him home.

All smiles, (as usual) Fernando signed autographs, took pictures with fans and did interviews. He explained how he was a bit sore in the hip area from around 20 low blows. Other than that, he was just fine and happy to return.

His cell phone was ringing off the hook but he ignored it and spent time thanking everyone for coming out. Trainer/Manager Hal Chernoff looked far more worn out than Fernando did, that's for sure. Hal couldn't wait to get home and get some sleep. Its tough growing old, isn't it Hal!

Great job Team Guerrero and Congratulations once again. Fernando Guerrero is now 19-0.

Welcome To Salisbury Maryland, The All America City

For several weeks now I have been asked to please make a trip to the Salisbury Airport and take some pictures of the weeds growing everywhere. I thought, it couldn't be that bad, could it?

Well, when I went to greet Fernando at the Airport this weekend, WOW! I know for a fact that Mayor Jim Ireton personally went there last Tuesday to see Fernando off, did he not see what was going on there. Does this man not take any PRIDE in Salisbury. Oh, I know some might say this is a County issue but I know if I was Mayor of Salisbury I would have made a call to Rick Pollitt and said, look, you need to do something about this immediately.

Clearly this was not the case and or done and the Airport continues to look like crap. Can you just imagine all of the people flying into that Airport heading to Ocean City and this is what they get to see.

While I know funding is tight, a couple of bottles of Round Up and a few employees there who take pride in their jobs could take some time out of their days to at least spray down these weeds.

Think about it like this Folks. If a business as large as the Airport refuses to take care of such issues, it's no wonder crime is on the rise. No one gives a crap and I just can't see the City/County giving residents citations when they can't even care for their own property.

This is embarrassing, to say the least.

A Thing Of Beauty Right Here In Salisbury

While you might not expect to see such a sight right here in Salisbury, look no further than right across the street from the Salisbury Airport. Click on this image to enlarge it.

Md. May Temporarily Lift Ban On Female Crab Harvest

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After two years of heavy restrictions on crabbing throughout the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland officials are considering eliminating one restriction watermen say is particularly harmful to their livelihoods.

The state may lift the ban on harvesting female crabs from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4 this year, said Brenda Davis, blue crab program manager for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The decision will be made by the department secretary and may come within the next few weeks.

Fisheries scientists have determined that because of increased numbers of crabs in the bay this year, the department may be able to make small adjustments to the 2010 harvest regulations "while still maintaining safe harvest levels," said Darlene Pisani, director of communications for DNR.

It's unlikely any other restrictions on crabbing will be lifted anytime soon, Davis and other state officials said.

Fried Chicken, Krispy Kreme And Lobbying

Last December, a $500 donation could buy a ticket to a fundraiser that, the invitation said, would feature "Bojangles' Fried Chicken, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, And Mel Watt, of course! [1]" Two days later, Watt, a Democratic congressman from North Carolina, withdrew a provision from the House's financial reform bill that would have regulated loans from car dealers.

This event and several others have come under scrutiny by the Office of Congressional Ethics [2], The New York Times reported today. The ethics office sent donors and party hosts a formal request for documents [3] relating to a number of fundraisers for members of Congress in the run-up to the House vote on financial reform last December.

The Tea Party – Exactly What We Do Need

It seems that many of GOP “leadership” don’t think too much of the Tea Party movement.  They didn’t have much regard for those of us who supported Ronald Reagan in 1976 either.  Granted, it can be a fine line between nominating strong, conservative candidates and unelectable loons, but better to nominate a loon than keep supporting the same Do-Do’s that have turned the Regan Revolution into “borrow and spend” Dem-lite.

Trent Lott is mistaken.  More Jim DeMints are exactly what we need.

HIV Costs May Hit $35 Billion A Year, Group Fears

Nations need to focus on prevention to stop 'costly time-bomb'

LONDON
— The International HIV/AIDS Alliance warned on Saturday that the annual cost of tackling the HIV epidemic could balloon to $35 billion by 2030 if governments fail to invest in efficient, targeted and cost-effective prevention measures.

On the eve of an international conference on AIDS in Vienna, the Alliance said the AIDS virus, which already infects around 33.4 million people across the world, was a "costly time-bomb" for families, governments and donors.

"For every two people who get treatment, five others get infected. At this rate, spending for HIV will rise from $13 billion now to between $19 and $35 billion in just 20 years time," Alvaro Bermejo, executive director of the Alliance, said in a statement.

International AIDS Alliance brings together AIDS charities and advocacy groups from across the world.

Bermejo said authorities running national AIDS programs around the world needed to increase HIV prevention by tackling the barriers that stop marginalized groups -- such as drugs users, prostitutes and gay men in some countries -- from getting HIV treatment and services.

If they targeted resources at those most affected they could "cut more new infections and still have savings to put into scaling up treatment," he said.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS is transmitted during sex, in blood and on needles and in breast milk. It gradually wears down the immune system and can take years to cause symptoms, and has killed 25 million people since the pandemic began in the early 1980s.

U.S. Demands Action Over Seep Near BP Well

Government, oil giant clash over what to do next with capped Gulf gusher

NEW ORLEANS
— A seep has been detected around BP's busted oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, causing new concerns about how well a newly installed cap is working and prompting the government to demand that BP step up its monitoring of the seabed.

Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen announced the seep late Sunday and made the demands in a letter to BP. He did not say what was coming from the seep.

Since pressure readings on the cap weren't as high as expected, the concern is that there is a leak elsewhere in the wellbore, meaning the cap may have to be reopened to prevent the environmental disaster from becoming even worse and harder to fix.

Scientists still aren't sure whether the pressure readings mean a leak elsewhere in the well bore, possibly deep down in bedrock, which could make the seabed unstable. Oil would have to be released into the water to relieve pressure and allow crews to hook up the ships to bring the oil out, BP and Allen have said.

Tea Party Not A Racist Movement, Biden says

Comment follows row between NAACP and Tea Party Express over 'offensive' blog post

WASHINGTON
— The tea party is not a racist group, Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday, though he believes that some of those involved in the movement have expressed racist views.

"Very conservative, very different views on government and a whole lot of things," Biden said during an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC's "This Week." "But it is not a racist organization."

President Barack Obama doesn't think so, either, Biden said.

Obama Official Delivers Pro-Israel Speech, Hails 'Iron Dome'

A top U.S. State Department official said the U.S. has tremendously increased its defense aid to Israel in light of increasing threats the Jewish State faces.

The message was delivered in a rare speech on Friday by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Andrew J. Shapiro. He said that U.S. President Barack Obama has asked Congress to allocate $205 million to accelerate development of the “Iron Dome” anti-rocket system – and that the House of Representatives has already done so.

One reporter at the State Department press briefing on Friday referred to Shapiro’s “Obama Administration loves Israel; please vote Democratic in November” speech. The Associated Press similarly reported that “the election-year message of increased U.S. aid to Israel seems aimed at assauging [sic] the concerns of many Jewish voters that Obama remains committed to Israel's security.”

"As surely as the bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable, our commitment to Israel's qualitative military edge has never been greater," Shapiro said.

The $205 million for Iron Dome is “above and beyond the $3 billion in Foreign Military Financing that the Administration requested for Israel in fiscal year 2011,” Shapiro said. In 2010, he said the administration requested $2.775 billion from Congress in security assistance funding specifically for Israel, the largest such request in U.S. history.

The aid package, which is the most extensive in U.S.-Israel history, does not come without strings attached. “It is our hope that the Administration’s expanded commitment to Israel’s security will advance the process by helping the Israeli people seize this opportunity and take the tough decisions necessary for a comprehensive peace,” Shapiro said.

'Israel Convinces US With Credible Military Plan On Iran'

Have Israel’s efforts to convince the US to threaten Iran with a credible military option paid off? According to recent media reports, the answer might be yes.

Since the US pushed a fourth round of sanctions against Iran through the UN Security Council last month, Jerusalem has increased diplomatic efforts to convince the White House that for the sanctions to work, a credible military option needs to be on the table to scare Iran to reconsider its pursuit of a nuclear weapon.

An indication that this might have happened came in the latest issue of Time magazine, in an article titled “An Attack on Iran: Back on the Table.”

Written by Joe Klein, the article claims that in recent months, the US military’s Central Command has made significant progress in planning targeted air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, some of which were deemed impossible to penetrate just two years ago.

According to the report, the progress was made possible by the “vastly improved human-intelligence operations in the region.”

Israel has reportedly been “brought into the planning process.”

Israel’s current strategy regarding Iran is to cooperate with the White House and at the same time to continue preparing its own independent military option. This dates back to the beginning of Barack Obama’s term as president in January 2009, when Israel warned against engaging the Iranians but eventually acceded to the new US policy, albeit while demanding that the talks be limited in time.

When the talks failed and Obama moved to the sanction track, Jerusalem again said it was in favor of sanctions but that they needed to be tough and crack down on the energy sector.

Now that the latest round of sanctions have been approved, Israel has been calling for the US and the international community to threaten Iran with a credible military option.

“Without this, the sanctions will likely not work,” a senior defense official said.

‘BIRDS FALL SHORT IN EXTRA-INNINGS THRILLER, 9-8

Shorebirds Play Crawdads on the Road Tuesday Night

SALISBURY, Md.
– West Virginia plated two runs in the top of the 11th inning to salvage the final game of the series against the Delmarva Shorebirds, 9-8, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium Sunday.

The loss for the Shorebirds (45-48) ends a six-game winning streak. The Shorebirds battled back from a 7-1 deficit, to tie the game, 7-7, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth before falling in extra innings.

West Virginia (39-55) second baseman Jarek Cunningham broke the deadlock with one out in the top of 11th by depositing a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall. The Power added one more in the inning to extended to a 9-7 game before Delmarva’s second late rally fell just short.

Kelly started the inning with a base hit to left and came around to score on a one-out Tyler Townsend single up the middle. Then, with two outs Kieron Pope nearly won it for the ‘Birds with a long fly ball to right-center that was caught on the warning track by Jose Hernandez.

Alvarado (2-5) got the win with two innings of three-hit relief. Mike Williams worked the 11th for his second save of the season. James Brandhorst (1-5) took the loss for Delmarva.

Four Shorebirds had multi-hit outings led by Garabez Rosa’s 3-for-5 effort. He had two runs scored and a double in the loss. The Power were paced by Evan Chambers. He went 2-for-5 with a homer, triple and four RBIs.

Delmarva took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. T.J. Baxter started the inning with a triple off the wall in left field before Brian Conley lifted a fly to left with one out to score Baxter from third.

West Virginia broke the game open with six runs and four hits in the fourth off of starter Matt Hobgood and reliever Brian Parker.

First baseman Aaron Baker tied the game with a single to left that scored Cunningham. Two batters later, Left fielder Kyle Morgan ripped a two-run double down the right-field line made it 3-1 with one out in the inning. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Evan Chambers powered Parker’s pitch to the gap in right center to lengthen the lead to five.

Parker gave up a solo homer in the seventh to Chambers for a 7-1 lead.

Delmarva got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a Rosa double to right and a Luis Bernardo RBI single to make it 7-2.

With the game at 7-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Delmarva tallied four runs to send it to extra innings. Mark Baca started the inning on the mound for West Virginia and promptly allowed the first three Shorebirds’ hitters to reach on a single and two walks. After a strikeout, Ty Kelly singled to right field to make it a 7-5 score. That spelled the end for Baca, who was replaced by Gabriel Alvarado. Kelly then stole second to put runners on second and third. An Alvarado wild pitch scored Gary Helmick from third and Conley singled to left to knot things at 7-7.

The Shorebirds open a four-game series at Hickory Tuesday. Delmarva will send right-hander Brent Allar to the mound.

Tea Party Federation Expels Group Over Racial Writing

Tea Party Express refuses to rebuke spokesman Mark Williams

WASHINGTON
— The Tea Party political movement saw a major split over the weekend, with the National Tea Party Federation expelling a member group after its spokesman wrote an online post satirizing a fictional letter from what he called "Colored People" to President Abraham Lincoln.

On its website, the federation stated it had given the Tea Party Express, through direct contact with one of its leaders, a deadline to rebuke and remove spokesman Mark Williams.

"That leader's response was clear: they have no intention of taking the action we required for their group to continue as a member of the National Tea Party Federation," the federation stated.

Therefore, effective immediately the National Tea Party Federation is expelling Tea Party Express from the ranks of our membership."

Federation spokesman David Webb, interviewed Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation," called the blog post "clearly offensive."

Williams, who said his letter was satirical, started it like this: "Dear Mr. Lincoln, We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!"

"Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for?" he added. "What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bail outs directly to us Coloreds!"

Why Are Americans Such Babies About Going Green?

When it comes to green technologies, America has historically been a launching point for plenty of environmentally-friendly innovations -- the compact fluorescent bulb, wind turbines, lithium ion batteries -- only to eventually come up short and pass the buck onto other countries when it comes to implementation. So why are we so bad at going green?

The Earthquake In Your Own Words

Check out how your friends and neighbors described Friday morning's 3.6-magnitude earthquake. The following descriptions were sent via e-mail to NBCWashington.com:

"We live in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., ... This A.M. came a rumble like a huge truck was coming through. The whole house shook. I heard trees crack. ... Quite an eye opener since I thought we were immune to that sort of phenom."

"We live in Germantown, MD and heard what sounded like severe thunder followed immediately by shaking of the house/walls. It probably only lasted about a minute, but it felt like longer. At one point I was wondering if a Mack Truck ran into the back of our house!"

"This AM in Knoxville MD I felt the 3.6 Earthquake. I am between 2 mountains along rt.67 about 11.6 miles south of Boonsboro. I had just woke and I heard a rumble and thought something had struck my house. I rushed outside with my flashlight as it was just prior to daylight looking for what I thought could have been a meteor striking my home. I have a split rock home and the whole house shook. I am 63 miles from DC."

"I live in the 4800 block of South Dakota Avenue NE and now realize that I think I definitely felt the earthquake. I thought it was a large truck at first and remember thinking, "Oh my, it's going to shake the house apart". It lasted much longer than the usual large truck passing and lasted about 3 seconds which may me wonder what it was."

"I live off Shakespeare Blvd in Germantown and felt the quake at approx 5.05am. it was what woke me up, and I jumped out of bed. A few CDs sitting on my table fell on the ground and my windows were trembling. Quite scary!"

"I live in Bowie MD and this morning a little after 5 I believe it was, I heard a noise like big squirrels running over the roof. The next thing the lamp and cups on the night stand rattled and it lasted for about 10 seconds. My wife is out of town so I was worried about how I was going to tell her that we have poltergeists and we have to get an exorcist in. What a relief to find out on NBC 4 that it was only an earthquake!"
