Salisbury Mayor Barrie Parsons Tilghman supported a 10 percent water increase last year. A story in Monday's Daily Times incorrectly stated her position. We now find the Daily Times deliberately complicit in Tilghman's lie. I spoke with reporter Laura D'Alessandro before writing yesterday's post. On at least three separate occasions during our conversation I asked if she quoted Tilghman correctly. To refresh everyone's memory, Tilghman is quoted:
Tilghman said she did not recommend a water and sewer rate increase last year because citizens were already experiencing a double-digit tax hike -- 12 percent. After being pressed on the issue, by myself and others, the management of the Daily Times admitted that Tilghman's statement was false. The stance of their management now appears to be that D'Alessandro misquoted Tilghman. Unfortunately, scrutiny does not bear this out.
