Small Business Reauthorization Bill Fails In The Senate

The Small Business reauthorization bill has failed in the Senate. This after it passed a senate committee by an 18 to one vote. Nola.com reports eight weeks of debate and 150 amendments later, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), the bill's lead sponsor, has thrown in the towel. Some of those amendments would have to required all federal employees to fly coach class in the United States, and agencies to sell unused federal property. None of those add-ons was adopted.

DNC Chairwoman Appeals For Support Of Organized Labor

The new chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) appealed to labor supporters to continue their traditional support to Democrats amid concerns unions might be less willing to commit as many political resources in 2012.

Amid worries that labor could shift its resources from political activity to organizing, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) stressed the role Democrats have played this year in beating back controversial collective bargaining measures. She said she would be concerned if the labor community views Democrats as unsupportive of its agenda.

"I think that across the country, you've had widespread grassroots and particularly Democratic support pushing back against these radical proposals that are anti-union and anti-worker," Wasserman Schultz said Tuesday evening on MSNBC. "I'm concerned if the perception is, by labor, that the Democrats aren't supportive."

Wasserman Schultz boasted of being able to kill Florida Gov. Rick Scott's (R) labor reforms in Florida, and said that Democrats would be supportive of labor in the fights to come.

"I think that Democrats have been very supportive," she said. "Democratic elected leaders and Democratic activists have been very supportive of workers' rights and pro-labor, the natural home for labor's members is the Democratic Party, there's no question."
