Famous Navajo Code Talker Dies At Age 90

WWII vet and Navajo Code Talker whose words were inscribed on the congressional medals given to the group has died after a short illness in New Mexico.

“Whenever he talked about the military during that time, he always told people that heroes were the ones he left behind, that he was not a hero,” said his daughter. “That everybody pitched in, including the people in the states, the people in the military.”

It is hard to underestimate how much we relied on these brave heroes and we send our thoughts and prayers to Wilfred Billey and his family.

A Letter To The Editor About Bless Our Children

I am sick and tired year after year listening to WBOC shove their bless our children campaign down our throats. If businesses have to advertise they gave away a thousand dollars I simply won't do business with them any more.

I used to enjoy coming home from work and watching the local news but WBOC rarely shows local news these days. Between Johnnie Janosik's commercials and 10 minutes of who made what donation, then we have to listen to Paul Butler beg for even more money because they are so far behind last year. Tack on 10 minutes of weather and there's no room for true reporting anyway. The only news I saw tonight was how they are preparing for snow in Dover.

After tonight I will no longer watch WBOC. I made my small donation to the Salvation Army this year instead.

Publishers Notes: This is a tough one because I can't argue having the same feeling about how there is very little local news any more. If you think it's bad now, it will get a lot worse the closer we get to Christmas when they start repeating the same business names from day one all the way to the 25th.

On the other hand, their fundraising efforts do help a lot of Families. Perhaps they can keep it on line instead of live broadcasts and get back to what their advertisers and viewers expect from them.

Let's see what our viewers have to say in comments.

BAKER FACES PRISON FOR REFUSING TO BAKE SAME-SEX WEDDING CAKE

Jack Phillips is a baker who declined to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple because his Christian belief is that marriage exists only between a man and woman. Now a Colorado judge has ordered him to bake cakes for same-sex marriages, and if Phillips refuses, he could go to jail.

Phillips owns a small business, Masterpiece Cakeshop, in Lakewood, Colorado. A homosexual couple—Charlie Craig and David Mullins—visited Phillips’s store on July 19, 2012, asking him to bake them a cake to celebrate their wedding. Although the Colorado Constitution defines marriage as between only one man and one woman, these men claimed to have been already married in Massachusetts and wanted to celebrate the wedding in Colorado.

Phillips is an Evangelical Christian who holds to the belief that marriage is between a man and woman. When Phillips bakes a wedding cake, he interprets it as participating in the wedding celebration, and he explained that, therefore, he does not make cakes for gay marriages.

Mathias Seeking Third State Senate Term

OCEAN CITY — As expected, incumbent State Senator Jim Mathias (D-38) filed for re-election this week, setting the stage for what promises to be a spirited campaign against Republican challenger and current Delegate Mike McDermott for the seat.

Mathias, the popular incumbent state senator, whose District 38 includes Ocean City, Worcester County and much of the Lower Shore, officially filed for re-election on Wednesday. He said shortly thereafter he is ready, willing and able to continue to represent the Lower Shore in Annapolis.

“When I wake up every morning, my number one priority is doing everything I can to help the people I was elected to serve,” he said. “By working together, we have been able to make sure that the voices and the needs of the citizens of the Lower Shore have been heard in Annapolis.”

Breaking News: Centre At Salisbury SOLD To New York-Based REIT

According GlobeSt.com, Rouse Properties Inc. has expanded its reach into Virginia and Maryland via the purchase of Chesterfield Towne Center in Virginia and the Centre at Salisbury here on Delmarva, both properties were purchased from affiliates of the Macerich Co.

As the only enclosed mall for over 55 miles on Delmarva, the 862,000-square-foot Centre at Salisbury serves over 330,000 people across nine counties in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. It opened in 1990 and was renovated in 2010. The mall is anchored by Macy’s, Boscov’s, Sears, JCPenney and Dick’s Sporting Goods, and there’s also a 16-screen Regal Cinemas movie theater on a 72,000-square-foot outparcel.

Rouse assumed an existing $115 million partial-recourse loan with a 5.79% interest rate, due to mature in May 2016 to purchase the mall.

“Chesterfield Towne Center and The Centre at Salisbury are key additions to our portfolio of dominant, middle market regional malls,” says Rouse’s president and CEO, Andrew Silberfein. “These malls both serve expansive trade areas with limited enclosed mall competition, supporting strong inline and anchor sales volumes.

The Salisbury property is currently 93.8% leased; its inline sales average $320 per square foot.

MOUNT SOLEDAD CROSS WILL BE PURGED FROM VETERANS MEMORIAL

After 24 years of litigation, a federal court revealed in an emotional hearing that it has ordered the famous Mount Soledad Cross removed from a veterans memorial, holding it is a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Since 1913, a cross has stood as the centerpiece of the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in San Diego, surrounded by nearly 3,000 granite plaques, individually honoring war heroes from every American war, from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The structure is a 29-foot Latin cross, which was erected in 1954. For much of this time, it was in a city park in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego. Then, in 1989, the ACLU filed a lawsuit, arguing that allowing a cross on government land violates the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. This memorial has been embroiled in litigation ever since.

Somerset County Still Trying To Recover From Hurricane Sandy

SOMERSET COUNTY LONG TERM RECOVERY COMMITTEE OBJECTS TO DHCD’S PLAN TO REDIRECT $16 MILLION IN FEDERAL HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDS MEANT FOR SOMERSET COUNTY

Today the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee formally objected to the Department of Housing and Community Development concerning its plan to take $16 million in federal funding that was specifically set aside for Somerset County and make it available to all counties in the State of Maryland.

In a second round of disaster relief funding, known as Sandy II funds, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development allocated $20 million to the State of Maryland for disaster relief funds. In the allocation of funding, HUD instructed Maryland that 80% of these funds, or $16 million, “must be spent” in Somerset County, Maryland, which HUD deemed the Most Impacted and Distressed county in the State of Maryland.

Instead of following this requirement, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development proposes to make the entire $20 million in federal funding available to every jurisdiction in the State of Maryland and will require Somerset County, which HUD has already decided should receive the funds, to compete against these other, larger and less-impacted jurisdictions to access the funds.

A meeting is scheduled in Crownsville at DHCD headquarters on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. and representatives from the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee, Inc., and the local governments of Somerset County and the City of Crisfield plan to attend this meeting to tell Secretary Skinner not to give away their $16 million to other counties. More than one year after Hurricane Sandy, Somerset County is still working to bring all of its citizens back to recovery and these federal funds, which HUD wants to reach Somerset County, are needed for the recovery effort.

Below is a letter from the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee, Inc. to DHCD objecting to the plan. Also attached are the federal register notice requiring the funds to be spent in Somerset County and the DHCD ad that proposes to make the funds available statewide.

The Honorable Raymond A. Skinner
Secretary
Department of Housing and Community Development
100 Community Place
Crownsville, MD 21032

Re:       Objection to Proposed Substantial Amendment to the Maryland
Consolidated Plan concerning the $16 million that is allocated to
Somerset County which DHCD proposes to make available statewide

Dear Secretary Skinner:

The Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee, Inc. formally objects to the Proposed Substantial Amendment to the Maryland Consolidated Plan that was advertised in the Crisfield Somerset County Times on or about November 27, 2013.

This amendment purports to notify all jurisdictions in Maryland of the availability of $20 million in federal funding. The source of this funding is from HUD and the criteria for spending these funds were set forth in a Federal Register Notice on November 18, 2013. That notice specified “… a minimum percentage that must be spent in the HUD-identified Hurricane Sandy affected Most Impacted and Distressed counties” and set out in a table that, for the State of Maryland, 80% of the appropriation must be spent in Somerset County. See, 78 F.R. 69,104, at 69,105.

Your advertisements states that “since all counties in Maryland were declared major disaster areas under at least one of the above listed storms, funding will be made available to all eligible jurisdictions (counties and Baltimore City) in the State”. Your advertisement appears to suggest that any political subdivision in Maryland that was affected by Sandy, Irene, the Derecho, and Isabel could apply for funds that, according to HUD “must be spent” in Somerset County.

These funds were pre-determined by HUD to be needed in Somerset County. I spoke by phone with Ms. Carol Gilbert, DHCD’s deputy secretary, and she expressed the department’s concern that these funds would not be able to be spent in Somerset County and stated DHCD’s desire to spend them elsewhere in Maryland rather than returning them to the state.

I assure you that, among Somerset County, the City of Crisfield, and the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee, Inc., sufficient projects exist to spend at least this amount of funding, if not the entire $20 million.  Our organizations are working together to come up with a plan for spending these funds in a way that best benefits the residents and businesses of the county that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

The entire concept of setting up a competition among the counties to vie for funding that the federal government has already said “must be spent” in Somerset County would cause our local officials and the long term recovery committee to devote time and resources toward winning a competition with larger, better funded counties that it could better spend bringing its citizens to recovery. The regulations do not permit you to use these funds in any other county. We who are struggling to meet the needs of hurricane victims can scarce afford to divert our resources toward fighting a battle we should never have to fight in the first place.

We would hope that DHCD would make clear to all other jurisdictions at the meeting scheduled in Crownsville on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. that the $16 million has, by federal regulation, been committed to Somerset County and is not available to their jurisdictions. Instead, we would ask that you devote substantial resources from DHCD toward assisting Somerset County, the City of Crisfield and the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee, Inc. with formulated broad-based criteria on those categories of spending that will qualify to use the $16 million in funding awarded to Somerset County. We request a meeting with all of those persons at your agency and at HUD who can assist Somerset County in coming up with criteria for the spending of the $16 million that will comport with the requirements of the CDBG-DR regulations.

Sincerely yours,
John K. Phoebus

4 Simple Questions From A Reputable Attorney

This really should get your "gray matter" to churning, even if you are an Obama fan. I wouldn't want my hero to be made out to be a liar, would you?

For all you "anti-Fox News" folks, none of this information came from Fox. All of it can be verified from legitimate sources (Wikipedia, the Kapiolani hospital website itself, and a good history book, as noted herein). It is very easy for someone to check out.

4 Simple Questions

1. Back in 1961 people of color were called 'Negroes.' So how can the Obama 'birth certificate' state he is "African-American" when the term wasn't even used at that time ?

2. The birth certificate that the White House released lists Obama's birth as August 4, 1961 & Lists Barack Hussein Obama as his father. No big deal, Right ? At the time of Obama's birth, it also shows that his father is aged 25 years old, and that Obama's father was born in " Kenya , East Africa ".

This wouldn't seem like anything of concern, except the fact that Kenya did not even exist until 1963, two whole years after Obama's birth, and 27 years after his father's birth. How could Obama's father
have been born in a country that did not yet Exist? Up and until Kenya was formed in 1963, it was known as the " British East Africa Protectorate". (check it below)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenya_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenya)

3. On the Birth Certificate released by the White House, the listed place of birth is "Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital ".
This cannot be, because the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called "Kaui Keolani Children's Hospital" and "Kapi'olani Maternity Home", Respectively.
The name did not change to Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged.
How can this particular name of the hospital be on a birth certificate dated 1961 if this name had not yet been applied to it until 1978 ?
(CHECK IT BELOW)
http://http/http/www.kapiolani.org/women-and-children/about-us/default.aspx
(http://www.kapiolani.org/women-and-children/about-us/default.aspx)

Why hasn't this been discussed in the major media ?

4. Perhaps a clue comes from Obama's book on his father. He states how proud he is of his father fighting in WW II. I'm not a math genius, so I may need some help from you. Barack Obama's "birth certificate" says his father was 25 years old in 1961 when Obama was born. That should have put his father's date of birth approximately 1936-if my math holds (Honest! I did That without a calculator!!!) Now we need a non-revised history book-one that hasn't been altered to satisfy the author's goals-to verify that WW II was basically between 1939 and 1945. Just how many 3 year olds fight in Wars? Even in the latest stages of WW II his father wouldn't have been more than 9 years old.
Does that mean that Mr. Obama is a liar, or simply chooses to alter the facts to satisfy his imagination or political purposes ?

Very truly yours,
Rich

Now That Obama Is Allowing Chicken From China, What Will That Do To The Chicken Industry?

Do you know what is in your chicken nuggets? Thanks to Barack Obama, that is going to be a more important question than ever. At the end of August, the Obama administration quietly decided to start allowing Chinese poultry processors to ship processed chicken into the United States.

For now, the meat must originate either in the United States or in another country where the poultry population has been certified to be safe. What that means is that chickens from the United States will be shipped all the way over to China, processed in plants over there, and then shipped back across the Pacific Ocean for us to eat. Only a limited number of companies are expected to take advantage of this, but according to U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, a USDA report that Congress has seen indicates that China will likely be allowed to directly import their own chickens into this country “within a year“. What makes all of this even more disturbing is that a country-of-origin label will not be required on any of the chicken that is processed in China. So in the years ahead you could be eating chicken processed in China and not even know it.

Each year, U.S. consumers spend about 70 billion dollars on chicken. That is a tremendous amount of money, and the U.S. chicken industry supports a huge number of jobs.

So what is going to happen if cheap chicken from China starts flooding the market?

Heavy Snows Could Yield Summer Algae Blooms

ANNAPOLIS — If Maryland experiences heavy snowfall this winter, biologists predict the Chesapeake Bay could experience above-average levels of bacteria and toxic algae blooms during the summer.

While human pollution can cause bacteria growth and algae blooms, natural factors, such as climate conditions, dictate their frequency. The amount of snowfall each winter is linked to algae bloom instances in the summer, since spring snowmelt causes runoff and more nutrients to enter the bay.

“Some relation does exist between higher harmful … blooms and increased runoff related to the amount of snow, rather than just winter temperatures,” said Raghu Murtugudde, University of Maryland atmospheric and oceanic science professor. Maryland is expected to experience warmer than normal temperatures this winter, but also excess amounts of snowfall, so “harmful algal blooms may well turn out to be above normal next summer.”

North Korea Executes Kim Jong Un's Uncle

PYONGYANG, North Korea - North Korea on Friday announced the execution of Kim Jong Un's uncle, calling the leader's former mentor a traitor and "worse than a dog."

The announcement came only days after Pyongyang announced through state media that Jang Song Thaek - long considered the country's No. 2 power - had been removed from all his posts because of allegations of corruption, drug use, gambling, womanizing and leading a "dissolute and depraved life."

Jang was seen as helping Kim Jong Un consolidate power after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, two years ago. Jang was the latest and most significant in a series of personnel reshuffles that Kim has conducted in an apparent effort to bolster his power.

A Viewer Comments On The Upcoming Mayor's Neighborhood Roundtable

The next Mayor’s Neighborhood Roundtable will be held Tuesday, December 17th at 1pm in Room 306 at the GOB. JaLeesa Tate, from the Planning and Zoning Office, will be conducting a presentation on rain barrels and attendees will learn what stormwater is and how it affects the quality of our waterways. The presentation will cover at home solutions to address our current conditions. In particular, we will discuss the benefits of rain barrels. She will also cover the proper way to install a rain barrel at your home or business. She will have rain barrels here, at the meeting, that you will be able to take home if you’d like to have one.

This is no longer a Mayor's Neighborhood Roundtable. Ireton is now inviting "guests" to be the speaker so he doesn't have to answer why the city is run down and there is so much crime. If the citizens wanted to know about rain barrels then we would look them up on the internet or go to Ace Hardware.

The Mayor's Neighborhood Roundtable was set up so that representatives from each of the established neighborhoods could voice their concerns to the Mayor. This is no longer happening because the Mayor is running away from the true issues of the city.

Daily Times Claims Pollitt Used Executive Order To Refrain From Delivering Mug Shots To Newspaper

I think most of you know I'm no big fan of Rick Pollitt as a politician. As a person, what's not to like.

However, for my own personal reasons I have to side with Mr. Pollitt on this one and here's why.

You are innocent until proven guilty. Being arrested and charged with something does NOT mean you are guilty and I have personally proven that each and every time charges were brought against me.

They finger print you as an innocent person, take pictures of you and create a forever file against you, even if your completely innocent.

I can't tell you how many times over the years I have received phone calls from people charged with a DUI or DWI and they had all charges dropped. They ask for me to remove their information so they can move on with their life, yet the harm is already done.

Our legislators need to change the process and ONLY put out a press release AFTER a Judge and or Jury has convicted an individual. Until then, remember, this is America. Each person is innocent until proven guilty.

How To Beat A Photo-Enforced Speeding Ticket (or Red Light Ticket)

So PLEASE, NEVER EVER opt to pay these Photo Enforced Speeding AND Red Light tickets! You do NOT have to incriminate yourself OR implicate anyone else. It’s the government’s responsibility to provide evidence that YOU were the person driving, don’t help them in their “investigation”.

Last year I received a letter in the mail from the Washington D.C DMV claiming I was speeding. As you can see it was one of those Photo-Enforced Speeding Tickets and they had multiple pictures of my CAR. I knew better to just submit and pay a fine like the majority of people do in this country, unfortunately. I am in the habit of not taking “plea deals”, and I am always in the habit of fighting my tickets and NOT pre-paying them so I don’t have to go to court – like many folks do. I just about always record my interactions with the police, whether it’s a traffic stop or not, that way it keeps the entire situation objective, transparent and I can hold the public servant accountable if he/ she violates my rights.

There's been an armed robbery at E. Church Street and Main Street, (Thursty's). A #1 Male wearing a hoodie. Just happened.

Not To Spoil It But WBOC Is Loaded With Special News Tonight

Let's see, we can start off in Texas where a stray dog who had been living at a corporate building was adopted by one of the people working there. It then got out and wandered 18 miles back to the corporate building.

Then, get this, they showed incredible footage of a coyote running on an airport runway in Texas too. Very exciting.

Calm down now because there's a lot more. In Washington state someone actually opened up a gym for animals AND their owners. They said it was to help work off the winter blues.

At a Chicago Airport, (you are not going to believe this) they opened up a Yoga Room in the freakin airport. I know, NO WAY!

How about an 88 year old woman in North Carolina is still hunting.

To top off all of that news they closed with the following two items. Don't forget to download, (its actually UPLOAD WBOC) their new weather app. They seem to be well behind last year with Bless Our Children so they really want you to donate more money to the 400 charities WBOC elects to spread your money to, because YOU can't seem to be able to do it yourself.

That's it Folks. That was the WBOC broadcast tonight. For ANY local news do come to Salisbury News. They should rename the station AMERICA'S NEWS LEADER because they didn't, (and usually don't) cover DelMarVa at all.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Star: They Told Us We Couldn’t Pray To Jesus Because It Would Offend Muslims

While I don’t think we should deliberately try to offend people of different religions, if they find the very fact that you are a member of another faith to be offensive, then that seems like it should be their problem, not yours.

Phil Robertson, the patriarch of AMC’s mega-hit show “Duck Dynasty”, said recently the family was told to quit praying to Jesus because it might offend Muslims.

Robertson told Sports Spectrum:

So when we pray we say “In Jesus name, Amen.” …It’s a very good idea, I think. So, they would have me say, “Thank you Lord for the food. Thank you for the blessings. Amen.” So, I said, “Why would you cut out ‘in Jesus name?’” And they said, “Well, these editors they think they don’t want to offend some Muslims or something.”

South Carolina Voting On Bill To End Obamacare In State

A bill set for fast-track passage in the South Carolina Senate in January aims to eliminate Obamacare in the state. The law could become a model for other states fed up with the federal health-care law.

House Bill 3101, titled the “South Carolina Freedom of Health Care Protection Act,” passed the state House of Representatives last April by a 65-34 vote. The bill now heads to the GOP-controlled Senate with special-order priority, setting up the likelihood that South Carolina will become the first state to exempt citizens and businesses from all participation in the Affordable Care Act.

State Sen. Tom Davis, the bill’s sponsor who recently wrapped up study committee hearings for H3101 in Columbia, Charleston and other cities, says that the proposed legislation renders the Affordable Care Act void or inoperable through a handful of provisions.

Cop Kills Unarmed Man After Sarcastic Remark

A campus police offer in San Antonio has been placed on paid leave following the shooting of an unarmed student who directed a sarcastic remark toward the officer.

The incident took place Friday morning during a traffic stop close to the University of the Incarnate Word. KSAT News reports that 23-year-old honor student Robert Cameron Redus was shot to death by Cpl. Christopher Carter at around around 2 a.m.

After pulling Redus over for speeding, according to the police report, witnesses said that the officer emptied his gun into the student, without warning and despite the fact he was unarmed.

Liberals Want To Stop Men From Checking Out Women

In the progressive future, men will not be able to look at women’s bodies because that is a terrible thing to do — and science says so.

Researchers have offered a definitive report into the science of the male “objectifying gaze” in the December 2013 volume of “Sex Roles: A Journal of Research” (Volume 69, Issue 11-12, pp 557-570).

“Although objectification theory suggests that women frequently experience the objectifying gaze with many adverse consequences, there is scant research examining the nature and causes of the objectifying gaze for perceivers. The main purpose of this work was to examine the objectifying gaze toward women via eye tracking technology,” according to the abstract of “My Eyes Are Up Here: The Nature of the Objectifying Gaze Toward Women” by Sarah J. Gervais, Arianne M. Holland, and Michael D. Dodd.

MSNBC Host: 'Wealthy White Men' Try To Render Obama 'Inferior And Unequal'

In a new and strange defense of Obamacare, an MSNBC host accused “wealthy white men” of dreaming up the word as a derogatory term to slam President Obama and “put themselves above and apart from a black man, to render him inferior and unequal, and to diminish his accomplishments.”

Melissa Harris-Perry, in her opening commentary on her Sunday show, seems to be heading toward talking about the racially charged N-word before she reveals that the negative label she’s focused on is “Obamacare.”

The attack on the race of the president’s critics is one the White House has never endorsed or aired, though they were slow to adopt the term “Obamacare.” They’ve since shifted back to the “Affordable Care Act” as the popularity of the health insurance program has soured following its poor rollout.

South Carolina Sheriff Defies Obama: He Refuses To Lower Flags As A Tribute To Mandela

His reasoning makes sense, although I don’t see anything wrong with lowering the flag to half-mast to honor friends of the United States like Margaret Thatcher.

A South Carolina Sheriff is defying President Barack Obama’s order to lower flags to half-staff as a tribute to South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said he was defying Obama’s order because he thinks the honor of lowering flags should be reserved for fallen Americans.

“It’s just my simple opinion that the flag should only be lowered to half-staff for Americans who sacrificed for their country,” Clark told CNN affiliate WHNS.

An Interesting Comment Worthy Of A Post

Why is a valid license even required? Is it a requirement to be council president? If so, then Day does not qualify. What if I chose to take public transportation? Ride or walk to work? This is an admin job, not a transportation job.

Obama Wins "Lie Of The Year"

We already knew he was the biggest loser … now he’s the biggest liar as well.

U.S. President Barack Obama has won Politifact‘s “Lie of the Year” for the whopper he told about individual Americans’ health care plans.

Missed that one? Here you go …

“It was a catchy political pitch and a chance to calm nerves about his dramatic and complicated plan to bring historic change to America’s health insurance system,” writes Angie Drobnic Holan for Politifact. “But the promise was impossible to keep. So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obama’s breezy assurances were wrong.”

Of course Obama knew his “if you like your health care plan, you can keep it” promise was bunk years ago.
