Second Largest White In WMO History

Ocean City local Brian Roberts caught a huge 97.5 pound white marlin aboard the Shelly II. This is the second largest white marlin in White Marlin Open history! The first time Brian fished in the White Marlin Open, he was on a 28 foot boat that sank. This is a much better memory!

Solar Storm Headed For Earth Tonight; May Spawn Auroras

Night owls take note: A spectacular sky show of rippling auroras may be on tap for late Tuesday through early Wednesday, according to astrophysicists, and the phenomenon may be more widely visible than normal.

On Sunday cameras aboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured an eruption on the sun's surface that hurled tons of plasma—charged gas—directly toward our planet in an event called a coronal mass ejection. (See sun pictures taken by the solar observatory.)

Because it takes several days for such ionized clouds to reach Earth's atmosphere, the burst of charged particles should hit us tonight—and there's a chance it'll produce especially colorful auroras.

Auroras happen when energized particles from the sun interact with Earth's magnetic field. The particles flow down the field lines that run toward Earth's Poles, banging into atoms of atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen along the way.

The charged solar particles give Earth's atmospheric atoms an energy boost, which then gets released as light, producing the shimmering curtains of greens, reds, and other colors.

In the Northern Hemisphere, auroras are more commonly seen at high latitudes, such as the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia.

But explosions like Sunday's can spark geomagnetic storms that bring the show to slightly lower parts of the globe. These storms can also add a rippling effect to the sometimes static auroras.

State Police Investigate ATV/ Motor Vehicle Crash

Continued Resume:
Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit Tuesday August 3, 2010 responded to Coverdale Road between Mill Park Drive and Hastings Farm Road Bridgeville for a crash involving an ATV and a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The crash was reported at 12:12 p.m.

A 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt was southbound on Coverdale road. The ATV was traveling northbound Coverdale road along a brush line on the west edge of the roadway. (Same side as the Cobalt however heading N/B) The ATV emerged from behind the brush line and entered the southbound lane of Coverdale road directly into the path of the Chevrolet Cobalt. The intention of the ATV was to cross over the roadway to the east side of Coverdale road and onto a dirt path. The crash between the Chevrolet Cobalt and ATV caused the ATV to roll an undetermined number of times ejecting both driver and passenger. The driver of the ATV Michelle Prettyman-15 of Seaford died at Nanticoke Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger Matthew Duncan-10 also of Seaford was transported by State Police Helicopter to AI DuPont Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and is listed in critical condition.

Kratovil Comfortable In The Swamp

Will Frank Kratovil denounce the culture of corruption?

ANNAPOLIS
– As prominent Congressional Democrats Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters become embroiled in ethics scandals, Congressman Frank Kratovil needs to make a decision: Will he denounce the 'culture of corruption' in Washington or continue to silently support his embattled colleagues? According to Maryland Republican Party Chairman Audrey Scott, Kratovil’s silence is just another example of him siding with Washington over the Eastern Shore.

“You are either part of the solution, or you are part of the problem,” said Scott. “Kratovil has had nearly a week to speak out against the serious ethical charges facing Charlie Rangel but like so many of Kratovil’s decisions, he is siding with Washington instead of his constituents.”

On July 29, 2010, Rangel was charged by the House ethics committee with thirteen counts of violating House rules and federal laws. With charges pending, on July 28th, Rangel told Democrat colleagues to “drop me if you must,” yet Kratovil has chosen to remain silent.

“It is all about choices, Kratovil chose to vote against the wishes of the First District by supporting Cap-and-Trade and the Stimulus, now he is choosing to stay mum while Democrat leaders face serious charges. Serious enough to be heard by a jury,” Scott said. “If Kratovil was the independent voice he claims to be, he would speak out against the charges facing his colleagues instead of remaining silent on Nancy Pelosi’s failed promises to ‘drain the swamp.’”

“‘Drain the swamp’ means to turn this Congress into the most honest and open Congress in history. That's my pledge — that is what I intend to do,’ Pelosi stated in an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams.” (Brian Williams, “Rep. Pelosi poised to make history”, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams 11/08/2006),

CBO Stimulus Estimate: $75 Billion Mistake?

Some 18 months after Congress passed the Obama administration's record stimulus spending package, media outlets still cannot agree on how much the program actually costs. In fact, they're not even close.

The estimates provided by various news outlets vary by as much as $75 billion.

Initially, the Congressional Budget Office assessed the program's cost at $787 billion. But 11 months later, in January 2010, the CBO revised that cost estimate upward to $862 billion, blaming higher-than-expected unemployment for the increase.

It seems some news outlets never got the CBO's memo, however. CNN, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, and The New York Times all continue to use the lesser figure in their reports.

Alan Viard, who writes the Enterprise Blog for the American Enterprise Institute, says some media "inexplicably cling" to the incorrect estimate. He praises The Wall Street Journal's consistent use of the higher number, but is dismayed by how often the wrong number appears in other media.

RSC Update

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently made a vow to a large gathering of liberal activists that should have you concerned.

“Frustration with the Democratic Party was a major theme during the four-day event, where progressives voiced their loss of patience with those in power for not doing enough to make major policy changes. … ‘We’re going to have to have a lame-duck session,’ Reid promised. ‘So we’re not giving up.’”

The liberals Senator Reid was talking to do not think ObamaCare’s unconstitutional mandate to buy insurance went far enough. They do not think the failed $862 billion stimulus created a large enough deficit. They do not think Democrats have done enough to “change” America into an economically and militarily weak cradle-to-grave welfare state. They want more – and Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi are planning to give it to them in a lame duck session of Congress.

But here’s the catch – most Americans have had more than enough. These Americans are tired of being ignored and are ready to register their dissatisfaction at the voting booth in November. That’s why Pelosi and Reid have delayed dealing with a number of far-reaching and controversial issues until a post-election lame duck session. They know Americans don’t support the tax hikes, spending deficits, and other job-killing policy prescriptions Democrats want to enact. By holding off until a lame duck session, they hope to avoid an even greater backlash.

This is not how the Founders intended the federal government to function. Our republic is based on those who govern having the consent of the governed. That is why I went down to the House floor last Thursday and offered a privileged resolution calling on Democrats to stop ignoring the will of the people and pledge not to hold a lame duck session this year except in the case of an unforeseen, sudden emergency requiring immediate action from Congress.

Instead of taking a clear position on this important question, Speaker Pelosi’s Democrats delayed the vote and then left town for a six-week summer recess. When Congress returns in September, I will once again offer this resolution and give my colleagues another chance to show if they support the use of a lame duck session to override the will of the American people. Americans should know where their Representatives stand on the issues before going into the voting booth.

House Republicans know we must restore Americans’ faith in their elected Representatives by listening when you speak. There is no better way to make your voice heard than via AmericaSpeakingOut.com. I encourage you to read through the solutions, draft your own, and show your support.

Sincerely,

Congressman Tom Price
Chairman, Republican Study Committee

Is Jim Ireton’s Slumlord Plan DOA?

It was Salisbury mayor Jim Ireton’s number one campaign promise.  It took 14 months to deliver.  Ireton promises that it will help decrease crime and blight.  Is Ireton’s new plan to regulate the city’s landlords thoughtful policy or simply a political ploy for next spring’s District 2 city council elections?

Personally, I would speculate that it is an attempt to enact a meaningful policy.  There is also no doubt that it is a political ploy.

One day Ireton is all but kissing Louise Smith’s ass in front of the courthouse.  Another he is threatening her on video.  SAPOA already owns council members Shanie Shields and Gary Comegys.  Smith seems to have been merely renting her vote to them.  With a frontal attack by Ireton, where does he expect Smith to run to?  She has all but officially announced her re-election bid.

Less than 24 hours out of the wrapper, my bet is that Ireton’s proposal will be DOA; or so heavily amended to suit SAPOA that he’ll have to veto it.  NEXT – Smith runs with open arms to Kris Adams and the electioneering thugery she so ham handedly exhibited during Ireton’s run for mayor.  Buckle up Jim – it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Pending Home Sales Sank 2.6 Percent In June

Weak economy and tight lending standards kept home buyers away

WASHINGTON
— The number of buyers who signed contracts to purchase homes dropped in June, as the weak U.S. economy and tight lending standards kept consumers away from the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors said Tuesday that its seasonally adjusted index of sales agreements for previously occupied homes dipped 2.6 percent to a reading of 75.7.

That was the lowest on records dating back to 2001 and down nearly 19 percent from the same month a year earlier. The index has fallen by more than 40 percent from its peak in April 2005.

May's reading was revised slightly downward to 77.7. Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected the index would rise to 78.1.

The index provides an early measure of sales activity because there is usually a one- to two-month lag between a sales contract and a completed deal.

BREAKING NEWS: Panel Clears Way For Mosque Near Ground Zero

Sarah Palin, others argue the mosque would disrespect the memory of Sept. 11 victims

NEW YORK — A contentious plan for a mosque near the World Trade Center site got a boost Tuesday as New York City's landmarks panel voted to allow the demolition of the building that the mosque would replace.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission's decision allows organizers to transform the 152-year-old building into an Islamic community center blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Some national politicians, including former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and the Anti-Defamation League have come out in recent weeks against plans for the mosque, saying it disrespects the memory of Sept. 11 victims.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has supported the mosque.

The commission voted 9-0 against granting landmark status to the building. Commissioners said the building didn't meet historic criteria to qualify as a landmark.

Group: Mosque will be center for moderate voices
If built, the mosque will be part of an Islamic community center to be operated by a group called the Cordoba Initiative, which says the center will be a space for moderate Muslim voices.

The commission's job was to determine whether the building is architecturally important enough to preserve, not to consider the merits of the proposed mosque.

Panthers Probe Heats Up Panel

The federal government's dismissal of voter intimidation charges against the New Black Panther Party has not only stirred debate at the national level and among various media outlets, but created a firestorm within the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which has announced a separate investigation of the matter.

In a statement, five Republican and independent commission members — describing themselves as "conservative-leaning colleagues" — took issue with comments by Commission Vice Chairman Abigail Thernstrom, also a Republican appointee, who called the New Black Panther Party probe "politically motivated."

"Our fellow member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Abigail Thernstrom, has asserted in various media outlets that the commission's investigation into the Justice Department's handling of the New Black Panther Party matter is a politically-motivated attempt to damage President Obama," the five said in the statement.

"Not only is this accusation baseless, it deflects attention from the serious allegations of wrongdoing within the Department of Justice both in connection with the New Black Panther Party case and more broadly," it said.

Mrs. Thernstrom told Politico last month that the commission's investigation "doesn't have anything to do with the Black Panthers; this has to do with their fantasies about how they could use this issue to topple" the Obama administration. She said her fellow conservatives on the commission "had this wild notion they could bring Eric Holder down and really damage the president."

The statement issued Thursday was signed by Republican members Gerald A. Reynolds, assistant general counsel at the Kansas City Power & Light Co., who serves as chairman; Peter N. Kirsanow, a partner at the Cleveland law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Arnoff; and Ashley L. Taylor, a partner at the Richmond law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP; and independent appointees Gail Heriot, a law professor at the University of San Diego, and Todd F. Gaziano, senior fellow in legal studies at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

"We decline to comment here on Commissioner Thernstrom's motives for making these statements or for any other votes or positions she's taken recently," the statement said, adding that her comments were "seized by some to diminish the importance and credibility of the investigation."

Wicomico County Representatives Vow To Help West Side Of County

In a packed meeting with more than 150 local Bivalve area residents, Councilwoman Stevie Prettyman, County Executive Rick Pollitt, Sheriff Mike Lewis and other County Representatives openly discussed crime and parking on Cove Road.

Several citizens from the area stood up and spoke of their disgust of issues Sheriff Mike Lewis said, "Oh, we're well aware of the problem". In fact, Sheriff Lewis, (and others) could name pretty much every person causing the crime problems. The problem, they're juveniles and "the juvenile system is broken," said Sheriff Lewis.

Another major topic, (besides crime) is the parking issues on Cove Road, near the beach. No sooner does the County put up No Parking signs, someone comes along and steals them. One of the biggest things I learned last night was, even though they can place No Parking signs up, it only creates a $25.00 fine. However, just because there's a No Parking sign there, it does not allow the Sheriff's Department to tow a vehicle. That actually takes more legislation. The County Council would have to adopt a new resolution and send it off to the State. If the state approves it, then the County would have to vote it into law and the towing can begin.

However, there's another problem. How much money can a towing company make traveling all the way from Salisbury to that area and pick up a vehicle. On top of that, will the vehicle still be there by the time they are dispatched all the way out there.

One of the solutions the County Council will consider is perhaps passing new legislation to close ALL parking on both sides of the road. Again, without the state backing a tow away zone, the only fine you'll get is $25.00 in the mean time.

Towards the end of the meeting Councilwoman Prettyman asked for a raise of hands from those citizens who'd be willing to participate in a community crime watch. Well, it's pretty clear from the image above that these citizens have had enough.

The meeting in my opinion was well worth the drive to visit. County Executive Rick Pollitt asked those in attendance if they had ever heard of the Wicomico Neighborhood Congress. To my amazement, 90%+ had no clue what he was talking about. I mention this because I'd like all our readers to realize, while we may not have been aware of just how bad crime has risen in their neck of the woods, citizens there had no idea the resources that are provided and more communication needs to be encouraged.

The Neighborhood Congress certainly will not resolve their immediate problems but having a large group expressing issues from all areas of the County and sharing/learning other means of resolutions is a step in the right direction. This includes how to run a successful community crime watch as well.

In closing, Sheriff Lewis will be holding an internal meeting this morning to discuss how they can better tackle the issues and concerns of the west side residents. One thing is for sure. When Sheriff Lewis says he's going to do something, you can expect something to be done right away.

A Letter To The Editor

Bill Satterfield's piece [recently published in the Daily Times] highlights poultry companies' steps towards Environmental stewardship. Satterfield responded to Environment Maryland's recent petition, signed by 55 farmers and others in Maryland's agriculture industry, urging Gov. O'Malley to hold chicken companies more accountable for their animals' manure.

We organized this petition because we want a vibrant, healthy agriculture industry as well as a healthy, restored Chesapeake Bay. Farmers properly managing their land today are proof that farming can be both environmentally sustainable and economically profitable.

Satterfield listed poultry companies' voluntary clean-up measures, which are indeed probably improving our water quality. But the question is not, "are these chicken companies doing anything?" The question is: "Are they doing enough? And if not, what else needs to be done?"

Satterfield wrote: "EPA data show that agriculture, including the chicken industry, is making progress toward reaching 2010 pollution reduction goals." This is misleading. The year 2010 is right now, and we have not reached our goals. According to the EPA, agriculture has met 52 percent of nitrogen and 50 percent of phosphorus reduction goals, baywide. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus cause the bay's dead zones.

Satterfield's listed measures help, but history shows they're not enough. That's clear in the EPA's data, as well as in soil data on the Eastern Shore.

Manure is useful, but there's too much of it. Soil can soak up a certain amount of phosphorus contained in the manure. But when manure is over-applied, phosphorus can get into our water. According to Water Stewardship Inc., four Maryland counties with intensive poultry operations produce more than 300,000 tons of excess manure, creating more than 4,000 tons more phosphorus every year than localcrops can absorb.

Obviously agriculture is not the only pollution source. To reach our goals, we need to curb pollution from all sectors -- including urban lawns,
sewage treatment plants and other sources.

The only real way to restore the bay is for everyone to pay their fair share to clean up. We organized this petition because Perdue and Tyson are not paying their fair share and are not held sufficiently accountable. The companies own the chickens but not the chicken manure. Therefore, they have no concrete obligation to help growers manage excess manure.

If the poultry companies were liable for their animals' manure, they would have a real incentive to better assist their growers in managing it. That would help level the playing field for farmers who are already doing the right thing. The state could
also require poultry companies to help finance best management practices on farms, or to provide funding for possible biomass energy projects.

If we are to accelerate our lagging bay restoration efforts and also have a more equitable agriculture industry in Maryland, poultry companies should pay their fair share to clean up our water.

Illegal Immigrant Who Killed Nun In Accident Was Released By Feds

The Virginia man suspected in a drunken-driving crash that killed a Catholic nun in Prince William County this weekend is an illegal immigrant and repeat offender who was awaiting deportation and who federal immigration authorities had released pending further proceedings, police said Monday.

Carlos Montano, a county resident, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and drunken driving. Mr. Montano had been arrested two other times on drunken-driving charges, and on at least one of those occasions county police reported him to federal authorities.

"We have determined that he is in the country illegally. He has been arrested by Prince William County Police in the past," said police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

He said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was notified at the time of one of those arrests. "At the time of this incident, the accident yesterday, he was in the deportation process and was out on his recognizance for court proceedings."

The crash at around 8:30 Sunday morning killed Sister Denise Mosier and injured two other nuns as they were driving to a retreat at the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow, Va. The two injured nuns were in critical but stable condition late Monday, according to St. Gertrude High School in Richmond run by the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia.

"I have been saying for months now that this administration's new policy of concentrating almost solely on 'criminal aliens,' and not enforcing the laws by deporting known illegal aliens, would have devastating consequences. Now, we see the tragic results this 'virtual amnesty' policy of the Obama administration has caused," said Rep. Harold Rogers of Kentucky, the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations homeland security subcommittee.

Conservative Group Launches Summer School For Political Activists

A conservative group has unveiled a series of online tutorials designed to train conservative and Tea Party activists ahead of the summer Congressional recess and November elections.

Liberty Central -- founded by Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas – is partnering with the Leadership Institute (LI), the organization founded by long-time conservative activist Morton Blackwell, to produce the training videos and accompanying Web site, LibertyCentralTraining.org.

In a memo obtained by CNSNews.com, Liberty Central told its members that August, when Congress is in recess, is “accountability month.” The group is urging conservatives to lobby their elected representatives in a repeat of last summer’s contentious town hall meetings, where legislators faced an unexpected surge of voter displeasure.

“August has arrived, which means that we are about to kick off our first annual “August is Accountability Month” project,” the memo read. “Members of Congress are about to leave Washington, D.C., for their home districts, and it’s important that we let them know what we’re thinking and make sure they face another tough August recess.

“We must hold our Senators and Representatives accountable and asking them questions, and holding events during August to make them defend their votes is a great way to do this!”

The Web site’s opening video, narrated by conservative author Herman Cain, offers viewers a stark choice.

“Will American be self governed according to the truth of a document that begins with three simple words; ‘We the people,’ or will we be ruled by a robust, elitist government our founders would never recognize? Self-governed or ruled? That’s what we as ordinary citizens must decide,” Cain says in the video.

CASA de Maryland Expands Its Political Advocacy Arm

CASA de Maryland has decided to start a political action committee so it can endorse pro-Hispanic candidates who promise to defend its politically untouchable stream of public funds. CASA has been using the money to beat back any citizen challenges to Maryland's current sanctuary status.

The CASA in Action PAC will build upon CASA's past success in making Maryland taxpayers pay to watch their state and local officials fall all over each other to provide the most services to people with no legal right to be in the United States. So this latest venture into partisan politics is hardly new. The PAC just makes it official.

Since 2005, the open-borders group has hauled in at least $7.6 million in the form of outright subsidies, community development tax credits, government-issued bonds, grants and heavens knows what else. It's used tax dollars to fund day laborer sites, organize a protest against Arizona's new immigration law, and even file a lawsuit against a Frederick County sheriff for arresting a woman wanted on a deportation warrant.

Even while they were staring at a $2 billion budget deficit earlier this year, state legislators defeated, by a lopsided vote of 47-89, an amendment offered by House Minority Leader Anthony O'Donnell, R-Calvert, to strip CASA of yet another $200,000 the group was allocated from the state's capital budget.

CASA in Action has already raised $45,000 from 5,000 dues-paying members, according to Kim Propeack, director of community organizing and political action. CASA organizers say they hope to harness the "enormous unrealized potential of the Latino vote" in Maryland, where, thanks in large part to political pressure from CASA, local elections officials cannot demand proof of citizenship and election judges cannot even demand to see a voter's ID.

The PAC's current agenda includes issuing Maryland driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, fighting efforts to make English the official state language, lobbying for more funding for nonprofits like CASA, and stopping raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

Evidence of CASA's political clout was recently on display. Despite deep budget cuts that forced some county employees to take unpaid furloughs, the Hyattsville-based group was miraculously spared.

It received $2.1 million from local governments ($1.3 million from Montgomery County alone) even though its other sources of revenue include deep-pocketed billionaire George Soros' Open Society Institute and Citgo, Venezeula's state-owned oil company.

Oops! Obama Mama Passport 'Destroyed'

Responding to a Freedom of Information Act request, the State Department has released passport records of Stanley Ann Dunham, President Obama's mother – but records for the years surrounding Obama's 1961 birth are missing.

The State Department claims a 1980s General Services Administration directive resulted in the destruction of many passport applications and other "non-vital" passport records, including Dunham's 1965 passport application and any other passports she may have applied for or held prior to 1965.

Destroyed, then, would also be any records shedding light on whether Dunham did or did not travel out of the country around the time of Barack Obama's birth.

The claim made in the FOIA response letter that many passport records were destroyed during the 1980s comes despite a statement on the State Department website that Passport Services maintains U.S. passport records for passports issued from 1925 to the present.

The records released, however, contain interesting tidbits of new information about Obama's mother, including the odd listing of two different dates and locations for her marriage to Obama's Indonesian stepfather, Lolo Soetoro.

In the released documents Dunham listed both March 15, 1965, in Molokai, Hawaii, and March 5, 1964, in Maui, Hawaii, as the dates and places of her marriage.

Dunham later divorced Lolo Soetoro in Hawaii. The divorce decree took effect Nov. 5, 1980, but the divorce papers do not list the date of the marriage.

No marriage certificate between Dunham and Soetoro has yet publicly surfaced, but a released application to amend Dunham's 1965 passport to her married name Stanley Ann Soetoro includes a checked box indicating a passport officer had seen the marriage certificate.

EPA To Crack Down On Farm Dust?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering a crackdown on farm dust, so senators have signed a letter addressing their concerns on the possible regulations.

The letter dated July 23 to the EPA states, "If approved, would establish the most stringent and unparalleled regulation of dust in our nation's history." It further states, "We respect efforts for a clean and healthy environment, but not at the expense of common sense. These identified levels will be extremely burdensome for farmers and livestock producers to attain. Whether its livestock kicking up dust, soybeans being combined on a dry day in the fall, or driving a car down the gravel road, dust is a naturally occurring event."

"It's plain common sense, we don't want to do anything detrimental," said farmer Curtis Roberts. "If the dust is detrimental to us, it's going to be to everybody. We're not going to do anything to hurt ourselves or our farm.

"Anytime you work ground, you're going to have dust. I don't know how they'll regulate it," Roberts said. "The regulations are going to put us down and keep us from doing things we need to be doing because of the EPA."

Will Residential Sprinkler Systems Bankrupt Builders

Did you know the city of Salisbury is about to pass new codes requiring fire sprinklers in new single-family homes?

Included in the new codes will be a requirement for updates to an entire home when additions are built on existing homes.

I implore the city not to adopt requirements for automatic sprinkler systems in the middle of the most horrific recession we have been in during 62 years of my living on this Earth. We cannot sell homes now of a rate of more than a couple per year. We cannot compete with foreclosure home sales.

The banks have tightened lending practices -- at the Fed's insistence -- to a point where few qualify for $150,000-$175,000 units. This, by the way, is a price the city of Salisbury approved as affordable housing.

With existing codes in place and fees (to the tune of $20,000 per housing unit), builders and housing development in the city of Salisbury are on the brink of extinction.

Tight Race Should Focus On The Past

After the fourth published poll showed Martin O’Malley and Bob Ehrlich a few percentage points apart, Democrats and the O’Malley campaign had to make the best of the obvious.

“It's gonna be tight,” said Democratic Party Chair Susan Turnbull in an e-mailed fundraising letter last week. “We’ve known all along that the governor’s race was going to be close. There will be many polls between now and November to prove it.”

O’Malley campaign manager Tom Russell, making a similar appeal for money said: “We've seen a number of polls on our race in the last few weeks. Every one of them tells us that this race will be close.”

American Consumers Embrace The New Abnormal

They're worried about their finances but still buying $3 lattes and iPhones

In March, Ralph Ronzio went to a warehouse in a seedy part of Orange County, Calif., and watched a guy auction off his condo for half what he'd paid for it. Ronzio had bought the place for $329,000 in 2005, when he moved to Southern California from Rhode Island to take a job at a data-storage company. It was the first place he'd ever owned. "It was totally my bachelor pad," he says. "Not much inside other than the usual leather couch and the big screen TV. My fiancée made me sell the couch."

That wasn't the only thing that changed when Ronzio got engaged. His fiancée had two young children, and there wasn't enough room in the condo for all four of them. So last year, Ronzio bought a house nine miles away and they all moved in. He figured he could rent the condo and cover his costs. He figured wrong.

U.S. economy: Growth slows as consumer spending decelerates The boomers stop buying The leaner baby boomer economy The more he thought about the money he was losing, the more it stressed him out. Finally, Ronzio enlisted the help of a firm called You Walk Away and did exactly that from the remaining $319,000 on his condo mortgage. When the bank foreclosed, he says he felt an enormous sense of relief. He also had more cash. He and his fiancée took the kids to Disneyland. Ronzio, 31, gave himself a treat as well. "I bought myself an iPad," he says.

It used to be that someone like Ralph Ronzio could be fairly certain of the outcome when spending a few hundred thousand dollars on real estate. Housing prices were headed in only one direction. You could surf the boom and borrow against your home equity to pay for all manner of splurges — a vacation, a flat-screen TV, the latest Apple gadget. It may have looked like a lot of debt on paper, but considering that housing prices nearly doubled from 1999 to 2006, there was always an escape hatch: Sell your house and make enough money to pay it all back.

That was the old normal. Last year, Mohamed El-Erian, CEO of PIMCO, the influential bond shop, declared a "new normal," a global realignment in which the U.S. consumer, no longer a hungry monster, became cautious and subdued.

FDA Declares Gulf Seafood Safe To Eat

Results based on human smell tests, but some critics want more information

VENICE, La.
— Seafood from some parts of the oil-fouled Gulf of Mexico has been declared safe to eat by the government, based in part on human smell tests. But even some Gulf fishermen are questioning whether the fish and shrimp are OK to feed to their own families.

Some are turning up their noses at the smell tests — in which inspectors sniff seafood for chemical odors — and are demanding more thorough testing to reassure the buying public about the effects of the oil and the dispersants used to fight the slick.

The Combustion Engine Gets Downsized

EcoMotors promises 50 percent better mileage at a low cost

Retired Ford (F) engineer John Coletti got a call in 2007 from Vinod Khosla, the Silicon Valley venture capitalist. Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, wanted advice on a new engine technology in which he was considering investing. A mutual friend suggested he contact Coletti, who had served as the chief of Ford's performance division. Coletti was skeptical that the design in question could deliver a promised 50 percent improvement in fuel economy. "Any time you hear about a new engine technology, you look for the Achilles' heel," the engineer said.

He pored over the EcoMotors International opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder (OPOC) engine. To his surprise, he concluded that it could perform as advertised. Coletti joined the company as president and chief operating officer in February 2008. Khosla and Microsoft (MSFT) founder Bill Gates were impressed, too, and together have invested $34 million in EcoMotors. They are attracted by a motor that, in theory, would allow a large pickup to achieve 27 miles per gallon. The company plans to license the technology to carmakers that would make their own OPOC engines, or manufacture and sell the engines through joint ventures.

Traditional engines have one piston per cylinder; EcoMotors' version has two. The design saves space and weight, allowing for a 95-pound engine that is one-third the heft of a small, conventional four-cylinder motor and 15 percent to 19 percent more efficient. Designed by Peter Hofbauer, a former Volkswagen engineer and founder of EcoMotors, the small, modular engines can be hooked together to power autos of different sizes. A pair would yield a 150-horsepower motor suitable for a midsize car like a Toyota (TM) Camry. When the car is coasting, one of the engines shuts down, delivering a 50 percent boost in fuel economy. That's a similar efficiency gain to what a hybrid gets, only EcoMotors says its model is less expensive. An OPOC engine will add roughly $600 to $900 to the cost of a vehicle, compared with an extra $3,000 for a hybrid, according to Don Runkle, chief executive officer of EcoMotors. Says Coletti: "This technology is disruptive to the industry."

New ID Theft Targets Kids' SS Numbers

The latest form of identity theft doesn't depend on stealing your Social Security number. Now thieves are targeting your kid's number long before the little one even has a bank account.

Hundreds of online businesses are using computers to find dormant Social Security numbers - usually those assigned to children who don't use them - then selling those numbers under another name to help people establish phony credit and run up huge debts they will never pay off.

Authorities say the scheme could pose a new threat to the nation's credit system. Because the numbers exist in a legal gray area, federal investigators have not figured out a way to prosecute the people involved.

"If people are obtaining enough credit by fraud, we're back to another financial collapse," said Linda Marshall, an assistant U.S. attorney in Kansas City. "We tend to talk about it as the next wave."

The sellers get around the law by not referring to Social Security numbers. Instead, just as someone might pay for an escort service instead of a prostitute, they refer to CPNs - for credit profile, credit protection or credit privacy numbers.

Julia Jensen, an FBI agent in Kansas City, discovered the scheme while investigating a mortgage-fraud case. She has given presentations to lenders across the Kansas City area to show them how easy it is to create a false credit score using these numbers.

"The back door is wide open," she said. "We're trying to get lenders to understand the risks."

It's not clear how widespread the fraud is, mostly because the scheme is difficult to detect and practiced by fly-by-night businesses.

But the deception is emerging as millions of Americans watch their credit scores sink to new lows. Figures from April show that 25.5 percent of consumers - nearly 43.4 million people - now have a credit score of 599 or below, marking them as poor risks for lenders. They will have trouble getting credit cards, auto loans or mortgages under the tighter lending standards banks now use.

The scheme works like this:

Rotten Economy Might Mean Big Savings On Airfare This Fall, If You Can Afford To Travel

Travel guru Christopher Elliott thinks that airfare prices could drop significantly this fall, thanks to a double-dip recession and general economic misery. So far prices for car rentals and cruise packages are going up, but Elliott says he's hearing from travelers and travel companies about "dramatic, unexpected bargains" and "rates ... on par with last year's record-low prices" when it comes to flights.

Virginia AG Rules Officers Can Check Immigration Status, Aren't Required

Virginia's top prosecutor, after issuing a legal opinion that seemed to align his state with Arizona in the battle over local immigration enforcement, told Fox News on Monday that the two states' policies aren't a perfect match.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued a legal opinion Friday saying state law enforcement officers are allowed to check the immigration status of anyone "stopped or arrested."
"It is my opinion that Virginia law enforcement officers, including conservation officers may, like Arizona police officers, inquire into the immigration status of persons stopped or arrested," he wrote.

But in an interview with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, Cuccinelli underscored that in Virginia pursuing immigration offenses is up to the officers -- not required, as it is under Arizona's controversial immigration law.

"We are not mandating to our law enforcement that they make these inquiries on every stop," Cuccinelli said, noting that Arizona's law requires officers to check the immigration status of anyone stopped for other reasons when there is reasonable suspicion that they are in the country illegally.

Muslim Day At Six Flags 09/11 Weekend

Muslim Day at Six Flags! Wow!
By Fred DeRuvo

Hey Kids, did you know that the folks at Six Flags are pulling out all the stops to create a Muslim Day at their parks? Wow!

That's right, tell Mom and Dad that you want to head over to the nearest Six Flags Amusement Park to enjoy Muslim Day and guess what? It's going to happen this year on 9/12 - wow, missed 9/11 by THAT much!

My first question is WHY would ANY amusement park feel the need to have special days that celebrate any particular religion? Moreover, though I see a Catholic Family day, I do not see anything labeled "Christian Day." That would probably be intolerant.

At any rate, if you missed it, the day of this year's Muslim Day is only one day AFTER the anniversary of the original 9/11 in which Muslim terrorists flew planes into the WTC buildings. Over 3,000 people were killed (SACRIFICED) by violent members of the Islamic faith. While it is not ON 9/11, it is being advertised as the weekend of 9/11.

So a country that was founded in biblical principles (not Qur'anic principles) now has companies pointedly offering special days for those within the Islamic faith who apparently need to be recognized for all that they gave to this country during its founding years and through to today.

There is something drastically wrong with the way the world is going and we all know where it's heading. Well, if you read and understand Scripture in its plain and normal (literal) sense.

The tragedy is that too many are doing their level best to placate individuals who hate this country. The Muslims who are NOT violent (like their jihadist counterparts) are not a threat to this country, but they are also not a DETERRENT to the more violent members of Islam. They simply either get out of the way, or remain in the shadows. The violent members of Islam are also not taken in by the attempts of companies like Six Flags to be placated.

If it isn't a demand for a mosque at Ground Zero, or now Muslim Day at Six Flags on the weekend of 9/11 anniversary, Muslims continue to push their agenda on the American people. They are not only pushing their agenda, but people and companies are bending over backwards in order to "respect" the Islamic faith. This means that employees of Six Flags are required to wear long pants instead of shorts, regardless of the temperature. Bare legs may be offensive to Muslims. I wonder if they shower in the dark.

For violent Islamic jihadists, there is no such thing as being placated. Will people ever learn? Will companies ever understand? Not until it is way too late.

Facts checked and confirmed. Also, for more information http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2010/07/six-flags-hosts-muslim-brotherhoods-family-day-on-september-12th.html

The HAWK Has Come To Delaware!

DelDOT Prepares to Premier New Type of Traffic Signal

Newark
-- As summer begins to draw to a close and classes are just around the corner for students at the University of Delaware in Newark, those taking agricultural classes on the Webb Farm will return to the campus to find a new kind of traffic signal. One meant to make it easier and safer for students, faculty members, and visitors to cross Route 72 at Farm/Webb Lane. The signal is a High-intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) and is being installed as a joint partnership between the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and the University of Delaware's College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. The location is the first in the state to be outfitted with this new type of signal.

"This traffic signal is unique," said Mark Luszcz, Assistant Chief Traffic Engineer with DelDOT. "These signals were developed to be used at locations that do not meet the criteria for a traditional traffic signal. They provide a reasonably safe way for pedestrians to cross the roadway, while being less disruptive to traffic."

The HAWK system, originally developed by the City of Tucson, Arizona, is only activated when a pedestrian approaches the signal and presses a button, like they would at a traditional signalized crosswalk. Once it is activated, the signal will go through a series of stages that will stop traffic long enough for pedestrians to safely cross the roadway. Traffic will then be allowed to proceed and the signal will reset itself until activated again. When the signal is not active, it will be dark to allow traffic to move freely.

"We realize that there will be a learning curve with this system since it is new to the citizens of Delaware," said Luszcz. "We have been working with the University of Delaware to get the word out to their students before the school year begins, as well as to citizens who travel the road."

DelDOT began installing the system in July and is tentatively scheduled to be activated on Friday, August 6. Citizens will also notice new informational signs as they approach the intersection, which alert them to the presence of the new signal.

"This new type of signal is another tool that we can use to ensure the safety of our citizens as they cross our roadways at intersections that would traditionally be outfitted with only a flashing yellow beacon or a crosswalk without a traffic signal," said DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks. "This system has been tested and proven to be highly effective in numerous jurisdictions throughout the United States," said Wicks, "and we are happy to be bringing it to Delaware."
