Better enforcement is needed in order to reduce illegal discharges of high levels of nitrogen into the Chesapeake Bay, according to a new report released by the Environmental Integrity Project.
The report said nitrogen discharges dropped significantly from Virginia, West Virginia, the District and Columbia and Pennsylvania between 2011 and 2012, but increased in Delaware, New York and Maryland.
The report blames industrial and wastewater treatment facilities for the problems.
"2012 progress reducing industrial and municipal pollution in key Chesapeake Bay states is encouraging, but we need to do more if we want to stay on track and meet 2017 goals," said EIP Attorney Tarah Heinzen. "Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution continues to degrade the water quality and fisheries of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries each year. All of the Bay states must focus on reducing these discharges and get serious about stopping illegal discharges."
In Maryland, the largest violator is the City of Salisbury Wastewater Treatment Plant. It's followed by three other plants in Western Maryland.

Didn't they just spend a gozillion dollars on that? I'd say someone got their pockets lined!
YOU elected him, allegedly. What say you now Chuck Cook?
Now that is something to hang your hat on! Great job "Good Old Boy Network"!
Thanks Joe for keeping us citizens informed about the wastewater plant and other goings on in Salisbury. If it were'nt for you we would'nt know about all our tax dollars being wasted.
People somtimes forget that when that plant was built it had been approved by the Maryland Department of the Environment prior to funding and construction. Do you think they might share some of the blame for this fiasco, I doubt it.
YAAAAAA!!!!! We're number 1 again!!!
Where's the outrage from our liberal mayor? After all wasn't he all about cleaning up the Wicomico River and the environment? I guess he has more important personal things to do.
Can't wait for the environmentalist
spin on this post. I thought the
farmers were the problem!
They have got to forbid the use of chicken s&*t as fertilizer, truck it to New Jersey, they have the places for it, the whole state is a Landfill.
Secretary Hance plans to store excess chicken manure on public
land. OK lets truck it to
Annapolis--the Governor's mansion!
That's public land isn't it
The flush tax doubled for people with septic tanks…that makes sense. Another reason to leave MD.
Why isn't the mayor being Arrested for fudging the numbers????????????????????????????????
Question for you JOE....
IF Salisbury Waste can't handle the pooh they get now with out dumping it in the Wicomico... How are they going to handle the new growth Downtown. Did they improve the waste water system yet?
Just curious, if anyone thought of this?
I call BS on this one. Granted the city of Salisbury is probably one of the worst offenders in the state for adding pollution to the Wicomico river, but the tidal swings don't make it far enough up the river (thank heavens) to actually flush all that sewage out of there! Otherwise the bay would be destroyed!
anonymous 10:34, It Can't!
Have ALL of you ever wondered why certain and specific businesses started packing up and leaving Salisbury, including when Barrie Tilghman was Mayor?
Had you ever noticed how these businesses were some of the highest water and sewer users in the City?
They didn't have the proper capacity then, what makes you think the new FAILING $100,000,000.00+ system would make anything better.
Salisbury was redesigned many years ago because of the University. Special interests saw what was ahead for Salisbury and they concentrated and created laws specifically to adjust for a future COLLEGE TOWN and College Housing. They needed, (and still do need) the larger users to go away so they can create more student housing. They put all their eggs into one basket.
Hence all the fast food joints and so forth.
As for Downtown, it's going to be a MESS. I love how all of Jim's buddies are now coming forward saying the Downtown is just a PROPOSAL and NOTHING has been sold yet. That's how these Liberals get started. oh, it's only a proposal. Yeah, right. The citizens are going to catch on. The citizens are going to ultimately figure out that your leader and former leaders USED you, all the while knowing down the road your homes won't be worth squat and you'll sell them off to the Landlords for next to nothing.
Your Leaders never thought on line colleges would take over these Universities in years to come. Heck, it worked for the Chief of the Salisbury Fire Department and other Department Heads in the City.
So yes, I've been thinking about it for many years now. The question now is, ARE YOU LISTENING?
And these are the same people that tell me what time of the year I can fertilize my yard?
Barrie Tilghman, Mike Dunn, Gary Comegys, Lynn Cathcart, the MDE...they should pay for everything.
Enviromentalists are nowhere to be found because all they do is party on your tax dollars.
"Barrie Tilghman, Mike Dunn, Gary Comegys, Lynn Cathcart, the MDE...they should pay for everything."
Don't forget Paul Wilber, who is STILL being paid by the taxpayers for continuing WWTP lawsuits.
Somebody please ask why they don't address the problem of stormwater infiltrating the sewer system. The only time they have problems is when we get heavy rain. Delmar has this problem too. Maybe someone knows.

I have been following your blog for a long time and one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the Salisbury Fire Department. Every time you mention that department and it's chosen department head the hair on my back stands up. I don't even know how you can call Rick Hoppes our Fire Chief. I looked up where you said his degree came from and there is a lot of sites on google that question whether Columbia Southern University is a real college. Overwhelming evidence says it is not Regionally Accredited school meaning most colleges and employers won't accept it. FAKE and we tax payers footed his bill and that is stealing from the taxpayers. Jim Ireton knew it and allowed it. Why do something online from a fake school when there are accredited online schools and numerous brick and mortar schools in our area. He is a lazy criminal if you ask me.
anonymous 6:01, Thank You for your comment. Let me say this. ONLY Salisbury News has brought up and or challenged this On Line Degree. Mayor Ireton chose to accept it, not Joe Albero.
All you've got to do is sail down the Wicomico River and back to judge the amount of pollution in it. For, when you get back you'll have to scrub all of the crud off your boat.
Didn't the current mayor say he was going to clean up the river? When will the bs of the previous councils go away?
in my personal opinion.... There should be NO ONLINE colleges. Or, all tests should have to be taken at the college and you should prove and provide ID that you are taking the test.
How can a college possibly know that you are doing the work on-line. How freaking stupid is that. ALL on-line colleges should be a part of accredited colleges i.e. University Maryland, Salisbury University. All persons taking the courses should live close enough to college to be able to be called in at any point for progress meetings.
Just saying, all other on-line colleges are SCAMS.
