OC considers raising tram fare to pay for equipment

Ocean City officials are considering whether to add one or two dollars to the $3 Boardwalk tram fare next summer to help cover the substantial cost of buying new equipment.

Mayor Rick Meehan and three councilmen who sit on the Transportation Commission suggested earlier this month that increasing the tram fare could be a way to cover the cost of replacing or refurbishing the 17-year-old fleet. The estimated replacement costs range from $1.7 million to $4.5 million.

But whether the committee proposes that idea to the council will depend on what Budget Manager Jennie Knapp finds as she considers what impact the higher rates might have on revenue and tram ridership.

“There are three types of fares: the all-day pass, the discount card and the straight fare,” she said. “We have to track the growth of each one before we make a recommendation.”

Will they lower it after it is paid for or will be like the IRS? (map)

Cut free time in parking lot, raising taxes and increasing tram fees. OC sure knows how to attract more visitors.

It's already a rip off unless you have mobility issues.

DisneyLand is in California. DisneyWorld is in Florida. DisneyTown is in Maryland.

They can't afford the Marlin $5K prize that brings millions to the town but they want to spend $60K to light up a stupid water tank. Sheesh!

Forget it, $3 is already too high! When my family of 5 asked and we were told $15 we laughed in their face and said no thanks, we can walk!

They already did. You only get 20 mins on the lot (from 30). The Tram is mostly for elderly people who can't walk the length of the boardwalk. Just look at the attendees for Springfest and Summerfest. The Town should simply educate the old people to walk a few blocks to catch a bus instead of a tram. The Town needs younger visitors who are willing to spend more. Tell the old folks to stay home already.

Why does the city own it....why not send it out to bid and award the contract to an independent company.

The key word in the entire story is "COULD". Mayor Rick said "...increasing the tram fare COULD be a way to cover the cost..."

Every time the word COULD is used via City Hall, one needs to head for the hills...EVERY TIME!

What was the fare 17 years ag0? Like 50 cents, or a dollar? That OC government are a bunch of spend junkies. They haven't figured out that they should put up a toll booth as soon as your car hits the island, and charge tourists for just BEING THERE.
