The machines should be filled with what sells. You can fill them with all the carrots, granola bars and other "healthy" foods but what good does it do if no one buys it? Los Angeles Consolidated School District tried something similar in elementary schools and within a week the little tykes were running a black market of Twinkies, candy bars and chips. Children have more common sense than "feel good" adults.
I think the state should mandate a scale, heart moniter and diabetes tester (along with a brief questionaire)to be attached to every vending machine and only allow snacks to be dispensed according to ones general health. But really, in a school it's probably not a bad idea to have healthy snacks availible. Then the kids can go home and pig out on processed high fructose, fatty foods.
There should not be vending machines in the schools, period! If someone needs a snack for health reasons or otherwise, they should bring their own snack from home. When I was in school we drank from the water fountains between classes and never had morning or afternoon snacks! There also were very few overweight students!
i know that at schools in wicomico county the students arent allowed to buy things out of the machines until after school. then its their choice. dont put more laws and rules down. its makeing kids miserable. they dont want to go to school and learn cause too many rules!
If there were seperate vending machines at schools for cash or food stamp cards I bet the line would snake around the school at the food stamp machine. We need to wean people off the government tit once and for all. It's only human nature - the more you give the less they do.
Since when is it anybody's business, other than their parents', what any school kid eats? And why do our tax dollars go to provide breakfast at school? Isn't it the responsibility of the parents to feed their kids before the kids leave in the morning?
We never had them in our schools, that is 'til I got to college. We brought an apple or orange from home, where we knew it was fresh. Would you buy an apple from a vending machine?? no. We also had chips or cookies, bt that was just a "dessert" after out sandwich lunch, which we packed every day. Mom showed us how and we did it. Celery sticks with pnut butter, Homemade cookies. Great for trading for junk food. That way everybody had a mix of snacks!
I think there should be a bigger concern at what food they serve for lunch it is junk it looks and taste horrible. I have to say half ends up in the trash but its free the students don't care and the family probably has foods stamps but they cant feed there kids. they shouldn't give them money give them cereal and milk.
How about parents actually encouraging physical activity. Let them take up a sport, work out with them, take them fishing, something.
Yeah, theyre still going to play video games and hang out with friends, but at least encourage it.
Whatever sells should go into vending machines. Vending machines are normally only in high schools anyway and not even allowed to be used from 8am-3pm.

Yes I absolutely do. With the obesity problem as it is they need to get healthy food somewhere. Lord knows so many don't get healthy food at home.
carrots and celery would be great in the machines.

Yes - or simply get rid of the vending machines with the crap in them.

I don't think the point is filling or not filling with healthy foods, the point is making money.
