Mom Donates Kidney To Son, Loses Job

A Philadelphia mother was left jobless Tuesday after she took time off work to donate a kidney to her dying son and was fired during her absence.

Claudia Rendon did not hesitate when doctors delivered the news that her son Alex was in desperate need of a life-saving kidney transplant and offered him her kidney, myFOXphilly.com reported.

But she had already used up her vacation time at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, in northeast Philadelphia, earlier in the year following the death of her mother and uncle and her father's diagnosis with leukemia.

What is a company to do? This mom did the right thing. Her son's life is worth more than any job. But, a company cannot give continuous (which is this case) leave to people without some limit and still stay in business for all the other people who work for them. It looks like this company worked with her several times already. This is very unfortunate but if a company had to do this for every single employee we would have NO ECONOMY left in America. All of the jobs would be moved overseas.

I donated a kidney to my sister in 2009. I didnt hesitate one bit because it was the right thing to do. I admire this lady for stepping up to help someone in need. There is something out there for her. Its a shame this company can't make an exception. No human judgement anymore. My work fortunately was there for me all the way. I hope she finds a job even better than the one she had.

7:22 the only reason they could legally fire her was because the company was small with under 50 employees. When a company is over 50 employees it is bound by law to give them 12 weeks leave. What they did may have been legal but it wasn't morally right. She saved her son's life. She should have been given at least a temporary reprieve even if it wasn't the full 12 weeks.

I cannot believe the lack of compassion from alot of you on this blog today.
This is 3rd post I've read comments on and you all are ruthless!
It doesn't say that she was expecting to be PAID for the time off!
It also doesn't state that she just took off for a personal day here and there.
She's had illness and death in her family.
If I was her, I'd tell them to take the job and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. There will eventually be a better job for her to go to.
You people need to put yourselves in others shoes before making some of the comments I've seen today.
Your TOTAL lack of compassion is troubling!
