Traffic Crash near Milford Results in Heroin Seizure

Milford – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington man for possessing a large amount of heroin after he crashed his car while attempting to flee from troopers.

The incident occurred Monday February 9, 2015 around 9:50 p.m. as a trooper on patrol in the area of Bay Road (US113/SR1) and Barratts Chapel Road north of Frederica observed a white sedan traveling southbound on SR1 above the posted speed limit. The trooper was able to catch up to the vehicle and activate the patrol vehicle’s emergency equipment in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Upon doing so, the vehicle continued southbound and increased its speed in an attempt to elude the trooper. Once the vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, the trooper discontinued the pursuit at the intersection of Bay Road and Thompsonville Road, but continued to travel southbound at a safe distance behind the fleeing car in order to determine if the vehicle was going to enter Milford city limits.

As the trooper approached the area of I.G. Burton car dealership, the suspect car was located and had been involved in a collision with two telephone poles. The operator, who was later identified as Ronald E. Brown, 25 of Wilmington, was laying outside the car with apparent injuries sustained in the crash. He was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital by EMS and treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. A search of the 2012 Ford Fusion resulted in locating a black bag on the front passenger’s side floor containing 2,340 bags of heroin weighing 35.115 grams along with over $2,000.00 in suspected drug proceeds.

Ronald Brown was eventually transported back to Troop 3 where he was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 5 Quantity (Heroin), Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Disregard a Police Officer Signal, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and other traffic related offences. He was arraigned at JP7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $102, 255.00 cash bond.
