Joe,
At 4:55 this afternoon we pulled into Walgreen's parking lot just after two minivans collided in the intersection of North Blvd. and Salisbury Blvd. The crash was hard enough to deploy airbags in both vehicles. Fortunately a nurse, an off duty firefighter and several other people were near and able to render assistance and make the appropriate calls on their cell phones. My wife went into Walgreen's to shop and I waited in the parking lot for the police cars to arrive. And waited. And waited. Finally, at 5:15 the first police car arrived on scene with emergency lights flashing. It was clearly marked, "Pocomoke City Police." I recognized the officer who emerged as a friend who works on the Pocomoke Police force so there is no question it was a unit from Pocomoke. The first Salisbury unit did not arrive until 5:22 and he was in no hurry and had no emergency lights activated. Is the rumor true about cuts in Salisbury PD? Are the cuts THAT serious?

I had a complaint about a issue and they never showed to follow up. Sorry can't say what the issue was they will remember my name.
Barbara clearly has her hands full.
Kudos for those who stopped to help.
If we had given half the money the Fire Department received to the Police Department things would look better.
Great point Joe. To many people don't want to get involved.
What is going to happen if we get a serious state of emergency? Are we on our own?
The cars were NOT moved out of the intersection. They had collided in the middle of the intersection of North Blvd. and South Salisbury Blvd. The intersection was blocked to traffic. I was there. I saw it. It was a joke.
"Heck if you're having a heart attack, it might be 5 minutes before ambulance leaves firehouse"
THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Get rid of SPD. I can't say this enough. Just state WHY Salisbury needs it OWN PD. Ya'll all pay taxes to both the County and State for police protection. Just how much do you need? Should it be by city block? Stupid!
I thought my computer was crashing and then I realized my boob was on the keyboard. Just thought you could use a laugh. :)
It's not that the cuts are that serious, it's the laziness that runs rampant throughout the force.
so at 10 minutes for a real emergency, and you're worried about 27 minutes for paperwork?

When police, fire dept., ems or anyone else is called, THEY SHOULD GET THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
They will have paperwork anyway, regardless of what the call is for.
Get off you fat lazy butts and DO YOUR JOB. Or, find a new career.
Stop making excuses. If it's you job, DO IT!!
The problem with this incident was not lack of EMS, it was lack of traffic control. South Salisbury Blvd. was completely blocked at that intersection for over 45 minutes. No traffic passing through at all; everyone had to make their own detour any way they could. It was a zoo.

EMS is a big problem in the City because it falls under the fire department. The city EMS should be an entity on it's own totally separate from any FD.
You need to understand that most of these people(fire and ems) are volunteers and risk their lives for you...be a little nicer to the people that VOLUNTEER to save your life!
If we're in a serious state of emergency, you had better be prepared. Don't rely on government to help you, they'll be busy taking care of themselves, they don't give a rats patoot about you, me or anyone else. Stock up now on everything, including ammo.

Remember that picture of a shirt some female emt was wearing that Joe posted, saying, "it's our job to save your ass, not kiss it".
Yeah, that sure makes me want to be more friendly to them, how about you?
They keep wanting special recognition for what they do and treated like hero's and such.
Why can't they just do the job and be proud in the fact that they helped someone?
Like you say, they VOLUNTEERED to do this. If they want hero worship, join the military.
Most of them boys think they know more than nurses and doctors. PUHLEASE.
If they are trained to help, then help. Keep your ego's at home.
Ireton needs to go and hopefully, the new mayor will show the chief the "door".
I just went to settlement on a home about 2 blocks from the city line . Who would respond ? I didn't want to be in the city because of the turmoil and taxes.
I still have my arsenal of weapons.
for protection. The sheriffs dept. (wicomico) has done an excellent job where I live now , I see patrol cars daily and we are 18 miles from town.

Have you ever worked as a ff, emt or paramedic? I didn't think so. While most of the people really do enjoy helping others they to can become frustrated at the people that abuse the system. How would you feel if you left your family to go on a call for something really stupid. They get these bogus calls all the time. People that do not want to wait in the ER call the ambulance so they can be seen quicker or because they don't have cab money. The people that abuse the system are the ones that think you should kiss their behind. The ones that are actually NEEDING some type of care are not the ones the emts and paramedic mind having to care for.

Thanks for clearing that up. I hadn't given any thought to the people you mentioned. Now I can understand your frustration. Peace.
It is their job plain and simple all I am reading is excuses. If you can't cut it find another position you can handle. Taking 30 minutes for one officer to show up is ridiculous, I don't care what anyone says. And did someone really use traffic as an excuse? I have never seen traffic as a problem for cops when they are going 80 MPH on the highway.
My suggestion....to those being critical about response times an so on, get yourself off of the computer for a while and do some ride-a-longs with the police and ems workers. Could very well be a eye opener as to the workload for the police and ems. Also, hound the crap out of your city and county reps for more funding for more staffing.
So if I have an accident that blocks a major intersection in Salisbury I will be expected to: 1.Direct traffic around it for at least a half hour and 2. arrange for my own tow truck to remove the vehicles from the right-of-way?
Nobody is complaining about the actions of the responders here. What people are complaining about the response time because there are not enough officers because there is no money to hire enough of them.
Having been on a volunteer squad myself, it is easy to understand the frustration of getting an emergency call just to show up & the "patient" is waiting with a suitcase packed for the hosp. Time is crutial for a genuine emergency. In our home town the police responded to every call & usually beat us there. They were already on the road whereas we responded from our homes & had to stop to get the rig. Also, if a dr. on scene is not willing to take responsibilty for & transport with the patient the EMT/Paramedic is in charge. The response time for this incident in question is unacceptable.
