Transportation In Delaware Moves Into The Digital Age

DelDOT Announces Launch of New Social Media Initiative

Dover -- As evolving communications tools continue to expand and become a driving force behind communication in the 21st Century, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is taking the leap in to the realm of social media. Today, DelDOT is launching their social media initiative, which will expand the department's ability to communicate with the public.

"We are excited about taking this next step toward creating more open and fluid lines of communication," said DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks. "By using social media tools like Twitter and blogs, members of the public who may not get their news through traditional sources will be able to stay informed about DelDOT and our projects."

Today, the department is launching a new DelDOT Facebook page, www.facebook.com/pages/Dover-DE/Delaware-Department-of-Transportation-DelDOT/163083853706553, which will provide another venue to get out important and timely information. In 2009, DelDOT launched their Twitter feed, @DelawareDOT, which has included information about news releases, traffic advisories, and other information. This is an especially valuable tool for those traveling throughout Delaware, especially during the holidays. DelDOT has also maintained a Flickr account, www.flickr.com/photos/delawaredot, to showcase photographs taken by staff photographer James Pernol of projects and areas throughout Delaware. DelDOT's YouTube account, www.youtube.com/DelawareDOT, showcases informational videos about numerous projects that the department has undertaken. In October, DelDOT launched DelDOT Blogs, blogs.deldot.gov, which includes project updates and other helpful information.

"By using all of these outlets, each with their own specific use," said Wicks, "we are ensuring that DelDOT will continue to provide Delaware's citizens and visitors with the information that they need to make the time that they spend traveling throughout the state a little easier."

Beware of Facebook said...

Facebook does alot more than you think. I received 3 emails from facebook over the last 5 months in an attempt to get me to join. The first return email address tied to the facebook page came from an email address of a guy that I met on-line briefly 2 summers ago with no futher contact with him up until I called him in New Jersey in an attempt to find out who this person was using his email address and soliciting on behalf of facebook. He told me that the name of the person on the email to me was his wife's maiden name, but she had only inquired into joining facebook, but had never actually joined, nor given out any names of prospective users or email addresses. In all 3 facebook emails there were 5 pictures, 3 of which I did not know, but the other 2 people were my cousin in a Santa suit with his grandson from about 15 years ago. (I remember seeing it on a Christmas card at my parents) and the last image in the first email was of my ex-wife and her current boyfriend that I am divorced from now, for over 25 years. The last two facebook emails contained up dated photos of the ex-wife. So all three had images of a cousin and an ex-wife without me giving anyone a single piece of information. If that isn't an invasion of privacy, I don't know what is.
