for uncooked foods its the same as a grocery store

what we need to do is limit what can be bought with the cards

Anonymous said...

No, they should be only for the purchase of non processed foods, so they don't resale it to others for Beer and Drug money. They all stay home and don't work so they can make dinners from scratch. Put eggs, flour and sugar together and actually cook, not pop it in the microwave! Processed foods are expensive, but conviant for working folks whom have to balance, Job, kids, PTA, Husband, family obligations. The welfare rat has to watch tv, drink beer, watch tv, take a dump, watch tv, smoke dope, drink beer.......

no

Anonymous said...

Of course. Why should local businesses prosper?

Anonymous said...

For fish maybe but not for the high dollar items. Crabs cooked or not, shrimp, lobster, crab meat and any other item that is prepared should NOT be purchased with an Independence card.

Anonymous said...

Definitely not! You have people that don't even qualify for food stamps that are unable to afford crabs or seafood. You mean to tell me it's okay for people who sit home on their butts and mooch off the government to get them? No.

Anonymous said...

Come on people, to suggest that we take seafood away from these poor underprivileged victims of society would be an abomination that could interpreted as a direct attack on socialism.
Of course, this is known as sarcasm.

no

Sure. Soon as they are tested for drugs and alcohol.

BOOM! 11:37 IS brilliant!

Anonymous said...

No, only for the low-end seafood

Anonymous said...

they can buy some chicken necks and string to go crabbing or some fishing line/hooks and go fishing if they want seafood.

Anonymous said...

No!!! I work hard for my money. Why should they eat better than my kids and I.
I am not against foodstamps if you need it, But when they are eating better than my family it burns me up..

Like it or not, if people with Independence cards want to blow them on high-end UNCOOKED items, why not? Who makes us judge and jury? They'll soon run out of their month's allotment if they spend it on expensive things. As Marie Antoinette said, "Let them eat cake."

Anonymous said...

If they have enough to be able to buy the expensive seafood and still have enough left over to buy stuff for the rest of the month..... maybe we are giving them to much. They do NOT deserve the luxuries in life on our dime while others that are working their behinds off can't afford the same things or even to feed their family. If they want a luxury I suggest they get a job and pay their own way in life.

Absolutely not!

I am a real estate agent who is divorcing from my husband and actually need the help of food stamps right now. I have bought crab meat with my card and don't see a problem with that! Yes i have a college degree but i cant get a full time salary job because most state jobs are frozen right now and my degree is in criminal justice and behavioral science. How can you tell my kids they can't have seafood! Seriously who do you think you are! It is not my fault my husband lost his $80,000/yr job my income has gone from $60,000 to $30,000. My kids are used to traveling and the finer things so if I want to give my kids crabs one time this whole summer on my independence card I will since they are used to them 10-20 times a season in the past. Yes I see some people abuse the system. These are the ones with 5 or 6 kids getting 800-1000/mo in food stamps! I get less than $200/mo for 3 people.

Qualifying for the card is an issue in itself.

It's not a question of a business accepting the Independence card, it's a what the State permits the purchase of with the card.:

You can buy the following items with your Independence card: Any food to be eaten at home by people, including baby food, non-alcoholic beverages, and seasonings. Seeds and plants to grow food for your own family’s consumption.
You cannot buy non-grocery items with the Food Stamp benefits, such as cleaning products, pet food, paper products, alcohol, or tobacco.

Uncooked food is uncooked food. Why is our business what somebody eats? As somebody else mentioned, they just burn up their points faster. The politicians are the problem, not the end users or the local seafood markets. just saying..............

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not!!!!! I agree with the above about them eating better than my family, when we WORK for living!!!! I also disagree with convenience stores taking them as well!!!!!!! It should only be for milk, cheese and some meats! Not steaks or any kind of seafood!!!! if you want it, Go get a damn job and pay cash like the rest of us!!!!! Also, put a limit on WIC - here's a great solution for that - If you have baby number 1 - Fine. Only have WIC till age of three, not five and if you have baby number 2 you should not receive wic, due to the fact you know what caused baby number 1!!!!! I DON'T CARE IF YOU HAVE DADDY NUMBER 2!! If you can't figure out these boys are NOT going to marry you, then QUIT having the kids!!!!!!!!! I am tired of paying for them as well as your food!!!!!
Limitations on all of it!!!!!!!! Only food stamps for a year and Wic for 1 child only and quit wasting my tax paying dollars!!!! We are trying to support our own family - NOT YOURS!!!!! Also, I am married (16 years) and we have 2 kids and guess what? WE pay for our food, clothes and home!!! BTW, We own it!!!!!! Why, Cause we work for a living, instead of living off of the Government!!!
This Country was based on individualism, NOT SOCIALISM!!!!! Go out and work!!!!!

I don't blame any business for taking the card as long as it is within the guidlines of the program.

anonymous said...

all you hear is we we we! wth! grow up people!!! are you all just jealous of the fact that YOU can't afford seafood??? c'mon, why keep critizing people for their hardships? some of those food stamp havng people DO WORK and WORK HARD to make a living for their family. but all YOU PEOPLE do is complain! GET OVER YOURSELVES

Anonymous said...

Children go without so adults can eat crabs.

Anonymous said...

The only form of seafood should be a can of tuna and i don't even buy that when it's not on sale! how do stores get reimbursed for the use of the card? shouldn't there be some kind of audit? receipts to see what is being purchased? Don't even get me started on the abuse of WIC! i overheard a girl and her boyfriend (no kids in sight) picking out WIC approved juices that they could mix with vodka!

We are not criticizing people because of a hardship. We are criticizing them for abusing the system. If you can spend 50 dollars on crabs for 1 meal than you could also use that 50 dollars to make 5 meals using something else. The country is broke and some people can't afford food at all yet these people think they are entitled to having crabs because they work hard...... well who gives a crap there are a lot of people out there that work hard and go without on a daily basis.

Anonymous said...

NO. Hell No. I haven't eaten crabs since 2008. And, that was at a family gathering after a funeral. I can't afford to buy 1 crab with my payroll check that I work for everyday. We need to get rid of medicaid. And, these people need to get a job. I'm tired of my taxes being used so that these people can sit back and chill.

you bet I love being in the grocery store & watching raw shrimp purchased at the register, then watching them go back to the seafood section and paying the guy $1 or $2 to steam them at Giant. I also have a chance to admire the lovely nails & hair on the customer while in line.

Anonymous said...

Let them eat bread and "gubment" cheese!

Anonymous said...

No Way this is crazy I work everyday and our family gets crabs one time a year. I work to hard to part with that kind of money for one dinner.I know some people need help but give us taxpayers a break this is crazy!!

Anonymous said...

NFW! Bread, milk, cheese, chicken, pork, and hamburger yes. Soda, chips, beer, wine, and tobacco no.

12.20 if your making 30 k a year how in the heck are you getting a i card!!!!!! who care if your kids are used the the so called nicer things maybe your kids need to try some spam and eggs and taters for a while!!! your 60 k a year real atard income was doomed to come to a end . buy your kids a comic book and a mcdonalds hamburger for this years stacation

But when they are eating better than my family it burns me up..

August 10, 2011 11:57 AM

That's all it is, jealousy. If you see these people buying crabs you must be in the same store. And if you're not in the store, you haven't seen anyone do it.

How do any of you know they aren't buying the crabs with the card and paying for the steaming with cash?

Why is everyone up in everyone else's business anyway? If it wasn't legal you think stores would be able to do it for any length of time without getting caught? Especially with this many busy bodies.

I wonder how many of you have actually seen it and not just repeating what you have heard. lol. That seems more likely.

Anonymous said...

lol do you people even listen to yourselves? You can't tell people what to eat if they use a card or use cash.

Joe is getting you all worked up in a frenzy over nothing. And I just love the get a job parts. lol.

If you want to eat crabs, get a job. If you want to eat a steak, get a job. lol

Sit on ur butt and eat gubnut cheese all you want. lol.

Oops, gotta go. My microwave is dinging. lol

Do you know how many families that are on food stamps? Families who have had some tradgedy in their life recently and have fallen on hard times. NOT ALL FAMILIES ON FOOD STAMPS ARE WHITE TRASH,LIARS AND THIEFS OF THE SYSTEM ! Grow up and quit being immature and saying that "of course these people shoudn't be able to buy seafood".
BY THE WAY..CRABS ARE $33.00 A HALF BUSHEL MOST OF THE TIME! i am sure your minivans and big suvs use 3x's more than that in gas. Joe quit judging and forcing these other fools to comment on here about a topic they only know a fraction of what they are speaking of!

Anonymous said...

11:47
I'm sure those people in their minivans and their big Suvs are paying for their OWN gas. They are not sucking off the government teet. Here is the difference. You can do what ever you want as long as YOU are paying for it and not someone ELSE.

10:37
I have witness them buy the crabs with their independence card and turn around and give them cash to steam the crabs. I have also on MANY occasions watched them pay for food in Walmart then turn around and pay 50 dollars in cash for movies. I have also witnessed them paying for their food with the independence card and taking money out so they could pay for either cigarettes or some type of booze. YES IN FACT I HAVE SEEN IT. Just about ANYONE that shops in a store has seen the abuse and they are tired of it.
