Although Sesame Street's creators have never said that the two characters are gay, viewers have long speculated that roommates Bert and Ernie are more than just friends.
Perhaps the petition, started by Illinois resident Lair Scott, was prompted by the changing tide in the U.S.: In June, New York became the sixth — and largest — state to legalize same-sex marriage.
Or maybe people just want Sesame Street to continue with its progressive message that has seen the show deal with sensitive topics of race, death and self-acceptance. Some people might think that if Archie Comics can introduce itsfirst gay character, then Sesame Street, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009, should certainly let its two "gayest" characters marry.

OMG LET IT GO PEOPLE! Talk about choking on this now...if they make Bert and Ernie marry that will put the icing on the cake. There has been a reason they have never came out and said they are gay and that reason is they are PUPPETS. That is a children's show. Not political in any way. Let it go. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
I hope Sesame street closes down before they give into gay rights...

Ouc children never watched Sesame Street, we weren't comfortable with the views of the originators, producers, and such. Our grandchildren do not watch either. And I can now say I am proud they never did. This is disgusting! We are all born in to a sinful world with sin running loose worldwide. Children should be allowed to be children, not pawns in the sinful ways of adults.
i'm 31 and i LOVED sesame street as a kid. my 4.5 year old doesn't watch it, not because i won't let him but because i think there are better shows on tv for him to watch.
i say good for bert & ernie if they are a couple. but "making" them get married is rediculous, petty, & un-necessary.
I'm all about gay rights, I'm pro gay marriage. my best friend is a lesbian. but there comes a time when enough is enough. B&E are puppets. If people fighting for gay rights want to be taken seriously, they need to stop pulling stupid stunts like this. it demeans their cause.

At first I thought the story was funny. But then I realized they were trying to desensitize children to the gay lifestyle.
What a sneaky and despicable way to try and indoctrinate children into accepting gays and gay marriage.
And this is public television, which means...you guessed it. It's funded by taxpayer money.
I'm more worried about this than who buys crabs and where.
