New York Proposes Nation's Highest Cigarette Taxes

Cigarettes may cost more than $10 per pack in New York under the state's latest plan to close a $9 billion budget gap. In New York City, the tax alone on a pack of cigarettes would rise to $5.85.

And cigarettes aren't the only carcinogens set for a tax bump under the proposal.

libs will never learn, when you tax things your revenue decreases.

oh and before everyone jumps on the bandwagon and says good for them, ciggs are nasty!.

when the cigg well runs dry they will come after something else, maybe something that affects you.

the only way to stop it is stop the spending now!

One hundred cartons of cigarettes will easily fit in the trunk of the average full size automobile. One can purchase 100 cartons of cigarettes in New Church, Va for $4,000. In five hours one can be in New York City where the $4,000 purchase suddenly has a value of over $10,000. And people wonder why cigarette "smuggling" is such a big business.

And don't forget the Indians! A large percentage of cigarette sales in New York State are made on Indian Reservations where there is no tax, either State or Federal. Politicians are stupid, New York politicians are beyond stupid.

9:18AM - yeah your scheme sounds great if you are willing to go to prison for felony cigarette trafficking when you get caught... lot's of things increase in value if you ignore the laws of our country. Is what you are suggesting any different or better than illegal immigration? Sure, your idea is a possibility, but it is also illegal. But hey, you're not brown-skinned, you hate the Feds, so its OK.

The economy is hard. Unemployment is high. Folks are struggling. This is why people break the law. At least it is only cigarettes and not crack cocaine.

Think about that... couldn't the exact same argument apply to illegal immigration? The economy is hard (in Latin America). Unemployment is high (in Latin America). Folks are struggling (in Latin America)."

Laws are laws are laws. You can't pick and choose which ones to abide by at your convienence, simply because you are struggling. At least that's what you xenophobes think when it comes to illegal immigration. 9:18AM's comment is typical. I can break the law because I can. But illegal means illegal when it comes to immigration.

BTW - I advocate breaking neither immigration laws, nor cigarette trafficking laws. Just wanted to point out that you can earn a lot of money by committing felonies.. doesn't mean you should.
