OCPD WARNING CITIZENS ABOUT SCAM

The Ocean City Police Department is advising citizens to be aware of a fraud scheme from an out-of-country scam artist using Text Telephone Yoke (TTY) relay operators representing themselves as a law enforcement officer of the “Department of Law and Justice.” One Ocean City resident has already been a victim of this scam.

This scam can be perpetrated by the victim being contacted usually by telephone. The caller advises the victim that they have a delinquent or have an outstanding loan and that if not paid; the victim will be charged criminally. The thing that makes this scammer seem credible is the amount of personal and bank information known by the caller when speaking to the victim.

Based on the info provided, the TTY operator should have identified a scam and hung up the phone. No real law enforcement agency will contact you about a debt.
