More Drivers Text At Wheel, Despite Bans

WASHINGTON (AP) - For all the criticism and new legal bans, texting by drivers just keeps increasing, especially among younger motorists.

About half of American drivers between 21 and 24 say they've thumbed messages or emailed from the driver's seat. And what's more, many drivers don't think it's dangerous when they do it _ only when others do.

A national survey, the first government study of its kind on distracted driving, and other data released Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration underscore the difficulty authorities face in discouraging texting and cellphone talking while driving.

That's because I don't need some stupid idiot in government telling me what I can and can't do!

they need to couple this with the "traffic fatalities down to lowest since 1949!" story. i guess its really not all about the safety afterall, is it mr government man?

So many people think the laws don't apply to them. I see people talking on handheld phones while driving constantly, and quite a few texters (mostly female). I bet heavy fines and/or points on a driver's license would get their attention.

The latest stats? The lowest number of traffic deaths COMBINED with more drivens miles than any other time in history. Yet the police say they need ever greater and ever more intrusive "campaigns" and even more high-tech "weapons" to use against the citizenry --- in order to "keep us safe". And by "safe", I mean lining the pockets of the theiving politicians and overbearing Orwellian bureaucrats who know how we should all live. Yet people like the heel clicking goose stepping anonymous poster from 1:49 keep endorsing MORE fines. More "points". MORE camera's. MORE surveillance. MORE "punishment". The reason many people don't think the law applys to them? They are wearing a gun and a badge....
