2 Charged in Connection with Lewes Car Break-In and Shooting Incident


Lewes - Troopers have charged a 19 year old Rehoboth Beach man and a 24 year old Millsboro man in connection with a series car break-in’s and shooting incident which occurred in the development of the Reserves of Nassau, in August 2014.

Preliminary investigation determined that the incident occurred on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at approximately 4:00 a.m. at a residence in the 17000 block of King Philip Way in the development of the Reserves at Nassau, Lewes. The 67 year old male resident was awakened by the sound of the automatic garage door to the residence opening.

The victim went to investigate and entered the garage area through an interior door of the house, and found the exterior garage door partially opened. The victim ducked under the garage door and observed 2 suspects rummaging through his car located in the driveway. He was confronted by Montrell T. Burton-19 of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware who was armed with an unknown type handgun. Burton pointed the handgun at the victim and forced him to the ground. Burton discharged 1 round in the direction of the victim. The round did not hit him and he was not injured as a result of the gunfire. Burton and a second suspect, identified as Paris J. Boyer-24 of Millsboro, Delaware, fled the area in a Hyundai Santa Fe with undisclosed property removed from the car. During the investigation, Troopers identified a total of 4 unsecured vehicles in the development that had been entered and property removed.

After further investigation into this incident and the investigation of several other incidents involving thefts from unsecured vehicles which occurred in the Lewes and Rehoboth areas, State Police Detectives were able to identify and connect Burton and Boyer to the Reserves at Nassau incident.

On Thursday, September 4, 2014, Troopers located Paris J. Boyer at his residence in the 32000 block of Amber Winds Drive, Millsboro where he was taken into custody without incident. Upon execution of a search warrant for the house and the Hyundai Santa Fe located at the residence, Troopers discovered property and evidence connecting Boyer to the Reserves at Nassau incident.
On Friday, September 5, 2014, Troopers were able to locate Montrell Burton as he was traveling as passenger in a vehicle in the area of Smyrna, Delaware. Troopers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, and Burton fled on foot into a nearby marsh area along SR1. He was located by Troopers and taken into custody.

Montrell T. Burton-19 was charged with a total of 15 crimes including, Robbery 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited after Conviction of a Violent Felony, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Aggravated Menacing, Reckless Endangering 1st Degree, Burglary 3rd Degree (4 counts), Theft Under $1500 (4 counts), Conspiracy 2nd Degree. Burton was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $181,000 Cash Bond. (Photo attached, white tank top)

Paris J. Boyer-24 was charged with a total of 9 crimes including, Burglary 3rd Degree (4 counts), Theft Under $1500 (4 counts), Conspiracy 2nd Degree. Boyer was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $17,000 Secured Bond. (Photo attached, white shirt, glasses)

Troopers continue to investigate this incident and other incidents involving thefts from unsecured vehicles that have occurred in the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach areas.

The Delaware State Police want to remind people to utilize the following tips:
Lock your car doors and roll up you windows
Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle
Leave outdoor lights on in the driveway or have security lighting installed
Report any suspicious activity to 9-1-1
