Many Md. Teachers, Principals Unprepared For Common Core, Official State Survey Finds

Less than a quarter of Maryland teachers said they were “very familiar” with the Common Core State Standards when asked about it last fall, according to a survey conducted for the Maryland State Department of Education.

The new standards-based education curriculum was adopted by Maryland in 2010 and was supposed to be fully implemented by the 2013-2014 school year.

The survey found that roughly half of teachers, 55%, said they were “somewhat familiar” with Common Core, while 24% said they were not familiar with the standards at all.

State officials tried to put a positive spin on the results but were met with criticism and questions by state Board of Education members. The survey results were presented to board members at the monthly state board meeting on Tuesday, but local school districts had already received the survey results.

it really doesn't matter....does it? even if they knew it front and back it will be a disaster. we need a common core for the messed up households that produce messed up students...along with parents willing to help in their child's education rather than assume a public school is 100% responsible.

The question that begs to be answered is if in fact MD has number 1 schools then why change such a success story?
Why not let the other states be the guinea pig?
It's a bunch of crap that's why and people would be best served to know that everything that comes out of a democrats mouth is a lie.

I would like to thank all the progressive know-it-alls who told objectors to Common Core what conservative nut jobs they are.

I'm a pretty middle of the road guy who has years of donations to my local PTA's in my checkbook.

Tell Arne Duncan that those nasty white suburban moms like my daughter that he insulted are a lot smarter than he is, as is her best friend the middle school teacher.

Glad to be an Independent, both registered and in the rest of my life.

Maryland had to leave No Child Left Behind because our minority and special ed students were not coming anywhere near the performance levels required. There was no choice but to adopt something else.

Where has MSEA and NEA been during all of this? They are supposed to be supporting education. That is why school employees and educators join these associations and pay big bucks in dues!!! Where is the support that they promised? Oh, maybe they are too busy lining their own pockets! Try to get rid of them is like trying to get rid of bed bugs, almost impossible. Wake up teachers and stop sitting back waiting for high paid MSEA and NEA to do nothing. Call or write to your legislators. They will listen because they want your vote. They would like to keep their job.
