What Teachers Want

(Photo: Riggzy) It is difficult to generalize about the opinions of any group as large and diverse as public school teachers, of which there are about 3.2 million. But it can’t be good news that a survey of teachers released in March by MetLife found the lowest job satisfaction numbers since 1989, with just 44 percent of respondents describing themselves as “very satisfied” with their classroom careers, down from 59 percent in 2009 and 62 percent in 2008. According to MetLife, nearly a third of public school teachers are considering leaving their jobs.

Some will cry “good riddance.” The contention that large numbers of teachers lack ambition and are insufficiently committed to raising student achievement—and should therefore be replaced—is common among politicians and has helped to fuel the standards and accountability school reform movement.

I know some of the teachers in worcester county are extremly lazy. They expect the parent to teach the kids. The kids come home with tons of home work that they have not seen before. The teachers or principles dont have a clue when it comes to discipline. Its too much or not enough. There are teachers that pick with students to try in getting them in trouble. Worcester county has a few blue ribbon schools which means nothing more than they were able to get more grant money. The new principle at the Snowhill Middle School is worthless and needs to go now rather than later. If the BOE have staff that dont want to work replace them.I prefer home schooling anyway.

It's quite obvious to anyone who has attended a public school that a good number of teachers lack ambition and don't really care about the job. I can count on one hand, the amount of teachers I had K-12 that were difference makers in my education. Reward good teachers, get rid of subpar ones. No tenure for anyone.

Who would want a job baby sitting spoiled and not behaved brats all day and then when you do go to discipline the kid the parents want to cry assault. You want to know why education is subpar? I have been in public school and I can tell you 75% of the students could careless about what the teachers have to say. That is in regards to information or discipline. It is hilarious how American's love to have their cake and eat it too. If your kid is a snot head and the teacher can not do anything about for fear of being fired how are they supposed to control the classroom?

This has everything to do with children who are NOT being parented. A teacher should not accept any form of disrespect in their classroom be it student to teacher or student to student. The front office needs to back them up. If you are not here to learn, get out of the classroom.

If the teachers teach and stop trying to police the kids they would be better students. As a teacher you wear many hats and thats part of the problem. Teachers are no longer interested in the kids . All most teachers want is the pay check and get home on time. When teachers try to parent kids there will surely be some conflict. Its a fact.

It's easy to blame the teachers but look what they put up with. There are children out there who grew up in homes that place no value on education.

10:47 - the teachers are not trying to parent. They want the PARENTS to parent. They just want a classroom that is conducive to learning. My daughter is sick of students who want to distract the group from learning. The teacher needs the power to get undisciplined students out of their classroom.

I do feel bad for teachers and I think Lady Liddy hit the nail on the head. There is a lack of parenting and the teachers hands are tied. I've sat back and watched this for years now. These out of control children end up being labeled as learning disabled, ADD, and even autistic.
Usually these kids are put in a special class and/or are seen by in school therapists. Almost all take Ritalin or some other submission drug.
No one ever dares say to the parent what the real problem is-them. I think it should be mandatory that they are made to take a school aged child parenting class.

The last 20 years the education system has failed. Compare other nations to ours, and you'll see the appeasement of teachers has done nothing to benefit the education of the students at large. Remember, it used to be "The class size is too large", "We're not paid enough", "We need better facilities". Well when that is remedied, and the kids still don't learn, they blame something/someone else. Suddenly, now every parent is a "bad" parent because the teachers need a scapegoat. Are there some bad parents? Certainly. But are there some bad teachers? Definitely. Teachers claim to be above the fray, but lay blame on everything and everyone but themselves, no matter who the culprit actually is. All I want to see in my public schools is accountability. No tenure, since I don't see much of that anywhere else. A system that rewards good teachers, and a system that purges bad ones. Examine the "rubber room" cases of the teachers in NYC. It's a joke. The teachers unions don't care about the students, or their education. They care about those dues coming out of the paycheck. Can't get a union due from an unemployed teacher, so they defend everyone no matter what.
