A Letter To The Editor

Over the past month I have received up to three calls each week from the Daily Times.  After telling them how I'm not interested they continue to try to bully me into buying a subscription.  I have made it clear that I did receive it in the past and canceled it due to how unhappy I was with it.  The bullying continues telling me how my complaints of the past can be corrected, etc.  Why would it be corrected now yet not when I complained?  I also explained how after I canceled how long it took before they stopped delivering which I refused to pay for those papers.  Each time it's a different caller and a different phone number but always the same bully tactics.  This latest phone call (just hung up) I explained that I get my information from Salisbury News.  "Erik" informed me that this blog isn't accurate, how it doesn't cover local news, it's not a real news information site, etc.  I told him how something can happen and within a short amount of time it's posted on the blog and updated as information comes in.  I have to wait days to read it in the Daily Times if they bother to publish it at all.  I also told him how I can comment on something for or against the post, where I can't on the Daily Times if it's not what they want to hear.  As far as I'm concerned the Daily Times is part of the past and must be desperate or I wouldn't be receiving so many calls each week.  I've requested during each phone call to have my name and number taken off whatever list they are using.  Obviously this won't happen.

Any suggestions?

Yes, make documentation of said calls and bulling, and harassment and you can then go to small claims court and have the court tell them, plus you might get compensation...

Things to know:
In these times, most companies won't pay lawyers to fight in court because of the cost... Specially garnett (what ever their called) or aka daily times...

Also as a side note, this guy who used and android phone who could keep track of telemarketers and collections agencies calls, and had a program which is free, that can turn the voice mail into text... He used said devices to prove that he was being harassed by collections and other agencies, though he told them they had the wrong number and the wrong guy, they still continued to call... He did what I suggested above and took them to court and won... they had to take him off the list, and stop calling period!!! they also awarded him like 3k to 5k each time he took said agencies to claims court... won every time...

This does depend on if you can even make documentation on this harassment, probably since it is more than likely your home phone, you cant do this...

"Erik" and the Daily Times needs to get off their high horse and change their ways sooner than later otherwise they are going to be history.
They were most bias during the election and whenever a mention of Del McDermott was in their paper and certain people were commenting terrible personal attacks against the Delegate I complained via the "report abuse" function. The comments were never removed!

hang up - don't waste your time explaining.

1. Get caller's first and last name
2. Ask for supervisor
3. Explain that you do not want to be called anymore.
4. Get their business name and address
5. Document phone call with relevant data.
6. Send to DT and callers a certified letter(s), asking them to take you off the list.
7. Follow up with a certified mailing, touting your skills in helping to review sales calls and train their callers to provide better customer service. Offer on-the-spot "secret shopper" service for $2000 per call and give them your number. Indicate in the letter that calling constitutes acceptance of the offer and that you will bill the DT along with your review.
8. Wait for new calls.
9. When they call you again, document the call and how they can improve.
10. Send your paragraph on improvement, copy of certified letter, receipt, and invoice for $2000.
11. Send past due notices.
12. Sue in small claims.

You're right: The Daily Times is part of the past. Many newspapers are now going out of business. While I do get the Times, as I have for almost 50 years, I realize that papers are quickly becoming obsolete. I probably keep getting it out of habit. Sby.com does supply most of the news that I want, so the Times becomes useful only for obituaries and such.

And THIS is news?

Maybe if they reported something other than court records people would buy the paper. News means getting the facts about something and reporting it BEFORE there is a trial. The HSB story is a perfect example. The DT has reported nothing yet it is well known that something happened and an employee was forced to resign. If the DT doesn't know all the facts, they should at least report what they do know and people might be inclined to buy the stupid paper.

I hope some of the above suggestions help you out but in the mean time I also think if you just can hold off the Daily Times will be another one of those....remember record players and 8 track players and VCR's and other obsolete items from the past?
I think the problem with it is there's nothing orginal about it. They rarely keep up on any of the unsolved crimes and when a crime is solved we read very little about what's going on before and during a trial. The few human interest stories that are done are nice, but what about some heavy duty investigative reporting? They need to get out amongst the prostitues who frequent the flea bag motels and in time they will open up to a journalist and see what makes them tick. Prostitution, drug dealing and violent crime are all interrelated. They are extremely lax when it comes to what's going on in Annapolis also. Have a reporter follow around one of our representatives for a day and write about that. Welfare fraud is another thing they could investigate. I myself have seen someone trying to sell their independance card for pennies on the dollar.
They write all these nice stories about what a service area food pantries provide. Well follow some of these recipients of this free food and watch them sell the box of food for $5. Human interest stories aren't all rainbows and butterflies.

I paid my bill right after I got it which was due 3 days later, and 2 days after the due date, I got another bill which I trashed. Unbelieveable!

I get what people are saying about the DT, I don't subscribe myself. However, them going down the tubes is a loss for all of us. Can you imagine how great it would be to have a locally owned and operated newspaper that actually cared about local news? I know, this blog provides all of that, but I love the format of a newspaper. It's nice to have something tangible to hold in my hands and read. It would be nice to have a local paper that meant even a low standard. Unfortunately, there is nothing west of the Bayside Gazette.
