Prince George's Schools To Charge $50 Sports Fee

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Prince George's County high school students will pay $50 to play a sport in the coming school year. The school system approved the new rule Thursday.

Any student who is a member of an "Interscholastic Athletic Team" will be required to pay the fee. It will only be charged once. Students can play as many sports in a school year as they want without paying an additional fee.

Wonder who's gonna pay for that? Maybe with food stamps , or welfare check . You better believe the government will be in there somewhere to support this stupid idea.
Oh yeh , I know , if you are a minority , no pay.

I believe that a fee is charged in Wicomico, not only for sports but for band and other such activities. It's a shame that a fee must be charged, but they are EXTRAcurricular, so participants need to cover some of the expense. 3:13, was the racism necessary?

Do they mean to say that in addition to the revenue that the football teams bring in from ticket sales (and is then used to support the programs that can't support themselves, like girls soccer) and concession sales (run entirely by volunteer teachers and parents) is STILL not enough money for the schools? Football revenue in Delmar carries the whole school, including the band. But, as I said before, its only the beginning of fines, fees, surcharges, etc. I'm just surprised its got down to the local school level so quickly. Where are we gonna get the next Lebron James if his welfare mom has to come up with $50?

Better check on the facts about Delmar. Heard they will be charging a fee next year as well. The football team does NOT carry all the programs . It costs a great deal of money to have a sports team. Look into it!

I have no problem charging a fee for sports... no free rides for the moochers!

8:27...better check your math. Ever been to a Delmar football game? EVERY seat for EVERY game is sold out, with sometimes several hundred along the fences. THATS just on the delmar side. PLUS concessions (and I KNOW thats a sizeable chunk of green). Plus the trinket sales of t-shirts, swaetshirts, decals, etc. It's $2.50 a seat to get in. $5 for the playoffs. Do the math. PLUS the sales of Wildcat discount coupons. PLUS the revenue form the raffles and 50/50 drawings held at every game. PLUS the donations from local businesses to the football program. And all the VOLUNTEER efforts from the team doctors to the coaches. Plus, things like the softball tournament held in Delmar yesterday and today to raise more funds for the football team. We are talking about HUGE revenue from football there. If there is a fee, its because the school district WANTS and THINKS they can get it from the parents. Trust me, the girls sports are competitive and also fun to watch but FOOTBALL brings the bucks. There MIGHT be a 150 kids in Delmar that, together, play ALL the different sports. 150 x $50 equals about the revenue from ONE football game. Is that $50 (if that is the fee amount they are thinking about, I don't know) a significant portion of the costs??? I doubt it.
