New Yorkers Want Mosque Moved Regardless Of Rights, Poll Says

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Four out of five voters in New York state agree Muslims have the right to build a mosque near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in Manhattan, yet 67 percent say they should voluntarily move it elsewhere, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

Attitudes toward the proposed Islamic center two blocks from Ground Zero split along party lines. Democrats said it would be appropriate, 50 percent to 34 percent; Republicans rejected it, 90 percent to 8 percent, and independents opposed it 63 percent to 30 percent.

The issue, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Aug. 4 was “as important a test of the separation of church and state as any we may see in our lifetime,” has drawn opposition from national figures including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, both Republicans.

The proposal has become an issue in this year’s campaignfor New York’s governor. Republican Carl Paladino denounced it and Democrat Andrew Cuomo, the state’s attorney general, rejected calls to investigate the finances of the mosque’s developer without evidence or allegations of wrongdoing.

“Most voters think it isn’t ‘appropriate’ to put a mosque close to Ground Zero,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, based in Hamden, Connecticut. “Republicans overwhelmingly say no; Democrats say yes. But almost all New Yorkers agree that America’s belief in freedom of religion gives Muslims the right to build the mosque.”

If it is true that the mosque near Ground Zero is to promote tolerance;

It was suggested that a gay nightclub be opened next door to the mosque.

Two names suggested are;

"The Turban Cowboy", and "You Mecca Me Hot".

On the other side they should open a butcher shop that specializes in pork!

And across the street a store that sells and displays bikinis or ladies lingerie on manikins...or live models.

If they polled only NYC, instead of NY, the opposite would be found. Wouldn't it make sense to poll those whom it will directly affect on a daily basis?

10:34-What proof do you have that it would be supported by those in the 5 boroughs?

Personally, I support the Constitution. If the funding for the center is through the proper avenues, then what's the problem? I had family and friends that were within blocks of the WTC's when this all went down. Painting all Muslims with the same brush is foolish and shortsighted. Embracing the moderates further pushes the extremists to the fringe of their culture/societies.

I'm so glad the article did not refer to this mosque as a "cultural center", which is the new term the Muslims are using to describe the mosque (they must have acquired the services of a 5th Ave publicist). How many cultures do you think are going to be represented in that mosque? And do muslims EVER make concessions to us?? All I ever see is the USA and its citizens being asked (or told) to make more and more concessions to a group that has, as a religious doctrine, the belief in the elimination of all non-believers...how stupid can we be?? They not only laugh at our inability to prevent their provocations, but use that inability against us.

You've lost sight of the story Anonomyous 10:34. It is "The Mosque" is the symbol, "to most of us", of those that killed fellow Americans which is completely seperate from muslems wanting a place for prayer. If it were a center for German Natzi's to pray, they'd be driven out of the country, let alone have a known building in New York City near ground zero. The mosque would be a life long symbol of Radical Muslem Hate, for all Americans to see, plain and simple. And that old tolerance via the "I support the Constitution Regardlass" stuff gets old, in the face of all of the American lives that were lost to radical muslems. We wouldn't hear one peep from you, promoting all this forgivness and tolerance, if the friends and family you speak of, had jumped to their death to avoid being burned to death, or if they were burned to death or were crushed in the collapse, as happened to all of the 911 victims. Your intentions are high minded but sorely misguided in this emotional circumstance. The families of those 911 victims deserve all of our support and deserve our prayers. They overwelmingly do NOT want that mosque there and I'm with them 100 per cent. The word empathy seems lost on you.

1:36-So you'd prefer to paint the entire muslim religion with the same brush as the radicals? Muslims represent 1/4 of the worlds entire population. I'm not for forgiving or forgetting anything. Personally, if it was up to me we wouldn't be paying off the Pakistani's while the ISI gives our enemies the helping hand. I wouldn't just be using covert ops and drones in Pakistan. I wouldn't allow our enemies one second of peace. I wouldn't falsify an Afghani election in order to keep in President Karzai, a man who's already admitted he'd join the Taliban if left high and dry by the Americans, or if we tried to force investigations into the rampant fraud in the Afghani gov't. Do not question my beliefs or intestinal fortitude, simply because I believe in the Constitution.

But the fight we're in with the radicals, does not also mean we must fight this project. If the funding is from legitimate sources, what is the problem? Many millions of people came to this country to avoid religious persecution.

Whenever you take a bite of sushi, do you think about thousands of people killed by the japanese at pearl harbor? I know thats a silly analogy, but my point being we don't have to hate an entire ethnicity of people FOREVER because of the actions of a very small representation of said ethnicity that was already 9 years ago.

All you "don't paint all the Muslims with the same brush" people listen up. If you are Muslim and believe that Mohhammed is the messenger of Allah (the one true god), then you must believe in the teachings of the Koran. Does the Koran state that it is the duty of all Muslims to convert nonbelievers to Islam? To give them a choice to convert or die? And that it is the right and duty of Muslims to kill Jews at every opportunity? One doesn't have to be a jihadist to believe what they are doing is right...one can quietly go to the mosque and quietly agree with the murder of Jews and infidels and never have to stand up at a rally and scream for the death of America....but PLEASE don't tell me that "its just a FEW muslims", unless, of course, by "a few", you mean HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, because anyone who watches international news and reads can easily see the streets in many countries are filled as far as the eye can see with sreaming Muslims cheering the latest bombibg/murders and chanting death to Israel, burning the American flag, carrying rocket launchers and rifles (thats normal, isn't it....lol) and generally threatening everyone who ISN"T a Muslim...who am I gonna believe? YOU or my lying eyes???

"They" don't have a "right to build" if "they" are not citizens. For this reason, the funding needs to be examined, though no crime has been committed.
