I think it is original, creative, and a way of bringing home his point. He did it to make waves because previous sessions on this topic got little response. Great marketing tool.
Our citizens are jobless, we're so far over our heads in debt, we can hardly even hope to get out, crime is rampant, we're fighting a war overseas, and THIS is what our government thinks is a wise use of it's time and resources? And half of you approve? We're in deep trouble.
I keep saying--- and just got proved right (again)...these low-life, self-serving, lying, pompous, egomaniacs (Senators and Representatives) will do and say ANYTHING to us to the what is, without a doubt, the easiest, cushiest, most gravy job there EVER was. How much in taxpayer dollars do you think were spent on the salaries of all the Senators and Representatives and their (unbelievably large) staff members? Plus all the electricity, papers, food, travel, etc? THIS is what we send them to do?? And THEY do this with no shame? Each and every one of them should resign and apologize to the American public. I kept waiting for the Chairman to gavel him quiet and lecture him on the seriousness of testifying before Congress... Thomas Jefferson would have slapped EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. He insulted them and they insulted us with this spectacle.
We have thousands of people sitting in prisons doing nothing but living off our dime. Put them out there to actually WORK to earn their keep. The farmers get a break in the amount they pay in labor and prices for food might come down.
I agree 100%. I'm tired of paying to keep prisoners in jail. Let them out, pay them nothing, and let them earn their room and board at prison. The roads need cleaning up, farmers need help, etc. Let them do something constructive to earn their way through prison.

Yes, it's a joke.
I'm not a fan of Colbert, but I'm glad someone finally called out Congress on their pointless hearings about common sense issues.
Is farm work hard? Yes.
Hilarious! Almost as good as when he roasted Bush!
also not a "fan" of colbert... but i loved it!
Testified in character.
How do you get to do that?
Just another example of the farce our political system is!
Although I'm a fan of Colbert, I couldn't believe this when I read about it this morning. Good job America. This is what we've become.
hahahaha
Isn't there a better way for Congress to spend their time?
Okay, tell me he's more of a joke than Al Gore, "The earth has a fever".
Awesome! He got my vote!
