Why aren’t the sprinklers working?
Absolutely poor showing from the volunteers, their Chief didn’t even respond until the 20 minute accountability. If not for all paid crews in town, the building would be on the ground.
Everyone knows the volunteers days are long gone, none live close enough to respond, and they don’t even turn out unless it’s a second alarm. When, not if, someone dies, things will change. The boys club is a disgrace.
As a career member, this is nothing new. The new Chief has promised to hold the volunteers accountable, ultimately running their entitled butts right across the bridge where they belong. Tic toc
A volunteer is a volunteer, end of conversation.
The problem with volunteering in a local fire company is that the county authorities have come up with so many regulations and requirements no volunteer has time for, plus you can't push any self respecting volunteer around, they will just go home and finish what they were doing before being interrupted.

10:16 Tell um cowboy! The downfall of the VFC was when a certain volunteer chief stood up on the floor and said those very words. He didn’t go to enough calls to qualify to run for office, and basically said nothing is expected from a volunteer anymore. I went Gold Badge and haven’t looked back. The volunteers don’t work for their money, they don’t touch a piece of equipment (other than to spend money to buy it) don’t train, and now don’t go to calls. Oh, and then they change the training requirements for ONE person, that same chief so he could run for office. TWICE!
I call BS the county, at least Wicomico and Worcester doesn’t have any oversight of the volunteer fire departments. The problem is this generation won’t do swat unless their paid to do it. I understand most volunteer departments actually pay some of their folks because otherwise they wouldn’t have anyone.
Considering this fire was in the middle of a storm with high winds, the career guys kicked butt! The OIC was a career Captain and the operation lead by a career lieutenant. That’s right, a real fire, mitigated quickly and safely without the slow and unqualified help of the volunteers. And on a Monday, checking all the equipment and putting back in service, I haven’t seen a volunteer. It’s a new day, just saying:)
12:52 I say just thank god you have a job where you can sit in your leather lazyboy 16 hours a day, and then retreat to your certa pillow top to sleep another 8. So big deal you had to go out in the rain and pull a single line for a exterior fire. The Volunteers will be here long after you retire and have to get another job because you lived way beyond your means. Sound familiar?
The problem with volunteering is you have to have it in your heart. Volunteers don’t have to have the same qualifications, physical fitness, or commitment of even the weakest of a career firefighter. If the citizens only knew just how pathetic we have become. First bad fire in Ocean City will be the last. It was said in a recent council meeting, we’ve only been lucky.
OCVFC hasn’t been the same for 20 years. When they dropped chief Stegar men headed elsewhere 4618 lives forever. Before all the rules and women invaded the fire house.
