Town Officials Question Berlin Fire Company’s New Station Plans

BERLIN – Town officials questioned the Berlin Fire Company’s plans to build a new station as funding needs at its primary location grow.

Following a budget presentation by David Fitzgerald, president of the Berlin Fire Company (BFC), town leaders said funding would be put to better use at the organization’s Main Street headquarters than on a new station outside town limits.

“I don’t understand why you want to build something two miles down the road and not take care of what you have,” Councilman Thom Gulyas said. “It just doesn’t make fiscal sense.”

Fitzgerald, joined by Fire Chief Jim Corron and EMS Chief Duane Phillips, outlined the fire company’s annual funding needs for town officials during Monday’s council meeting. Their presentation came after PKS & Company told the council the fire company had total net assets of $5.6 million and was a in a “very healthy” financial position.

Sound like up with Ocean City syndrome. Easy to do when you're spending tax money the City residents have to cough up so they can play fireman. Ha,Ha,Ha.

Because it is about spending as much money as they can, wastefully... Plus they see what SBY will do for SBY fire station, so they are giving it a try...

No one ever wants to fix, remodel or make bigger a fire station but always wants to build a new one... Juts like schools, they build a new school becasue the current one which has lets say 1000 students and can't hold any more, so they build a new school that can only hold 1200 students, so then they have to build yet another school... It is just to waste money, and say there is no money so they can raise taxes, becasue in the end it is all about making you a slave via taxes...

But those who fell into money, or steal their money from tax payers, always can't see this becasue currently they can afford said taxes, but one day they too will be in dire straights and will complain and wish they had not let it get that bad, but as usual it will have to get worse before people see this...

Just like how easy it is for you to lose your house, paid for in full or not, over a sewer or water bill you can't afford becasue the law says if there is a service in your area, you have to hook up to it, and you have to pay the hook up fee and all that jazz, and tell me, when can you ever remember sewer or water bills ever going down versus up??? I am 35 and I have never seen a water bill or sewer bill stay the same or go down... So you tell me, all who know it all...

Sounds like finally town officials standing up to the boys club. They can't staff what they have, let's just expand. Truth is,BFC. Couldn't care less about Berlin, they just want to expand territory as a power grab. This bunch pisses away money and then laughs about it. I like those 45,000 "volunteer incentives ", yep, it's all about who.

They cut EMS personal to find NEW fire equipment, why? One clearly serves the public, the other serves the FARMEN! They want new, shiny little red trucks, love to spec and travel to inspect them. Cover them in thousands of dollars on gold-leaf, for who? EMS calls are up, and although fire calls down, they want more.
