Don Clay Marcum, Jr. Obituary

Don Clay Marcum, Jr 77, of Salisbury MD and formerly of Poquoson and Newport News, VA, died on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born on September 25, 1939 in Middlesboro, KY, he was the son of the late Don Clay Marcum, Sr and the late June Saylor Marcum.

Don graduated from Durham High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Georgia Tech. He was an Aerospace Engineer at NASA starting his career in 1962 and was fortunate to serve at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA at the time the Mercury astronauts were receiving their training as the space race was just getting started. Don worked for NASA for 43 years, retiring in 2005. He held a patent for some of his work and he also published technical papers at NASA. He moved to Salisbury in 2006 in order to be close to his son and his family.

A prolific reader, the only thing he seemed to enjoy more, was his granddaughters. He always took an interest in their education and their many activities, especially swimming.

Mr. Marcum is survived by his son, Don Clay Marcum III "Clay" and his wife Melissa; two granddaughters, Ashley and Katelyn Marcum; his former wife, Patricia Marcum; and a host of friends and colleagues.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Rev. George Patterson will officiate. Interment will be on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA.
